Why Are My Tomato Leaves Curling? 8 Causes to Check

Tomato leaves may curl from ordinary growing stress, pests, herbicide injury or viruses. Use the affected leaves, other symptoms and recent conditions to narrow down what to investigate.

Tomato leaf curl is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can follow ordinary growing stress, such as heat or uneven watering, but pests, herbicide injury and viruses can also distort leaves. Start by checking which leaves are affected, what the curl looks like, and what has changed around the plant.

How to read the clues

Before changing how you care for the plant, compare four things: whether older leaves or new growth are affected; whether leaves roll upward or become twisted and narrow; whether there are other symptoms such as mottling, stunting or insects; and whether recent weather, watering, fertilizer, pruning or possible chemical exposure offers a clue. None of these signs alone confirms a cause.

Eight causes of tomato leaf curl

1. Physiological leaf roll

Older or lower leaves may roll upward or inward and feel thick or leathery while the rest of the plant looks healthy. This is often a response to growing stress, not proof of infection. Some varieties—particularly certain heirloom and indeterminate tomatoes—may show more visible rolling, according to NC Cooperative Extension.

2. Drought or inconsistent moisture

Too little water, or large swings between dry and wet soil, can stress a tomato and prompt leaves to roll. Check the soil and your watering pattern rather than diagnosing from leaf shape alone. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources recommends consistent, adequate watering.

3. Excess water or poor drainage

Waterlogged soil can also stress roots and contribute to curling. Feel the soil and check whether water drains away; do not respond to curled leaves by automatically watering more.

4. Heat stress

Hot weather can trigger upward rolling, and containers can heat up quickly in direct sun. Mid-summer curl may fit heat stress, but check for other symptoms and recent changes before settling on that explanation. University of Minnesota Extension discusses heat and other growing conditions that affect tomatoes.

5. Too much nitrogen or fertilizer

Excess nitrogen can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruit set and may be associated with leaf curl. Avoid adding fertilizer automatically; use an appropriate amount for your soil and growing conditions. University of Maryland Extension and NC Cooperative Extension identify fertilizer and nutrient conditions among possible contributors.

6. Heavy pruning or root disturbance

Recent heavy pruning, cultivation close to the plant, or other root damage can cause stress and curling. Consider what has happened to the plant in the days or weeks before the symptoms appeared.

7. Sap-feeding insects

Aphids and other sap-feeding insects can distort or curl leaves. Inspect the undersides of leaves, especially on young growth, for insects. Aphids may leave sticky honeydew. Beneficial predators may also be present, so identify what you see before deciding how to respond. See University of Maryland Extension’s tomato guidance.

8. Herbicide injury or viral disease

Twisted, cupped, strappy or unusually narrow new growth can point to herbicide injury. Consider whether nearby spraying could have drifted onto the plant, or whether compost, manure or yard clippings might have been contaminated. Viruses can also distort leaves; concern rises when curl occurs with mosaic mottling, stunting, unusually narrow leaves or fruit symptoms. Herbicide injury and viruses can look alike, so the full pattern and exposure history matter. UC ANR, University of Minnesota Extension and NC Cooperative Extension describe overlapping causes and symptoms.

Sort the symptoms before you act

What you notice What to investigate
Older or lower leaves roll upward; plant otherwise looks healthy Heat, watering, container temperature, fertilizer, pruning and root disturbance.
Insects or sticky residue under leaves Identify the pest; use guidance specific to that insect rather than assuming curl alone proves an infestation.
New growth is twisted or unusually narrow Possible herbicide exposure, including spray drift or contaminated compost, manure or yard clippings.
Mottling, stunting, unusually narrow growth or fruit symptoms accompany curl A virus is one possibility; seek local expert advice if the cause is unclear.

These are investigation clues, not a substitute for diagnosis. For symptoms that persist, worsen or remain ambiguous, contact a local extension office or plant diagnostic service.

What to check and do first

  1. Check the soil and watering pattern. Aim for consistent, adequate moisture and check drainage before changing your routine.
  2. Review recent conditions and care. Note heat, container exposure, fertilizer, pruning and any work near the roots.
  3. Inspect leaf undersides. Look for aphids or other pests, and note whether beneficial insects are present.
  4. Trace possible herbicide exposure. Consider nearby spray use and the sources of compost, manure or yard clippings.
  5. Get help when the pattern is unclear. Persistent, severe or ambiguous distortion warrants advice from a local extension office or plant diagnostic service.

UC ANR says virus-infected plants have no treatment and recommends removing and disposing of them. Apply that advice to suspected or diagnosed virus—not to every tomato with curled leaves.
