Set your Bosch laser level on firm, stable support, select the projection that fits the job, and use automatic leveling when you need a true horizontal or vertical reference. Wait for the model’s level indication, then mark the center of the projected line. Bosch models differ, so check the manual for your exact model before choosing controls, mounts, or accuracy checks.
Before you switch it on: identify the model and check the tool
Find the model name and article or part number on the tool, then locate its Bosch operating manual. Do not assume that a control layout, leveling range, or mount specification from one model applies to another. Check that the housing is intact and the laser exit window is clean.
Bosch’s 2015 GLL 2-20 operating and safety instructions warn that impacts, falls, and temperature changes can affect accuracy. If that model has taken a heavy shock, its manual advises comparing the beam with a known horizontal or vertical reference. Use the corresponding procedure in your own model’s manual.
Set the laser on stable, compatible support
Place the tool on firm support or attach it to a tripod or mount designed for that model. A tripod provides stable support and makes it easier to adjust the beam height. Confirm the connection before buying or fitting accessories: Bosch specifies a 1/4-inch tripod mount for the GLL 2-20, while its GLL 55 product page lists a magnetic L mount and 1/4-inch and 5/8-inch mounting threads. Package contents also vary; do not assume a bracket or tripod is included.

- DURABLE: The green laser level is IP55 rated to withstand tough jobsite conditions such as rain or dust
- EASY-TO-USE: The BOSCH laser level is ergonomic, compact and lightweight for easy use and storage
- POWER FLEXIBILITY: The BOSCH laser leveler works with two AA batteries (included) or BOSCH's 3.7V Lithium-Ion 1.0 Ah battery (sold separately), for less downtime on the job
- ACCURACY: This self leveling laser level has bright, thin lines that level within 5/16 inch accuracy at 30 feet
- GREEN-BEAM: The green beam laser lines are up to 4x brighter than standard red beams
Turn on automatic leveling and wait for the reference to settle
Use the automatic-leveling position or control shown in your model’s manual. In automatic mode, a self-leveling laser compensates only within its specified range; it cannot correct an unlimited tilt in the support surface.
For the GLL 2-20, Bosch specifies a self-leveling range of ±4°. Its manual says leveling is complete when the beams stop moving; if the tool is beyond its leveling range, its warning indicator lights. Reposition it within range and wait for the beams to settle. Bosch describes an out-of-level indication on the GLL 55 as well, but consult that model’s manual for the indicator and controls.

- Power flexibility works with two AA batteries (included) or Bosch's 3.7V Lithium-Ion 1.0 Ah battery (sold separately), for less downtime on the job
- Full rubber overmold housing - helps protect every major impact point, with a design similar to a roll cage
- Integrated multipurpose laser mount - positions and mounts with magnets or threaded mounts (1/4 In.-20)
- Jobsite tough construction - IP 55 rating offers dust- and water-resistance
- Cross-line mode - projects two level and plumb lines
Choose the projection that matches the indoor task
- Horizontal line: Use it as a reference for aligning items such as shelves, cabinets, or trim.
- Vertical line: Use it as a plumb reference when aligning items vertically.
- Cross-line: Use the intersecting horizontal and vertical references when a task calls for both axes.
The GLL 2-20 supports horizontal, vertical, and cross-line operation; other models may differ. On the GLL 2-20, automatic leveling can be turned off for inclined work, but Bosch cautions that the crossing beams in that mode are not necessarily at a right angle. Do not use manual mode when the job depends on a true level or square reference.
Transfer the line to your marks
Mark the center of the projected line rather than either edge. Bosch notes that line width changes with distance, so using one edge can shift the reference. Keep the support steady while marking. If the tool moves, vibrates, or re-levels, compare the projected line with your established reference marks before continuing.

- 360 coverage level with one setup point for an entire room at a working range of 100 Ft. in diameter

Use the beam safely
- Never aim the beam at a person or animal, and do not stare into a direct or reflected beam—even from a distance.
- Laser viewing glasses improve visibility; they are not safety goggles and do not protect against laser radiation.
- Keep children from using the tool without supervision, do not leave it switched on unattended, and turn it off after use.
These warnings appear in the GLL 2-20 manual. Follow the safety instructions supplied with your own model.
Turn it off, store it, and check accuracy when needed
Switch off the tool when finished and during transport. On the GLL 2-20, Bosch says switching it off locks the leveling unit. Its manual also advises protecting the tool from moisture and direct sunlight, avoiding extreme temperature changes, and storing or transporting it in its protective pouch; follow your model’s care instructions.

- Five-point plumb and level point projection – accurately transfers and aligns level, plumb, 90° and grade points
- Built-in VisiMax technology – monitors power consumption to maximize point visibility and extend battery life
- Bright green-beam laser – up to 4X brighter than standard red beams
- Full rubber overmold housing – helps protect every major impact point, with a design similar to a roll cage
- Smart Pendulum System – allows tool to self-level, and it indicates out-of-level condition
Bosch’s GLL 2-20 manual describes accuracy-check procedures and advises checking against a known reference after a heavy impact or shock. The sources here do not establish one periodic calibration schedule for every Bosch laser level. If your model’s check fails, follow Bosch’s service guidance rather than attempting an unsupported field adjustment.

| Model and source | Documented figures | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| GLL 2-20, Bosch manual (2015) | ±4° self-leveling range; typical leveling time of 4 seconds; approximately 20 m diameter working range; leveling accuracy of ±0.4 mm/m | Use the manual for the model’s controls, warning behavior, and accuracy-check procedure. |
| GLL 55, Bosch Tools US product page (accessed 2026) | Up to 50 ft. working range; ±1/8 in. accuracy at 33 ft.; self-leveling up to 4° | The page lists red Class II beams, a magnetic bracket, target plate, and three AA batteries in package contents. Verify the current listing and exact package. |
When comparing models or accessories, check the projection modes, self-leveling range, stated working range and accuracy, beam visibility conditions and color, mount thread, power arrangement, and whether a bracket, target, or receiver is included or supported. A number without its model and stated conditions is not a reliable basis for choosing or using a level.
