For a more secure, dependable home network, set Wi-Fi to WPA3 Personal when your devices support it, or WPA2 Personal if they do not. Change the router administrator password and Wi-Fi password, update its firmware, keep its firewall on, and disable internet-facing remote management, WPS, and UPnP unless you need them. For reliability, start with automatic channel selection, use a 20 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz, and test coverage where your household devices actually operate.
Which router settings should I change first?
Router menus differ by manufacturer, internet provider, and firmware version, so there is no universal menu path. Sign in using the router maker’s or provider’s instructions, then look for sections such as Wireless, Wi-Fi, Security, Administration, or Advanced. Change one setting at a time and note the original value so you can undo a change if a device stops working.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi security | WPA3 Personal if supported by the router and devices; otherwise WPA2 Personal | Encrypts wireless traffic. Avoid open Wi-Fi, WEP, and legacy WPA. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance recommends WPA3 or WPA2 Personal. |
| Administrator credentials | Replace the default administrator password with a unique one | Protects access to router settings; it is separate from the Wi-Fi password. |
| Wi-Fi password and network name | Use a unique Wi-Fi password and a network name that does not identify you, your location, or router model | Controls access to the wireless network. Hiding the network name is not a substitute for encryption. |
| Firmware | Enable automatic updates if available; otherwise follow the manufacturer’s or ISP’s update process | Updates can include security fixes and stability improvements. Support and update methods vary by router. |
| Firewall | On | Adds a layer of protection between the home network and outside traffic. |
| Remote management, WPS, and UPnP | Off unless a household need requires them | These convenience features can create additional ways to access or change network devices. Their effects depend on the router and applications in use. |
| Guest network | Use a separate guest login for visitors; enable isolation from the main network if the router offers it | Visitors do not need the main Wi-Fi password. Isolation behavior varies by model, so do not assume every guest network blocks access to local devices. |
How do I secure home Wi-Fi without breaking connected devices?
Use WPA3 or WPA2 Personal
Choose WPA3 Personal when both router and household clients support it. WPA2 Personal is a reasonable fallback for devices that cannot join WPA3. Avoid WEP and legacy WPA. If an updated router still cannot offer WPA2 or WPA3, the FTC advises considering replacement. Keep in mind that switching security modes can disconnect older smart-home devices; check the devices’ compatibility and reconnect them using the new settings.
Change the two passwords independently
The administrator password controls router configuration, while the Wi-Fi password controls network access. Change both defaults, and do not reuse a password from another account. A network name should not disclose personal details or make the router model obvious. A hidden SSID does not secure access: Apple notes that concealing the network name is not a security measure in its recommended router settings.

Reduce unnecessary access paths
Turn off remote management from the internet unless you have a specific need to manage the router away from home. Disable WPS and UPnP when they are not required; some applications or devices may rely on UPnP, so check for a real dependency before leaving it off. Keep the built-in firewall enabled. Router labels and options vary, so consult the device maker or ISP before changing unfamiliar advanced controls.
Separate visitors from household devices
A guest network lets visitors use a separate password instead of sharing the primary one. It can also reduce exposure of the main network if a visitor’s device is compromised, as the FTC explains. If your router has a setting to prevent guest devices from reaching local devices, enable it when appropriate; guest network isolation is vendor-specific, not guaranteed by the label alone.

Keep the router updated and supported
Turn on automatic firmware updates where offered. Otherwise use the manufacturer’s or ISP’s documented update procedure and check periodically for updates. A router that no longer receives security updates deserves attention even if it still works. The FTC’s replacement threshold is especially clear when updating still leaves a router without WPA2 or WPA3. NIST’s 2024 consumer-router publication provides broader security context, but it is not a consumer checklist for particular menu settings.
Which Wi-Fi band and channel should I use?
Keep supported bands and radio modes enabled as a starting point; older devices can use modes they support while newer ones can use newer capabilities. Bands trade off range, speed, congestion, and compatibility, so no single band is best throughout every home.

| Band | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Devices farther from the router, broad compatibility, and some connected-home equipment | Usually reaches farther and passes obstacles better, but has fewer non-overlapping channels and more interference from nearby Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices. |
| 5 GHz | Higher throughput for devices closer to the router | Often faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz, but has shorter range and some IoT devices do not support it. |
| 6 GHz | High-performance connections near the router when both router and client support it | Requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment and has shorter reach. |
Start with automatic channel selection
Use Auto as the initial channel setting where available. Apple recommends automatic selection; Microsoft notes that automatic choices work well on some access points but not all. If performance remains poor, inspect nearby access points and signal strength before selecting a channel manually. Microsoft’s consumer guidance identifies channels 1, 6, or 11 as 2.4 GHz options; which is preferable depends on local congestion and available choices. Channel availability and rules vary by country, so use the options presented by your router.
Keep 2.4 GHz channel width at 20 MHz
A 20 MHz width on 2.4 GHz is a stability-oriented starting point. Apple recommends it to reduce performance and reliability problems around nearby Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices. Wider channels may increase throughput, but can be more vulnerable to interference and less compatible with older adapters. On 5 GHz and 6 GHz, leave channel width on Auto or the router’s supported default unless diagnosing a specific issue; Apple recommends Auto or supported widths for those bands.

Decide whether bands share a network name
A single network name across bands can let the router steer compatible devices between them. Apple warns that using different names for each band can reduce reliability for Apple devices, while Microsoft explains that separate names can help users identify which band a device is using. Keep one name if device behavior is good; split names only to troubleshoot or support a device that needs a particular band.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does Wi-Fi keep disconnecting or slow down in some rooms?
First distinguish weak coverage from interference or a network configuration problem. A channel change cannot fix a signal that is too weak to reach a room. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home layout guidance recommends recording a baseline in different locations before adjusting the network.

- Measure where it matters. Check connection quality or run the same speed test near the router and in rooms where devices are used. Record the location and result before changing settings.
- Improve placement. Put the router centrally and elevated where practical. Walls, corners, desks, metal objects, and device orientation can affect signal. In a home with dense or obstructive construction, test actual rooms rather than assuming the router’s nearby performance reflects coverage throughout.
- Check congestion and channel width. If signal is strong but reliability is poor, inspect nearby networks, try another suitable channel if Auto is performing badly, and use 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz.
- Check device compatibility. If only one older smart device disconnects, confirm that it supports the selected security mode and band before changing network-wide settings.
- Check DHCP and NAT topology. If devices intermittently lose access or receive address conflicts, identify whether the ISP gateway and a separate router are both acting as routers. Apple recommends one DHCP server on the network and NAT on only one device; duplicate DHCP servers can cause conflicts, while multiple NAT layers can create double NAT and disrupt some network resources. Confirm the roles of the devices with the ISP or their documentation before changing them.
Keep WMM enabled
Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) should generally remain enabled. Apple says disabling it on supported routers can affect performance and reliability; turning it off is not a general-purpose fix for a slow connection.
When should I replace a router?
Do not replace a working router just to chase a theoretical performance improvement. First apply supported updates and check whether it can provide WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal. Consider a supported replacement if it cannot provide either after updating or no longer receives security updates. For a larger or obstructed home, coverage may call for an additional access point or mesh system, but the right arrangement depends on layout; confirm that any new setup will not create duplicate DHCP service or double NAT alongside the ISP gateway.
Quick Recap
- Confirm WPA2/WPA3 support and ongoing firmware support.
- Check that existing connected-home devices work with its security modes and bands.
- Match coverage capability to the home’s layout and obstructions.
- Make sure update, firewall, guest network, and remote-management controls are understandable and available.
- Verify compatibility with the ISP gateway and network topology.
