If the chair rolls frequently, Quick-Step advises using both soft castors and a protective mat on its hardwood floors. Check the matโs backing, coverage and your floorโs warranty before installing it.
Why office chairs scratch hardwood
Rolling can press dirt and other abrasive particles between a caster and the floor, where they may scratch the finish. Wheels can also dent or mark flooring if their shape or material is unsuitable. Panasonicโs wood-flooring care guidance warns about damage from dragging chairs and abrasive sand, and recommends cleaning around chair feet and casters. Its advice is from a Japanese manufacturer page and may relate to Panasonic flooring products, so check your own floor makerโs instructions.
What to do first: clean the floor and casters
- Inspect the rolling area. Look for grit, debris or anything caught in the casters.
- Clean the floor and wheels. Use the cleaning method approved for your flooring product; avoid dragging the chair while cleaning.
- Keep the area clear. Regularly remove dirt where the chair rolls so particles are less likely to become trapped under a wheel.
Panasonic specifically advises periodic cleaning around chair feet and caster use. Follow the maintenance guidance for your own floor rather than assuming care instructions for one wood product apply to another.
Choose protection that suits your floor and chair
Soft casters
Soft casters can help reduce wear, but they must fit the chair and be suitable for the flooring. Quick-Step says soft castors considerably extend the life of its hardwood flooring; this is manufacturer guidance for its product range, not a guarantee for every wood finish or chair. Panasonic cautions that small or metal casters and spherical casters can cause dents or scratches. Check your floor makerโs recommendations and the chair manufacturerโs caster-fit requirements before replacing wheels.

A chair mat approved for hardwood
Choose a mat explicitly approved for your hardwood product and sized to cover the chairโs full movement area. Quick-Step recommends a transparent protective mat for hard floor coverings, without profiling on the back, and large enough for the area. Tarkettโs 2025 hardwood care document recommends a chair pad approved for hardwood beneath furniture subjected to repetitive caster action, including desk chairs and roller carts.
Do not assume a mat is safe just because it is sold for hard floors. Panasonic warns that carpet or floor-mat backing may adhere to a floor surface. Confirm backing and finish compatibility with the flooring maker, and check whether the mat can shift or trap grit beneath it.

Stationary glides
If you do not need the chair to roll, floor-approved stationary glides may be an option to investigate. Confirm that they fit the chair base, provide stable support and use a contact material approved for your floor. There is no universal glide recommendation for every office-chair base and hardwood finish.
Do you need both soft casters and a mat?
For frequent rolling, using both may be the more protective approach, provided both are compatible with your floor. Quick-Step expressly advises combining soft castors and a protective mat in cases of intensive caster-chair traffic on its floors; it does not define an intensity threshold. For less frequent use, check the guidance for your exact flooring product rather than treating either option as universally sufficient.

Check the flooring guide and warranty before fitting anything
Hardwood, engineered wood, laminate and resilient flooring do not necessarily share the same care requirements. Identify your floorโs brand and product, then review its current care guide and warranty for approved caster types, chair pads and mat backing. Shawโs Repel hardwood warranty, for example, lists dirty or improperly operating casters and failure to take precautions to protect furniture legs and feet among conditions not covered. That wording is specific to the cited product; it is not a rule for every hardwood warranty.
Tarkettโs 2025 hardwood care document also advises asking the rug manufacturer whether a rug is safe with engineered wood flooring. Do not treat rug guidance as automatic approval for a chair mat: verify the specific mat and floor combination.
