Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart by placing your main router in the most central, open, elevated spot the modem cable allows. Check Wi-Fi where you actually use it. If weak areas remain, add compatible mesh points partway between the router and those areas—where each point can still maintain a strong connection upstream—then test and adjust.
Plan around the rooms and devices that matter
There is no universal router location or coverage radius. House size and layout, floors, construction materials, neighboring networks, equipment, and modem location all affect the result. Manufacturer coverage estimates apply to particular products and assumptions; they are not guarantees for an individual home. Google notes that placement depends on home size, construction, usage, and layout, and calls it “an inexact science” (Google Home and Nest Help: Where to place your Wifi devices).
- List the rooms where people regularly stream, work, call, or browse, plus fixed smart-home devices that need a connection.
- Mark floors and known weak spots, as well as the modem, available power outlets, and practical Ethernet routes.
- Check the connection from the places devices are normally used, not only beside the router.
Improve the main router’s position first
When the modem cable permits, put the router near the center of the area you want to cover. Keep it elevated and in the open rather than on the floor or behind dense furniture, inside a cabinet, or among other obstructions. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recommends central placement; Google likewise advises avoiding obstructions (FCC: Consumer Connectivity Tips; Google placement guidance).
Retest in the priority rooms after moving the router. If the existing network now works reliably where you need it, further equipment may not be necessary. If it does not, consider whether the problem is local to a distant room or whether internet service is slow even near the router.

Choose the right fix for the remaining gap
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Reposition the existing router | Coverage is mostly adequate, but the router is low, hidden, or at one edge of the home. | Modem cabling may limit placement. Compare coverage before and after the move. |
| Add a compatible mesh point or system | One or more rooms remain weak after practical router repositioning, or coverage must span floors or a long layout. | Points need a strong connection to one another. Confirm compatibility and test placement. |
| Use a range extender | A limited area needs a comparatively simple extension. | The FCC lists extenders as an option, but the cited guidance does not compare specific designs or performance. Evaluate the particular product and test the result. |
| Connect a stationary device by Ethernet | A fixed device needs a dependable high-speed link and can be wired. | A cable route is required. Ethernet to that device does not extend wireless service to mobile devices. |
Compare options by coverage in priority rooms, construction and floors, equipment compatibility, available wired ports and cable routes, client-device capabilities, and whether the bottleneck is Wi-Fi or the internet connection. The FCC describes mesh systems, extenders, and Ethernet as distinct options (FCC consumer guidance).
Place mesh points where they can relay a strong signal
A mesh point should not sit at the edge of a dead zone: it needs a usable connection to the main router or another upstream point in order to relay service. Put it partway between that working point and the weak area, reasonably close to its upstream neighbor, elevated and away from dense obstructions. Google’s placement guidance recommends checking and adjusting placement rather than assuming one arrangement will work in every home (Google Home and Nest Help).

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Follow the mesh system’s compatibility rules before adding hardware. Products that look similar or share a brand may not work together. For example, Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in a mesh network with earlier Nest Wifi or Google Wifi products; check the current specifications for the exact models you own or plan to use (Google: Tech specs for Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, and Google Wifi).
Test the mesh connection and real-world coverage
- Use the system’s app to run its mesh or point-connection test, if available. Google provides a mesh test for assessing network performance (Google Home and Nest Help: Mesh test guide).
- Check the rooms and devices that matter in normal use; an app’s result does not replace testing at the actual location.
- If a point reports a weak connection or performance remains erratic, move it closer to its upstream point or to a higher, less obstructed location, then test again.
- Change one placement at a time so you can tell whether the adjustment helped.
A weak link between mesh points can limit the extended network even when a point is physically near the room that needs coverage. Moving it closer to the upstream point may improve that link.

Account for bands, interference, and the internet connection
Wi-Fi performance depends on more than distance: obstacles, interference, the band in use, device capabilities, and the ISP connection all matter. FCC guidance says 5 GHz can be faster but has shorter range than 2.4 GHz. Compatible systems may steer devices between bands, and some smart-home devices support only 2.4 GHz. A 6 GHz connection requires compatible equipment and client devices; a newer band does not automatically mean better whole-home coverage (FCC consumer guidance; Google: How Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi bands work).
Nearby Wi-Fi networks can contribute to congestion. The FCC also identifies sources such as microwaves and baby monitors as potential interference concerns (FCC consumer guidance). If a connection is slow even near the router, check the internet service and, where practical, wired performance before buying more Wi-Fi points. A coverage product cannot fix a slow connection from the ISP.

Use Ethernet for fixed devices or supported mesh links
A direct Ethernet connection can provide a stationary device with a dependable high-speed link and reduce its use of Wi-Fi airtime. Some mesh systems also support wired connections between nodes, but support varies; check the documentation for the exact system. Ethernet requires a workable cable route and does not itself provide wireless coverage to mobile devices (FCC consumer guidance).
