To keep roadwork dust and mud out of your home, reduce the paths they can take indoors and ask the project team about controls at the work site. Close work-facing windows and exterior doors during visibly dusty activity, use damp methods to clean settled dust, and remove shoes or bulk mud at the entry. If dust or muddy deposits keep recurring, contact the project’s public information line or public works department and ask what controls and cleanup are in place.
Reduce dust entering the house
Close openings facing the work
During visibly dusty activity, shut windows and exterior doors on the side facing the roadwork. This can reduce direct entry, though it cannot prevent all dust from reaching the property. If you need to ventilate the home, choose a time when dusty work has stopped if practical.
Check how your HVAC system brings in air
Check whether the system draws outdoor air from the affected side of the house. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s guidance or ask an HVAC professional before changing ventilation settings. Do not block combustion-air openings or operate fuel-burning equipment contrary to its safety instructions.
The EPA’s indoor-air guidance for home remodeling discusses barriers, registers, and ventilation to contain pollutants during indoor work. Those instructions are not a road-construction protocol; applying the general idea of limiting entry from the work-facing side is a practical adaptation, not an EPA-prescribed roadwork measure.

Ask the project team about dust and track-out controls
Dust and mud controls are most effective when applied where soil is disturbed and vehicles leave the site. The EPA lists dust control, construction track-out controls, and vehicle washing as distinct construction best-management-practice categories in its construction BMP menu. A household cleanup routine can help inside your home, but it does not replace measures to limit dust at exposed soil or prevent vehicles carrying sediment onto public roads.
Contact the project information line or public works department and ask what the contractor is using to control dust, how site exits are managed, and how muddy deposits on nearby roads are cleaned. The EPA’s archived road and highway construction guidance describes general concepts such as limiting exposed work surfaces, sediment controls, washing vehicles as they leave, and coarse rock at temporary entrances. It is archived guidance, not a statement of current legal requirements for your location.

Why simply adding water is not always enough
The EPA identifies water as a common construction dust control and notes that stone can deter dust on construction roads and entrances. Its Dust Control BMP also warns that excessive water can run off the site or leave vehicles tracking mud onto public roads. Chemical soil stabilizers vary in suitability with site conditions and climate, and excessive application can pose health concerns. Ask the project team what is appropriate for that site; do not apply construction chemicals to public work or your property without qualified, site-specific advice.
Clean dust and mud that reach your home
Use damp cleaning for settled dust
Damp-wipe hard surfaces and wet-mop suitable floors rather than dry-sweeping settled dust, which can stir it back into the air. A HEPA vacuum is an optional tool if dust has entered the home, not a roadwork prevention measure. The EPA’s instructions for HEPA vacuuming, wet wiping, and wet mopping concern cleanup of lead dust from DIY renovation; they do not establish that ordinary roadwork dust contains lead or prescribe HEPA cleanup for it. See the EPA’s lead-dust cleanup guidance for that specific context.

Report a persistent problem through local channels
Dust-control requirements can vary by locality and site. The EPA’s guidance on managing stormwater and dust at demolition sites explains that rules may come from local, county, state, or some federal requirements, and that permits or contracts may specify controls. Although that page addresses demolition sites, the need to check applicable local requirements is relevant when asking about a nearby project; it does not establish a universal threshold for road-construction dust.
