To cat-proof a Christmas tree, make it hard to tip, remove string-like decorations, secure ornaments beyond your cat’s reach, block access to live-tree water, and keep electrical cords inaccessible. These steps reduce risks, but no setup can guarantee a cat will leave the tree alone; supervise your cat and adjust the arrangement to its behavior.
Start with a stable tree and secure it against tipping
Choose a sturdy stand and set the tree on a level surface. A cat that climbs or leans on branches can pull even a well-decorated tree over. Cornell veterinary behavior resident Pamela Perry, DVM, says, “I’ve heard many stories about Christmas trees coming down,” in a Cornell article about unsecured trees and climbing cats.
If your cat climbs the tree or the tree can be shifted easily, anchor it to a suitable wall or ceiling point. Cornell describes using a cup hook with wire or string; ASPCA also recommends securing the tree tightly. An anchor kit can help, but confirm that its attachment method suits both the tree and the mounting surface. A stable base is essential whether or not you add a tether.
Remove decorations that can be swallowed
Do not use tinsel, stringy garlands, or loose ribbons where a cat can reach them. Cornell warns that swallowed tinsel can lodge in the intestines, with some cases requiring surgery. The FDA likewise warns that tinsel, string, and ribbon can cause serious stomach and intestinal damage. If your cat eats any of these materials, contact a veterinarian promptly.

Choose ornaments for where your cat can reach
Put fragile ornaments on high branches or leave them off the tree. Use non-breakable decorations on lower branches and secure them with cloth loops rather than hooks. Cats Protection advises placing hanging decorations higher and avoiding easily broken baubles.
Non-breakable does not mean safe to chew or swallow. Keep ornaments small enough to be a temptation out of reach, and remove anything your cat repeatedly bats at or mouths.

Keep cats away from live-tree water
Cover the stand or otherwise make its water inaccessible, taking care not to compromise the tree’s stability. Cornell recommends keeping cats away from water used to keep a live tree fresh and filling the stand with plain water, without chemical additives.
Manage lights, cords, and chewing
Route cords out of reach and, where practical, cover exposed sections with suitable electrical-cord tubing. Switch tree lights off at the mains when nobody is home. Supervise a cat that chews wires or persistently investigates the decorations; a cord cover is an aid, not a substitute for keeping the cat away from a hazard.

Adjust the setup to your tree and your cat
