Keeping a home clutter-free is less about buying storage or doing one dramatic clear-out than about making everyday decisions easier. Organizers recommend starting with a manageable area, giving belongings a clear place to return to, and building small habits that suit your household. These are practical suggestions, not a ranking or a promise that clutter will never return.

1. Decide what you want the space to do

Before sorting, picture the outcome you want and why it matters. Jan Arkwright, founder of Before & After Organizing by Jan, recommends clarifying the goal before beginning. A specific reason—such as making room to cook or keeping an entryway usable—can help guide difficult keep-or-release decisions.

2. Begin in a busy, manageable area

You do not have to take on the whole house at once. Start where a clearer space would make daily life easier: perhaps the kitchen, where streamlined storage can support meal preparation, or a home office where supplies and papers tend to collect. Choose a project small enough to finish in a reasonable session.

3. Start with belongings that are easier to sort

Choose one area at a time, and consider beginning with items that carry little emotional weight. Arkwright advises against making especially difficult possessions the first test of your effort. An easier starting point can help you get comfortable with the decisions before moving to more personal categories.

4. Take stock before deciding what to keep

Look at what you actually own, rather than organizing around an incomplete impression. In kitchens, check cabinets, pantry shelves and the refrigerator for expired food. Review the medicine cabinet too, but follow local guidance for disposing of medicines rather than putting them in household trash or drains by default.

In garage or utility areas, notice items that have gone unused for years. For clothing, consider fit, condition, comfort and whether you feel good wearing it. The point is to make choices based on how things serve you now, not to meet an arbitrary target for how much you should own.

5. Try a one-in, one-out guardrail

When you bring home something new, consider whether a similar item should leave. This can be useful for categories that tend to multiply, such as clothes, books, mugs or water bottles. It is a flexible guardrail, not a requirement to discard an identical item every time you buy something.

6. Handle quick put-away tasks promptly

If putting an item back, hanging up clothes or filing a paper takes less than two minutes, do it now when practical. Cara Palmer, founder of Organize Every Room, recommends this approach for small maintenance tasks. A short action can keep an item from becoming part of a larger pile later.

7. Give similar belongings a shared home

Group like items together and choose a designated place for each category. Utensils, cleaning supplies and tools are easier to find when they are kept with their kind. Seeing a category in one place can also reveal duplicates and make it easier to decide how much space it needs.

8. Sort by category when belongings are spread around

If supplies are scattered across several rooms, gather one type of item together before deciding what stays. Home organization expert Cara Palmer recommends category sorting because it shows the full volume at once. For a contained project, working room by room may feel more manageable; choose the approach that fits the location of the belongings and the size of the task.

9. Make a dated “maybe” box if you are unsure

For items you cannot decide about yet, put them in a box labeled with the date and store it somewhere accessible but out of the way. Arkwright suggests using six months as a possible review interval: if nothing has been retrieved by then, consider donating or discarding the contents. Treat that timing as an optional decision aid, not a deadline you have to follow. Keep the box out of damp or unsuitable conditions, especially if its contents could be damaged.

10. Keep memories without keeping every object

If the memory matters more than the physical item, consider photographing or scanning things such as children’s artwork, ticket stubs or Playbills. A digital record will not replace every meaningful object for every person, so use this selectively. You can also reserve a finite amount of space for keepsakes and decide which items matter most within it.

11. Use storage you already have before buying more

Before shopping for organizing supplies, check for bins, baskets, decorative boxes, dishes or jars that can serve the purpose. Carol Applebaum, founder of Luxury Pro Organizer, advises looking at what you already own first. Add a container only when it solves a specific problem, such as keeping a sorted category together; storage can support a system, but it cannot decide what belongs in it.

How to choose your first step

  • For the smallest effort: choose one busy surface or drawer and put away items that already have a home.
  • For a category that feels out of control: gather that type of item from across the house so you can see the true volume before sorting.
  • For an emotionally difficult area: begin with a neutral category instead, then return when you feel ready.
  • For clutter that keeps returning: focus on assigning homes and maintaining them with brief, repeatable put-away habits.

Organizing is an ongoing process, and the system needs to fit the people who live in the home. The National Association of Professional Organizers’ Greater Philadelphia Chapter notes that there is no single approach that works for everyone. For its guidance on working with an organizer, see the chapter’s FAQs.

When ordinary decluttering advice is not enough

If clutter is connected to hoarding disorder, lifestyle tips are not a substitute for care. The International OCD Foundation describes professional organizers as possible practical support for sorting, routines and systems, ideally coordinated with a client’s therapist. Its information for professional organizers distinguishes this support from treatment. Do not use a decluttering checklist to diagnose yourself or someone else.
