How to Bring Natural Light Into a House With a Narrow Floor Plan

Bring daylight deeper into a narrow house with well-placed windows, high-level openings, roof lights or light wells, while balancing glare, privacy and thermal performance.

To bring daylight into the middle of a narrow house, plan how light will travel—not just how much glass to add. Use well-placed exterior windows and high-level openings, then consider roof lights or a light well where side light cannot reach. Glazed internal sections and reflective finishes can help spread that daylight, while shading and glazing choices control glare and unwanted heat.

Start by mapping where daylight can enter

Before choosing windows or roof products, note the orientation of the exterior walls and roof, nearby buildings and trees, and which rooms need daylight at what times. The sun’s path varies by location and season, and nearby obstructions can limit an opening’s usefulness. In U.S. guidance, east- and west-facing windows can be harder to control for heat and glare than north- or south-facing windows; the best solution still depends on the specific site and climate. YourHome’s orientation guidance explains how orientation affects daylight and thermal performance.

Improve daylight from the outside walls

Space windows to spread light

When a room has only one exterior wall, consider whether two appropriately spaced windows will distribute reflected light more evenly than one central opening. Their placement should account for the room layout, orientation, views, privacy, shading and thermal performance. A larger window is not automatically a better daylight solution.

Use high-level windows for deeper rooms

Clerestory and other high-level windows can carry daylight farther into a room than low windows and help bring daylight toward the core of the house. They need to be coordinated with the roofline and structure, and may need adjustable shading or appropriately sized eaves to manage direct sun. A YourHome guide to lighting also describes light shelves, which can reflect daylight farther into a room when the opening and shelf are well suited to the facade.

Bring light into the middle of the plan

Compare a light well, atrium or courtyard

A light well or atrium creates a route for daylight to descend into a deep plan. A courtyard brings daylight to an internal facade and can make otherwise internal rooms face an open space. These options can involve structural work, cost, privacy considerations and a loss of usable floor area, so they are more practical to weigh during a substantial renovation or new build. The New Zealand Ministry for the Environment’s passive solar design guidance discusses ways to introduce daylight into deeper parts of a home.

Choose between a skylight, roof window and tubular device

A skylight or roof window can admit daylight from above where side windows cannot reach. A tubular daylighting device uses a reflective tube to route roof light to a diffuser at ceiling level, making it an option where a direct roof-to-room opening is difficult. The right choice depends on roof access and construction, orientation, nearby shade, climate, desired light output and installation constraints.

YourHome says conventional skylights and roof windows are suitable for locations with frequent cloudy skies, while tubular devices suit typically sunny, clear-sky conditions; tubular devices admit considerably less light on cloudy days. Trees, buildings, roof aspect, season and haze also affect performance. A skylight or roof window can admit more than three times as much light as a vertical window of the same size, according to YourHome, but this is a comparative guidance figure—not a guarantee for a particular installation. YourHome’s skylights and roof windows guidance covers the options and site considerations.

Option Useful when Key considerations
Spaced exterior windows A room has one available outside wall Height, spacing, orientation, view, privacy, glare and heat
Clerestory or high-level window Side light needs to reach farther into a room Roofline, structure, shading, ventilation and thermal performance
Skylight or roof window A room has roof access but inadequate side light Cloudiness, roof aspect and construction, glazing, shading, ventilation and installation
Tubular daylighting device A compact roof-to-ceiling light path suits the room Sunny versus cloudy conditions, shaft route and length, roof fit and light output
Light well, atrium or courtyard A deep plan or major renovation can accommodate an open space Lost floor area, structure, privacy, daylight access and cost
Internal glazing, transoms or light shelves Existing daylight needs to pass between rooms or travel farther Privacy, sound, placement, reflectance and orientation

Carry existing daylight between rooms

Glazed sections in internal walls or transom panels above doors can let borrowed light pass from a daylit room into an interior space. Their usefulness depends on the layout, and they may not suit rooms where privacy or sound separation matters. Building rules vary: the Scottish Government’s 2022 domestic technical handbook includes jurisdiction-specific guidance on natural lighting. Its requirements should not be treated as rules for other locations.

Distribute light and control glare and heat

Light-coloured walls and ceilings reflect more of the daylight that reaches a room, but finishes cannot create daylight where no useful source exists. Light shelves can bounce incoming light deeper into a room; their effectiveness depends on placement, geometry and facade orientation. Avoid directing strong sun onto task surfaces where glare is likely.

More glazing can also bring unwanted heat gain or heat loss. Coordinate window and roof-light size and position with room use, local climate, glazing properties and appropriate shading. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Science Education guidance discusses daylighting alongside glare and energy considerations. UK design guidance also addresses daylight and design at the dwelling scale: National Model Design Code: part 2.

Use rules of thumb as starting points, not specifications

YourHome gives early design rules of thumb for skylights: a skylight area of 3–5% of floor area, or 1–2% for high-performing tubular skylights; spacing skylights about 1.5 times the floor-to-roof height for more even distribution. These figures are not a substitute for checking a specific home’s daylight, roof, climate and local requirements.

Plan roof openings and structural changes carefully

Adding a skylight or roof window to an existing house is a building project, not simply a product choice. YourHome says retrofits require a qualified builder or contractor. Structural feasibility, roof construction, weatherproofing and local building regulations should be assessed for the property. Guidance from another country does not establish the rules that apply at your address.
