When a river crossing is unavailable, use the option the local authority has established: an operating ferry, an authorized temporary crossing or shuttle, or a marked detour to another bridge. Check the current closure notice before leaving; service hours, eligible travelers, access rules and river conditions can change, and a route open to drivers may not be open to pedestrians or cyclists.
Start with the closure notice, not a map estimate
The agency or operator responsible for the crossing determines which alternatives are available. Look for the closure’s start and end dates, the authorized route, access restrictions, and any separate information for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists or boats. If the notice is unclear or circumstances may have changed, confirm details with the responsible agency before setting out.
A ferry, temporary bridge and road detour are not interchangeable options at every site. A temporary route may be restricted to certain users, and a ferry may stop operating or have limited hours. Follow posted directions rather than assuming a familiar route remains open.
When a ferry is available
A ferry can preserve a vehicle crossing while a bridge is closed, but it is a local service with its own schedule and operating limits. Check whether it is running, who may use it, and whether vehicle or load restrictions apply. Weather, river conditions, commercial traffic, crew changes, refueling and maintenance can interrupt service.

For the Lansing crossing, Iowa DOT says a typical car-ferry trip takes about 15 minutes including loading and unloading. That is a figure for this service, not a general ferry estimate or necessarily the total time for a journey: access, waiting and boarding can add time. Iowa DOT’s Lansing Car Ferry service page provides current local information.
Bridge work can affect ferry operations too. In June 2026, Iowa DOT and WisDOT announced closure of ferry service and river traffic for installation of the center span of the Iowa 9/Wisconsin 82 bridge. A ferry that usually serves as an alternative may therefore be unavailable during nearby construction. Check the latest agency notices, including Iowa DOT’s June 9, 2026 update and WisDOT’s June 5, 2026 notice.

When a temporary bridge, bypass or shuttle is provided
A temporary crossing can maintain access during repairs or replacement, but its location, opening period and permitted users depend on the project. Check how to reach it, whether it is open to the public, and whether a shuttle runs on a schedule. Do not assume that a facility used by construction crews or emergency responders is a public route.
Temporary vehicle bridge
After flood damage to the Baring Bridge, King County reported that a temporary traffic bridge opened on August 6, 2026, after roughly four months of construction. The timing and arrangement apply to that project, not to temporary bridges generally. See the county’s Baring Bridge Replacement Project page for its status and access information.

Pedestrian bypass and shuttle
For bridge deck replacements in Knoydart, Highland Council described a temporary pedestrian bypass and shuttle arrangements in its July 23, 2026 update. Such provisions can help people without a vehicle, but schedules and access are project-specific. Consult the Highland Council project updates for current arrangements.
Emergency or contractor access
During emergency work on the Hoh River Bridge, Washington State DOT said contractor-provided access through the work zone was for emergency responders, not the public. An apparent path or temporary structure is not permission to use it. Follow the project’s public access instructions instead; WSDOT’s Hoh River Bridge Emergency Repair page describes that project.

When the route is a road detour
A marked detour may send travelers to another bridge, sometimes a substantial distance away. During the Lansing ferry interruption, Iowa and Wisconsin transportation agencies identified routes to other Mississippi River bridges. For the Hoh River Bridge closure, WSDOT warned of detours lasting hours. These are examples of local conditions, not estimates for other crossings.
Use the route named in the current notice and allow for the full trip to the alternate bridge. A map’s straight-line distance or usual crossing time will not capture detour roads, queues or changing traffic controls. For a project-specific example of the scale of traffic involved, WSDOT reported about 1,400 vehicles daily on the Hoh River Bridge in 2026; that is a site figure, not a general bridge-traffic benchmark.

Check access by travel mode
Do not assume every alternative serves every traveler. Agencies may give separate directions for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and boaters. For example, Transport for NSW’s May 2020 Berowra Waters Ferry Upgrade update discussed road-user detours separately from pedestrian and cyclist access. During bridge installation, river navigation may also be restricted, as the Iowa DOT and WisDOT notices for the Mississippi River span work illustrate.
Boaters should check current navigation restrictions and river conditions, not rely only on road closure information. The Environment Agency’s River Thames restrictions and closures page, updated September 29, 2026, advises checking current conditions. The Transport for NSW project update is available at Berowra Waters Ferry Upgrade.
Compare the options that actually exist
There is no universal rule for which alternative is fastest or cheapest. Compare the local options using the conditions in the closure notice and service information.
Quick Recap
- Who can cross: Confirm whether the route serves vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, emergency responders or boats, and check any accessibility or vehicle restrictions.
- Availability: Check ferry hours, shuttle schedules, booking or queueing requirements, closure dates and possible weather or river-related interruptions.
- End-to-end time: Include access to the crossing, ferry waiting and loading, or the complete road route to another bridge. A stated crossing time is not necessarily total journey time.
- Temporary-route details: Verify where the route begins, when it is open, who is allowed to use it and whether a shuttle or other connection is required.
- Current conditions: Recheck official notices before departure, especially when weather, river levels, construction or an incident could change access.
