The Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle reports that the Board of Education discussed the scope on Sept. 28, 2026. Although its headline says the board “approves” the plan, the accessible article text does not show the vote or establish the board’s precise action.
What is District 161 building in 2027?
The reported summer 2027 scope is a roughly $10.3 million construction plan intended to complete major renovations at Flossmoor Hills and Western Avenue schools. The Chronicle’s accessible report does not itemize the renovation components, so details such as which rooms or building systems are included are not established there.
Which schools are included?
- Flossmoor Hills Elementary: included in the major renovation work.
- Western Avenue Elementary: included in the major renovation work.
- Serena Hills Elementary: included for a separate waterproofing project; the report does not describe the work in more detail.
The school names are also listed on District 161’s official website.
Did the school board approve the $10.3 million plan?
The Chronicle reports that the board discussed the 2027 scope on Sept. 28, 2026, and its Oct. 2 headline says “approves.” But the accessible article body ends before showing a vote or explaining the board’s action. On that evidence alone, the approval cannot be independently confirmed. A meeting record or complete report would be needed to establish whether the board formally approved the scope, and on what terms.

#1 Best Overall
How much will the full construction program cost?
The Chronicle headline gives an overall program value of $35.9 million. Its accessible text does not show how that total was calculated or which projects and time periods it includes. Treat it as the headline’s stated program total, not as an itemized or independently verified accounting.
How the project estimate differs from budget figures
In a separate report on the district’s 2026–27 budget, the Chronicle reported $53.8 million in operating revenue, $53.5 million in operating expenditures, a projected operating surplus of $279,935, and $8.97 million in construction spending. Those are budget figures; the report does not say that the construction-spending amount funds the summer 2027 scope.
Rank #2
The $10.3 million figure is a reported estimate for the 2027 work, while the $35.9 million is the overall program value stated in the headline. Neither should be confused with the separate 2026–27 budget’s construction-spending figure.

In May 2026, the Chronicle reported that the board approved a $280,958 fee letter with Wold Architects and Engineers for architectural and engineering services and design and bid-package work related to the Flossmoor Hills and Western Avenue 2027 classroom refresh projects. That authorization covered professional and design work; the report does not establish that a construction contract was awarded.
