To check whether an NRCS Conservation Practice Standard (CPS) applies to your property, identify the practice and the property’s location, then review the current state-adapted standard in the Field Office Technical Guide (FOTG) for the relevant field-office area. Compare the standard’s purpose, application conditions, and criteria with the site’s resource concerns and conditions. The national standard is a starting point—not a substitute for the local version or NRCS’s property-specific guidance.
What an NRCS Conservation Practice Standard tells you
A CPS describes a conservation practice’s purpose, where it applies, and the minimum technical criteria for carrying it out. It can help you determine whether a practice may address a resource concern on your land, but the standard alone does not establish that the practice is suitable for a particular site.
NRCS adapts national standards for state and local conditions, including soils, climate, topography, and regulations. Local criteria may be more restrictive. NRCS therefore directs users to the standard adopted and modified for the state where work will take place, rather than relying on the national version alone for planning, design, or installation. How to check the standard for your property
- Identify the practice. Start with the practice name or code, if you know it. NRCS’s national index lists practice names, codes, issue dates, and links to standards and supporting materials. Use it to find the relevant practice, not to assume that its national document is the locally applicable revision.
- Find the FOTG for the property’s field-office area. NRCS technical guides are localized to the geographic area served by a field office. Select the location precisely enough to reach the relevant guide; choosing a state alone may not identify the materials for the property. Use the Field Office Technical Guide (FOTG).
- Open Section 4 and locate the state-adapted CPS. Section 4 contains Practice Standards and supporting documents. Look for the current standard adopted for the area where the work is proposed. Do not treat a national standard as the controlling local document.
- Check the purpose and where the practice applies. Read the standard’s stated purpose and its application or “where it applies” information. Consider whether the resource concern on your property matches the concern the practice is intended to address, and whether the site conditions fit the stated conditions.
- Compare the criteria with local resource information. Review the standard’s minimum planning criteria and compare them with the property’s actual conditions. FOTG Section 2 provides natural and cultural resource information; Section 3 covers resource concerns and planning criteria; Section 4 contains the standards. Review relevant local information and any laws or regulations identified in the guide.
- Check supporting documents for context. A practice overview can explain the practice. A Conservation Practice Physical Effects (CPPE) document describes effects on resources and resource concerns. These materials can help with interpretation, but they do not replace the CPS.
- Confirm the revision date. Check the date on the local standard in FOTG. National standards have different issue dates and are periodically updated, so a national index entry does not by itself confirm which revision applies locally. For example, the national index lists Access Control (472) and Wildlife Habitat Management (645) with issue dates of 07/2026; those dates illustrate that revisions are practice-specific, not a universal date for all standards.
How to compare standards if more than one may fit

- Purpose: What resource concern is the practice intended to address?
- Application: Where, and under what conditions, does the standard say the practice applies?
- Criteria: What minimum planning criteria and specifications must be met?
- Local context: What resource information, planning criteria, laws, or regulations in the local FOTG affect the decision?
- Revision: What is the date of the current local document?
This comparison helps narrow the options, but without details about the property and proposed work it cannot determine which practice is technically appropriate.

Contact NRCS if you cannot find the state CPS in the local FOTG, cannot tell which local guide covers the property, or need help interpreting the standard against actual site conditions. NRCS advises that if no state conservation practice standard is available in FOTG, you should contact the appropriate State Office or your local USDA Service Center. For a property-specific technical determination, NRCS is the appropriate authority. Bring the practice name or code, the property location, the resource concern, and any relevant site information so staff can direct you to the right local standard and explain its application.
