A humidifier adds moisture to indoor air and may ease discomfort from dry air, including a dry nose or throat, chapped lips, and dry skin. Use one only when the air needs added moisture: aim for 30โ50% relative humidity, monitor with a humidity gauge, and reduce or stop humidification if condensation or dampness appears. Too much moisture can encourage mold and dust mites.
When does a humidifier make sense?
Use a humidifier when indoor air is uncomfortably dry and added moisture helps relieve dryness. It is not a device to run automatically in every room or season. Measure humidity rather than guessing: the EPAโs indoor-air guide identifies 30โ50% as the preferred household range, and its humidifier guidance says not to humidify above 50% relative humidity.
Watch for condensation on windows, walls, or pictures, or for damp materials near the appliance. These are signs to lower its output, move it, or reduce use. Persistent dampness can support mold and dust mites. EPA indoor-air guide; EPA humidifier guidance.
Which type of humidifier should you choose?
The main practical differences are how each type makes moisture and what it may put into the air. Choose based on the room, the manufacturerโs maintenance requirements, how easily you can clean the unit, and whether compatible replacement wicks, filters, or cartridges are readily available. Noise, efficiency, capacity, and performance depend on the specific model; the general type alone does not establish those qualities.

Can you use tap water in an ultrasonic or impeller humidifier?
These types can send minerals from tap water into the air. The minerals may settle as scale inside the unit or appear as white dust nearby. Distilled water usually contains fewer minerals and can reduce this dispersal; the EPA also discusses deionized and reverse-osmosis water and compatible demineralization cartridges. Cartridge results vary, so follow the humidifier manual rather than assuming a cartridge will remove all minerals.

This water advice is especially relevant to ultrasonic and impeller units; it is not a blanket requirement that every humidifier use distilled water. See the EPAโs guidance on humidifier water.
How should you use and clean a portable humidifier?
- Check the manual. Follow the manufacturerโs directions for operation, cleaning products, and any replaceable parts.
- Empty and refill daily. The EPA advises emptying portable humidifiers, wiping surfaces dry, and refilling with fresh water each day.
- Clean every third day. EPA guidance recommends cleaning portable units every third day and removing scale or film. Use cleaners only as directed by the manufacturer, then thoroughly rinse the tank so no cleaning or disinfecting agent remains.
- Air-dry after cleaning. The CDC advises air-drying after cleaning and following the manufacturerโs instructions.
- Monitor the room. Use a humidity gauge; lower output or stop if humidity exceeds 50% or condensation and dampness develop.
The cleaning schedule is operational guidance, not a guarantee that a neglected or poorly maintained appliance is safe. EPA guidance was revised in June 2022; the CDCโs household guidance also emphasizes daily emptying, regular cleaning according to the manual, and air-drying.

What safety signs should you not ignore?
- Keep steam vaporizers away from children: steam and boiling water can cause burns.
- Reduce humidification if you see condensation or dampness, which signal that added moisture may be excessive.
- If respiratory symptoms seem associated with humidifier use, stop using the unit and contact a physician.
