Truss Bridge vs. Beam Bridge: Which Suits a Mountain Highway?

Neither a truss nor a beam bridge is inherently best for a mountain highway. The crossing’s geometry, supports, foundations, hazards, access, and lifecycle needs determine which design is viable.

Neither a truss bridge nor a beam bridge is automatically the better choice for a mountain highway. The right design depends on the crossing’s span, road alignment and clearances, where supports can be built, ground conditions, water and scour hazards, construction access, and long-term inspection and maintenance. Without those site details, there is no defensible universal winner.

What distinguishes a truss bridge from a beam bridge?

A truss bridge carries loads through a framework of connected members arranged in triangular units. A beam or girder bridge uses longitudinal beams or girders to support the deck and transfer loads to the supports. These are broad descriptions; the terms alone do not determine which design will work better at a particular site.

Why mountainous terrain does not decide the answer

Mountain sites can make access, support placement, foundations, alignment, and construction sequencing challenging. But “mountain highway” does not specify whether a crossing is short or long, whether piers can be placed in the terrain, or whether the road approaches are straight, curved, or steep. Terrain matters through its effects on the design and construction choices, not as an automatic reason to choose a truss or a beam.

The Federal Highway Administration’s bridge-design workflow treats bridge type and span arrangement as project-specific choices made after establishing geometry and considering the site. Its superstructure reference manual also identifies span needs, clearances, geometry, and topography as factors that affect bridge type and proportions: FHWA, LRFD for Highway Bridge Superstructures Reference Manual.

What site conditions determine the choice?

Decision factor Questions to resolve Why it matters
Span and support locations What clear span is required? Where can abutments or piers safely and practically be built? Span lengths and substructure locations shape the feasible bridge arrangement. A deep valley or steep slope may limit support locations, but dimensions and site investigations are needed to judge the effect.
Road alignment and clearance Is the road curved, skewed, or steeply graded? What roadway and vertical clearances apply? Geometry and clearance requirements affect superstructure type, proportions, and layout.
Ground and foundations What do geotechnical investigations show about bearing, settlement, sliding, overturning, and lateral resistance? Foundation capacity and constructability can rule out support arrangements or change their cost. FHWA’s design workflow calls for geotechnical recommendations for each substructure.
Water and natural hazards Does the crossing involve a river, flood, debris flow, unstable stream, or scour risk? Hydraulic opening, stream stability, scour, sediment transport, and deck drainage need evaluation where relevant. FHWA’s 2024 second edition of Highway Design of Safe Bridges covers these topics: FHWA, Highway Design of Safe Bridges, Second Edition.
Construction access and sequence Can materials and equipment reach the site? Where can they be staged, and how can components be erected? Access, equipment reach, temporary works, erection sequence, and traffic disruption affect buildability. The answer depends on a project-specific construction plan.
Inspection, maintenance, and cost How will critical areas be inspected and maintained? What are the initial and whole-life costs under stated assumptions? Compare access for inspection, durability, fatigue-sensitive details, maintenance needs, and lifecycle costs using project quantities and estimates—not a generic rule of thumb.

How to make a defensible comparison

  1. Define the crossing. Establish the road’s horizontal and vertical alignment, required clear span, roadway and vertical clearances, and any other site constraints.
  2. Identify viable support layouts. Determine where abutments and piers could be placed, then assess the terrain, access, and foundation conditions at those locations.
  3. Assess water-related requirements. For a waterway or flood-prone site, evaluate hydraulic opening, scour, stream stability, sediment, and drainage.
  4. Develop buildable alternatives. Compare how each feasible bridge arrangement can be delivered, staged, erected, and maintained at the actual site.
  5. Compare total project implications. Use project-specific engineering, cost estimates, maintenance assumptions, and the current specifications and local requirements that govern the project.

FHWA’s Steel Bridge Design Handbook covers bridge-design topics including constructability and fatigue. Its overview was published in March 2013 and describes the handbook as supporting AASHTO LRFD specifications; project teams should verify the current specifications and requirements applicable to their work.

What the available examples do—and do not—show

FHWA’s Geotech FAQ notes that geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) abutments have been built in mountainous terrain at stream velocities up to 10 feet per second, with designs accounting for potential scour: FHWA, Geotech FAQ. That is an example of a particular abutment approach, not a general safe-velocity limit and not evidence that a truss or beam is preferable.

The available FHWA guidance supports a site-specific selection process, but it does not establish a general cost, span, or performance winner between truss and beam bridges for mountain highways. Any recommendation needs the measurements, investigations, and engineering analysis for the actual crossing.
