In WIRED’s blind comparison of 10 artificial Christmas trees, the Balsam Hill Vermont White Spruce took first place with 72 out of 75 points. The King of Christmas King Flock followed closely at 71. The scores offer a useful comparison of appearance and feel—but they reflect one editorial test, not a ranking of every tree or configuration on sale.
How the blind comparison worked
WIRED selected 10 popular trees from Balsam Hill, King of Christmas and National Tree Company. Ten volunteers assembled and fluffed them; three interior designers from Kansas City firm ML Designs then judged them without knowing the brands or prices. The trees were all 7.5 feet tall, displayed without ornaments under consistent studio lighting, and scored on realism, fullness and shape, branch structure, needle quality, and overall appeal. Each judge used a 1-to-5 scale, for a maximum combined score of 75.
That setup makes the results most useful for comparing how the tested trees looked and felt in the studio. It does not establish long-term durability, safety certification, environmental impact, or how other heights and lighting versions perform. Choose by the job the tree needs to do
For the most realistic, full-looking centerpiece
The Vermont White Spruce is the clearest choice from this comparison if appearance is the priority and its higher price is acceptable. Its top score came with praise for texture, fullness and branch shape, and it needed little fluffing. If easy takedown matters as much as setup, weigh that against the reported difficulty of disassembly.
For a snowy look
The King Flock scored one point behind the winner and is the standout flocked option in the test. Factor in some shedding, the described version’s lack of colored LEDs, and harder disassembly. Check the exact lighting configuration, since the finding should not be carried over automatically to a different version.

For sturdiness or ornaments
The Cypress Spruce was praised for sturdy structure, but its tested 7.5-foot form is heavy at 75 pounds. The Balsam Fir was WIRED’s sturdiest pick and had little shedding, although its needles drew criticism up close. For unusually heavy or fragile ornaments, the test does not give a weight limit; do not treat a judge’s impression of sturdy branches as a manufacturer rating.
For simpler setup and shaping
The Fraser Fir was the quickest to assemble in WIRED’s account and needed little initial fluffing, but some branch tips seemed weak for heavier ornaments. The Dunhill Fir’s flexible branches were easiest to shape, though it still required manual fluffing. “Quickest assembly” and “easiest to fluff” describe different tasks, so choose based on whether setup time or branch-by-branch shaping is the bigger concern.

Check size, shape, and configuration before buying
- Measure the ceiling clearance. WIRED recommends leaving about 6 to 12 inches between the tree’s top—including its topper—and the ceiling, and says a 7- or 7.5-foot tree usually suits an 8-foot ceiling. Treat this as guidance, not a formal standard.
- Match the profile to the room. WIRED describes full-profile trees as better suited to larger rooms, slim trees for tighter spaces, and pencil trees for narrow areas. Check both height and width against the floor space available.
- Confirm the exact variant. Brand, model, height and lighting configuration matter. A score for a 7.5-foot unlit tree does not establish how a pre-lit model, another height or a different lighting version will look or feel.
- Consider handling and storage. A tree’s weight affects carrying, repositioning and packing away. The 75-pound figure applies to the tested 7.5-foot Cypress Spruce as reported by WIRED; the comparison does not provide equivalent weight figures for the other trees.
- Think about ornaments and maintenance. Branch strength, shedding, fluffing effort and disassembly are separate considerations. The test offers judges’ impressions of these traits, not a durability rating across multiple seasons.
Keep the result in perspective
This is a useful shortlist, not a universal winner for every room or shopper. WIRED tested a selected set of 10 products at one height, without ornaments, and scored appearance and feel. It did not assess years of use, safety certification or environmental impact. Check current product details and availability directly, and do not assume a retailer’s current listing is identical to the tested configuration.
