To protect your windows, balcony belongings and indoor air from construction dust, reduce dust at its source, keep outside air from entering during dusty periods, and capture particles that get indoors. Ask the contractor or building manager about dust controls and nearby air intakes; close and safely seal obvious gaps when dust is visible; use a room-sized air cleaner; and damp-clean settled dust rather than sweeping it into the air.
Before work starts, ask how dust will be controlled
Contact the contractor or building manager before the dustiest work begins. Ask what dust suppression and cleanup measures are planned, where nearby air intakes are, and when especially dusty tasks are scheduled. If an intake is near the work, ask how it will be protected. The CDC recommends assessing these issues in its construction guidance for healthcare facilities; those are useful principles for residents, not residential regulations.
Dust control at the work site matters: an air cleaner inside your home cannot prevent dust from being generated or entering through every route. The CDC guidance discusses dust suppression, including misting, in construction settings. For work inside your own home, the EPA describes containing the work area and exhausting air outdoors when appropriate, but improvised exhaust can depressurize a home and may backdraft combustion appliances. Get qualified advice before setting up an exhaust fan if your home has fuel-burning equipment.
Protect windows and doors during dusty periods
When dust is visible or the contractor identifies a particularly dusty task, close windows and balcony doors where practical. Check for obvious gaps around frames and doors. Weatherstripping or temporary sealing may help close an identified gap, but do not block required ventilation, drainage, window operation, fire safety or emergency egress.
#1 Best Overall
- Draft Guard, Blocks Cold Air, Keeps Warm Air In: Seals the gap under interior doors to stop chilly drafts from entering and warm air from escaping. Maintains a steady room temperature so your home feels cozy in winter and cool in summer.
- Flexible Design & Easy Installation: 2 rolls per purchase, the seal strip measures 1.8"W x 33Ft total length, suitable for gaps up to 1.2 inches wide. Conforms easily to uneven door gaps and door frames. Simply measure, cut to desired length, peel the backing, and press onto a cleaned surface for an instant seal.
- Energy Saving & Lower Bills: Effectively blocks airflow through door and window gaps, stopping heated or cooled air from escaping year-round. Works as a reliable insulation solution for all seasons, helping reduce energy waste and lower monthly electricity bills.
- Reliable Adhesion & Pro Tip: The clear backing grips firmly and holds up through daily use and temperature shifts. Pro Tip: Clean the surface thoroughly, then warm the backing with a hair dryer for 1 minute before pressing to strengthen the bond.
- Multi-Purpose Door Gap Seal Strip: Suitable for shower glass door bottoms to help reduce water splashes and seepage. Works as weather stripping for door and window gaps, including bedroom doors, sliding doors, wardrobe doors, and windows. Helps block drafts, insects, dust, smoke, and light gaps.
CDC construction guidance for healthcare facilities recommends checking window and door seals and sealing openings near exterior construction. Homes differ from hospitals, so treat this as a practical principle rather than a requirement for your residence. If dust continues to enter despite closed, intact windows, ask building management to investigate shared systems and other entry points.
Keep balcony belongings from collecting dust
Bring cushions, toys, laundry and other dust-catching items indoors before dusty work, or cover them. Once the work or dust event has passed, remove covers carefully so collected dust is not tipped into the home. Wipe balcony items with a damp cloth before bringing them inside, and launder washable covers as appropriate. These are sensible household precautions; the cited official guidance does not establish a balcony-specific residential cleaning protocol.

Ventilate when outdoor air is cleaner
Keeping windows closed during a dusty period reduces one route for dust to enter, but a home still needs appropriate ventilation. Open windows or use other outdoor-air ventilation when conditions are suitable and the air outside is not dusty. EPA identifies source control and clean-air ventilation as the most effective general approaches to improving indoor air; filtration is a supplement, not a substitute. Its consumer guide says: “Filtration does not replace the need to control pollutants and ventilate.”
Choose an air cleaner for the room you use most
A portable particle air cleaner can capture some airborne dust that reaches a room. Put it in the room used most, leave its airflow unobstructed, and select a unit with a clean air delivery rate (CADR) appropriate for that room. EPA’s approximate particle-removal sizing assumes an 8-foot ceiling:

- Seals two average size windows or one door
- Installs in channel or held in place with adhesive backing
- Replaces worn pile weatherstrip on many types of doors and windows
- Durable but stays flexible
| Room area | Approximate CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 square feet | 65 cfm |
| 200 square feet | 130 cfm |
| 300 square feet | 195 cfm |
These are EPA estimates, not a promise of a particular exposure reduction. A room with a higher ceiling may need a larger-capacity unit. Higher fan speeds and longer run times filter more air, but choose a setting you can tolerate; noise can affect whether you keep it running. Check filter replacement costs and availability, keep the intake and outlet clear, and avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone. EPA describes ozone as a lung irritant and notes that some ionizing or related technologies can emit it. CADR measures particle delivery, not performance against gases or volatile organic compounds.
EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models. Its guidance is about selecting and using a cleaner, not endorsing a product.

Use central HVAC filters only if the system can handle them
If your home has central heating or cooling, EPA advises using a MERV 13 filter—or the highest rating the system can accommodate. A filter that is too restrictive for the equipment can interfere with operation, so consult an HVAC professional if you are unsure. Use the correct dimensions, ensure the filter fits snugly, and replace it when dirty.
Window air-conditioner filters generally protect the equipment and offer limited filtration; do not rely on them to remove fine indoor particles. A portable room air cleaner and a compatible central filter serve different purposes, and neither prevents dust from entering the home.

Tear silicon sealing tape paste to the appropriate location cut to the convenient length you need and stick it to the gap or frame. The dry, non-dust, non-water surface will result in a good effect. if the temperature is low, it would be better if you use an electric hair drier to heat the back adhesive
- WEATHER STRIPPING DOOR SEAL STRIP: Silicone seal strip with a premium adhesive, strong, sticks firmly, and can work for a long time. The backing adhesive is great, allowing you to use it in extreme weather, not damaged or affected viscosity by sun and rain.
Clean settled dust without stirring it up
After dust has settled, damp-wipe surfaces and wet-mop hard floors. Avoid dry sweeping, which can put settled dust back into the air. If using a vacuum, a Massachusetts Department of Public Health search-result excerpt recommends HEPA vacuuming alongside wet wiping or mopping in occupied buildings; its page was not accessible, so this should not be treated as a complete cleanup protocol.
If dust persists, seems to come through shared building systems, or may contain hazardous material, contact building management or a qualified professional rather than escalating DIY cleanup.
Take extra care with older homes and hazardous dust
General dust precautions are not a safe protocol for disturbing lead-based paint. EPA says homes built before 1978 may have lead paint; renovation that disturbs it can require certified firms and special work practices. Do not sand, scrape or otherwise disturb suspected lead paint, and do not use ordinary household cleanup as a substitute for lead-safe work. Consult EPA’s remodeling guidance and seek qualified help.
