How to Check Whether a Bridge or Road Closure Affects Your Route Before You Travel

Use the official 511 or DOT service for every jurisdiction on your trip. Trace your route, inspect closure details, check critical bridges separately, and recheck before leaving.

To find out whether a road or bridge closure affects your trip, check the official 511 or transportation-agency map for every jurisdiction on your route. Trace the roads you plan to use, open nearby closure and construction alerts to check their direction and limits, and verify any important bridge restriction separately. Recheck close to departure: conditions can change, and no single map is established here as covering every road or jurisdiction.

Check your full route on the responsible agency’s map

Start with the state, provincial, or regional transportation authority responsible for each part of the trip. Its 511 service or Department of Transportation (DOT) website is the primary place to check agency-reported closures and restrictions. A route that crosses a border may require checking more than one service; North Carolina’s DOT, for example, directs travelers to neighboring states’ 511 systems as well as its own DriveNC.gov.

  1. List the jurisdictions and main roads. Note the regions and route numbers or road names the planned trip will use.
  2. Open each relevant official 511 or DOT map. If the trip crosses jurisdictions, check the agency responsible for each segment rather than assuming one map shows the whole route.
  3. Trace the actual roads. Enter the route if the service supports directions, or follow the planned roads on its map. Some services offer route guidance or notifications, but features vary.
  4. Show relevant map layers. Look for current closures, incidents, construction or roadwork, future work or closures, and weather. Use the map legend: symbols and available layers differ by service.
  5. Open each alert that could intersect the trip. Read the road, direction, affected lanes or location limits, timing, detour, and any reopening estimate if provided. A marker near your route does not by itself establish that the route is blocked.

Map details are not uniform: an agency may not publish every field for every alert. Compare the alert’s road, direction, and endpoints with your planned route instead of relying on its proximity to the route line.

Check bridge restrictions separately

A bridge clearance map and a current closure list answer different questions. If a bridge is essential to your route, verify the correct bridge and direction, then check the agency’s current restrictions and closure notices as well as any relevant height or load limits.

Indiana DOT (INDOT), for example, directs travelers to its Road Restrictions & Closures information for recent bridge restrictions. Its bridge clearance map provides bridge details including location, direction, and minimum clearance; clearance can differ by direction. INDOT says that map covers interstates, U.S. highways, and state routes. For city streets or county roads in Indiana, it directs users to obtain approval from the municipality. Other jurisdictions may define bridge-map coverage differently.

Choose the right way to check

Option Best for Strength Limitation
Official DOT or 511 map Agency-reported closures, incidents, construction, and route alerts Shows information from the agency responsible for that jurisdiction; map markers may include alert details. Coverage, layers, and features vary by jurisdiction and road class.
Official 511 phone service Voice information when a screen is inconvenient or unsafe Some services report information by route, road, or bridge. Bay Area 511, for example, describes route- or bridge-specific information through its phone service. Menus, hours, coverage, and available details vary by service.
Navigation app with crowdsourced reports Additional incident awareness and route guidance Can add reports from app users. Alaska 511 displays Waze-reported incidents and closures alongside Alaska DOT information. User reports are not the same as an agency closure notice; confirm consequential restrictions with the responsible authority.
Bridge restriction or clearance map Bridge-specific access, height, or load concerns May provide bridge, direction, and clearance details. May cover only specified roads and may not serve as a current closure list; local roads can fall outside a state map’s scope.

Set alerts and recheck near departure

If the agency offers saved-route notifications, consider enabling them for relevant events and road conditions. Alaska 511, for example, offers route notifications, but availability and default settings are specific to that service and can change. Check the settings in the system you use rather than assuming an alert is active.

Review the official source again shortly before leaving, especially if the trip depends on a bridge, a long detour would be disruptive, or emergency conditions are possible. North Carolina DOT directs travelers to DriveNC.gov overnight and during emergencies, and says its 511 line carries urgent messages about major interstate closures. Services do not have one established universal update interval, so do not treat an earlier check as a guarantee that conditions will remain the same.

Check safely if you are already on the road

Make route checks before setting out whenever possible. Bay Area 511 advises: “Please check traffic conditions before you leave, call 511 for voice-activated travel information, or pull over to check your smartphone for updates.” Use a voice service where available, or stop somewhere safe before looking at a phone; do not handle a screen while driving.
