Many common construction and demolition (C&D) materials can be reused or recycled, including concrete, asphalt, metals, clean wood, drywall, and some masonry and site-clearing debris. The practical answer depends on whether a local outlet accepts the material in its condition. Plan to reduce waste first, salvage usable components, and sort the remainder into clean streams for recycling.
What construction and demolition materials can be recycled?
Potential routes depend on processing and local markets. A material sent to a new use is not necessarily recycled into the same product: for example, crushed concrete may become road base, while suitable wood may be processed into mulch or fuel.

EPA’s U.S. estimate is that 600 million tons of C&D debris were generated in 2018—more than twice the amount of municipal solid waste generated that year. That is a dated national estimate covering a defined set of materials, not a current-year or global total. See the EPA material-specific data.
How to arrange recycling for a project
1. Plan for reuse before demolition
Estimate the main material streams and identify salvage, donation, or reuse options before work begins. When practical, preserve existing structures or use careful removal and deconstruction to recover doors, fixtures, lumber, and other components. Designing for adaptability and disassembly can also make future reuse easier. EPA’s best practices for reducing, reusing, and recycling C&D materials put prevention and reuse ahead of recycling.

2. Confirm outlets and requirements locally
Contact your municipal or regional waste authority, C&D recyclers, salvage organizations, and material processors. Before hauling, ask what they accept, contamination limits, size and preparation requirements, hours, delivery or pickup arrangements, and fees. Ask recyclers about applicable state and local compliance and whether licensing, registration, or third-party certification applies. EPA’s sustainable C&D materials guidance recommends checking outlets and their credentials; acceptance rules and markets vary by locality.
3. Separate clean material streams
Set up clearly identified piles or containers for clean concrete and masonry, asphalt, metals, wood, drywall, and reusable components according to the outlets’ requirements. Segregating material at the work site can help prevent contamination. Signs or labels can help crews keep streams distinct, but they do not establish that a receiving facility will accept the contents.

4. Keep hazardous or contaminated debris out of ordinary recycling
Do not mix hazardous waste or material contaminated with chemical, biological, or radiological agents into ordinary recyclable loads. Lead- and asbestos-containing building materials are regulated; suspected materials call for guidance from qualified local professionals and environmental authorities, not an ordinary recycling procedure. EPA’s planning considerations for materials and wastes discuss sorting and contamination concerns, including disaster debris. A C&D landfill accepting a material does not mean that material was recycled.
5. Keep destination records when the project requires them
If a contract or diversion requirement calls for reporting, retain facility receipts or weight tickets and record the material streams and destinations. Documentation duties depend on the contract and jurisdiction, so confirm them with the project owner or relevant authority.

How to choose between available outlets
When more than one outlet is possible, compare the actual route—not just whether a facility calls itself a recycler. Check:
- Which materials it accepts and its contamination thresholds.
- Preparation, sorting, and size requirements.
- Distance, pickup or delivery logistics, and fees.
- Whether the material will be reused, processed into a product, used as aggregate or fuel, or disposed of.
- Applicable licensing, registration, or other credentials.
For an individual renovation, the most useful first contact is usually the local waste authority or a nearby C&D processor: ask about the exact material and condition you have, then confirm the destination before loading or hauling it.
