Expandable hoses are easier to put away when their storage is close to the spigot, sized for the hose after use, and designed to let water drain. These 16 ideas range from a bucket or crate you can move to wall-mounted and built-in options; several are adaptations to plan, not tested construction projects. Check your hose’s drained coil size, the storage surface, and the route in and out before choosing one.

Plan the storage around your hose and site

Expandable-hose capacity is product-specific: a container’s stated capacity for a conventional hose does not establish how much expandable hose it will hold. Suncast lists its hose pot for up to 300 feet of expandable hose and separately for up to 50 feet of standard 5/8-inch vinyl hose, noting that actual capacity varies by hose type. Its Flex-Hose wall box is listed for up to 100 feet of expandable hose. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; check the current listing and your hose’s drained coil dimensions before buying or copying a design: Suncast 300 ft. Hose Pot and Suncast Flex-Hose Wall Mount Box.

  • Hose path: Decide where the hose enters, exits, and connects to the spigot. Avoid tight turns or edges that could snag it.
  • Water: Provide drainage so a coiled hose does not sit in a pool. Suncast’s pot has drainage holes and a bottom opening for a direct water-supply connection; that is a useful design reference, not proof that any household container is suitable outdoors.
  • Mounting: Match the attachment and its load rating to the wall or surface. An adhesive fastener intended for one material is not automatically suitable for another.
  • Access: Keep the tap, lid, crank, and hose opening reachable. Concealment is less useful if retrieving the hose becomes awkward.

Wall-mounted ideas

1. Wall-mounted metal bucket

Mount a metal bucket near the spigot and coil the drained hose inside. tesa documents a bucket-on-wall approach using a 4 mm hand drill and adhesive screws intended for brick and stone. Use those details only in their stated context; check the actual wall, attachment instructions, and loaded weight before mounting. The project is described at tesa’s Garden Hose Storage Buckets.

2. Painted plant-pot hideaway

Adapt the same wall-mounted bucket-or-pot idea with a pot color and finish that suits the patio. Before hanging it, check that the pot and its fixing can support the contents, that the hose can be removed without catching, and that water can escape.

3. A row of small wall pots

Arrange several small containers as a modular wall station—for example, one for a hose and others for watering accessories. Treat each container as a separate load: choose fixings for its contents and leave enough room to lift out the hose without snagging neighboring items.

4. Wall box above the spigot

A purpose-made wall box offers a useful reference for a compact enclosure. Suncast says its Flex-Hose box can fit over a spigot or mount on a wall and lists capacity for up to 100 feet of expandable hose. A homemade box should not be assumed to share that capacity; plan its size, opening, and water management around the specific hose.

5. Freestanding metal bucket

Gardening Know How describes drilling a side hole in a metal bucket and coiling a standard hose inside. For an expandable hose, treat this as an adaptation: check the drained coil size and route, and smooth or protect any cut edge so it cannot damage the hose. Keep the bucket stable and allow water to drain. See Gardening Know How’s hose-concealment ideas.

6. Half-barrel hideaway

A half-barrel gives the coil a rustic place to sit. Gardening Know How describes old barrel halves lined with plastic as hose storage; for an outdoor adaptation, use a stable vessel sized for the drained hose and plan a way for water to escape rather than leaving the coil in a wet liner.

7. Painted wooden crate

Paint a crate to coordinate with the deck and tuck the coiled hose beneath or inside it. Keep the opening clear for retrieval, and do not treat paint alone as proof that the wood is weatherproof. This adapts Gardening Know How’s crate-and-deck storage suggestion.

8. Surface-level lidded box

A lidded storage box can hide the coil on a patio or other hardscape where digging is unsuitable. Leave space for the hose to be lifted out, and avoid a sealed arrangement that traps rainwater. This is a surface-level adaptation of the buried-box idea described by Gardening Know How.

9. Buried box with only the lid visible

Gardening Know How describes burying a plastic storage box so its lid sits at ground level. This is a site-specific project, not a dig-and-drop solution: check for buried utilities before excavation, assess drainage and soil conditions, and make sure the box remains accessible and stable. If the location cannot drain reliably, choose a surface-level option instead.

Furniture-integrated storage

10. Bench with a hose compartment

An outdoor storage bench can conceal a hose while providing seating. Homes & Gardens reports expert guidance to route a hose through a low exit hole fitted with a rubber grommet. Treat any hole as a furniture modification: assess the material and structure first, protect the hose from abrasion, and keep the compartment ventilated and accessible. The editorial suggestions appear in Homes & Gardens’ guide to disguising a garden hose.

11. Deck-box hose bay

Reserve one end of a deck box—or a removable bin inside it—for the drained hose. Keep it separate from patio items that could block the hose or its route, and avoid a configuration that holds standing water.

12. Outdoor cabinet beside the spigot

An outdoor cabinet can hide the hose and keep it near the tap, reducing the visible run and repeated carrying. Check that the cabinet is appropriate for outdoor use and that the hose can be reached without moving heavy contents. Homes & Gardens names outdoor cabinetry as another concealment option.

13. Planter-style hose pot

An oversized decorative pot can make storage look like part of the garden. Plant expert Jessica Mercer told Homes & Gardens, “If you coil your hose inside of a hose hideaway like a lidded box or oversized planter from the outside, it’ll just look decorative.” Choose a pot large enough for the actual drained hose and plan drainage and the connection path. As a capacity reference, Suncast lists its hose pot for up to 300 feet of expandable hose, but says actual capacity varies by hose type; that figure applies to its product, not a DIY pot.

Plant-screened and tucked-away options

14. Plant-screened storage nook

Place a hose reel or container behind shrubs, with the opening and any crank still accessible. Gardening Know How recommends screening a reel without blocking its crank, while Homes & Gardens also describes concealing a hose behind plants. Keep the hose retrievable and avoid dragging it through or damaging the planting.

15. Vine-screened box

Position a hose box beside vining plants so growth can soften its appearance. Keep the lid, opening, and hose route clear as the plants grow; do not let foliage turn a quick-access box into a hidden obstacle.

16. Recessed window-well coil

Homes & Gardens reports that Andrew Bunting of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society discussed storing a hose in a shallow window well. This is appropriate only where the well’s reach, width, and depth suit the hose and access, and the window glazing is sturdy. Treat it as a site-specific possibility rather than a default recommendation.

Choose by installation constraint

Storage approach Placement and footprint Mounting or access trade-off Best planning check
Wall bucket, wall pot, or wall box Wall-mounted; keeps the coil off the ground Requires a suitable wall and attachment; container opening must remain reachable Confirm surface compatibility, load, hose fit, and drainage
Bucket, barrel, crate, or surface box Freestanding; can be repositioned No wall fixing, but takes up ground space Check stability, edge protection, access, and water escape
Bench, deck box, or cabinet Furniture-integrated; can serve another purpose Hose may be harder to retrieve if the compartment is crowded; modifications need material and structural assessment Keep a clear hose bay and a safe route through any opening
Buried box or window well Recessed and visually discreet Site-specific access and drainage; buried-box excavation adds utility-location concerns Assess the location before digging or relying on the recess
Plant-screened nook or vine-screened box Uses existing planting to soften or hide storage Growth can obstruct the lid, crank, or retrieval path Preserve access as plants fill out

For a fixed installation, verify the wall and mounting hardware before choosing a wall-mounted design. If you rent, use a freestanding container, surface-level box, or furniture storage rather than assuming a wall attachment is removable or suitable. Purpose-made alternatives also vary: GARDENA and Kärcher show wall-mounted, retractable, mobile, and hanger-style forms, which differ in mounting, mobility, reach, and hose compatibility. Compare those features rather than treating the formats as interchangeable: GARDENA and Kärcher.
