A UK 13A socket is rated for 13 amps—about 3,000 watts at nominal 230V. The exact calculation is 13 × 230 = 2,990W, so 3,000W is a rounded guide, not a guarantee that every circuit, extension lead or older installation can safely supply that much.
How many watts can a 13A socket handle?
For a simple estimate at nominal 230V, multiply amps by volts to estimate watts, or divide watts by 230 to estimate amps. A 2,000W appliance draws about 8.7A; 13A corresponds to 2,990W. Electrical Safety First describes 3,000W as the maximum rating of a wall socket (Electrical Safety First: Overloading Sockets).
These calculations are a guide to the electrical load only. They do not assess the condition of the wiring, circuit, socket contacts or installation. Follow the lowest rating marked on any socket accessory, extension lead, cable reel or appliance, and its manufacturer’s instructions.
Can you run two appliances from one socket?
It depends on their combined load and the ratings of everything supplying them. Add the wattage of appliances running at the same time, or estimate their combined current by dividing the total watts by 230. If an extension lead or adapter is involved, its rating may be lower than the wall socket’s; that lower rating is the one to observe.

- 200-250V rated voltage
Electrical Safety First says most extension leads are rated at 13A, but some older leads and many cable reels may be rated at 10A or less. Never plug one extension lead into another: this can cause the wall socket to overheat. More outlets do not create more supply capacity.
What changes when you use a cable reel?
Check the reel’s marked rating and instructions. Electrical Safety First says a cable reel’s current rating is typically as low as 3A or 4A when the cable is wound. If you need its full rating, fully unwind the cable; do not assume the wound rating is the same as the unwound rating.

- 1. Multifunctional power monitoring that simultaneously measures key parameters such as power, energy consumption, voltage, and current, providing a one-stop solution for daily power consumption monitoring and electricity bill tracking.
- 2. Equipped with a high-precision metering chip and a large, high-definition digital display, it provides clear and intuitive data readings; it is plug-and-play, requiring no additional setup—simply connect it to start using it.
- 3. Compatible with the vast majority of household appliances and small devices, it features an overload alert function to help identify abnormal power consumption, promoting efficient energy use and helping you save on electricity bills.
What does the plug fuse protect?
The fuse in a UK plug is a safety device: it can blow if the appliance or lead draws excessive current because of an overload or fault, helping prevent overheating and fire. It does not increase the socket’s capacity. Electrical Safety First says a standard UK plug is usually fitted with a 3A or 13A fuse and gives 700–3,000W as general guidance for appliances using a 13A fuse. Replace a fuse only with one of the same rating (Electrical Safety First: Overloading Sockets).
The 13A rating sits within the UK plug-and-socket standards system. The British Standards Institution says the BS 1363 series covers safety, construction, dimensional accuracy, testing and marking. Its current edition for 13A switched and unswitched shuttered socket-outlets is BS 1363-2:2023, published on 30 June 2023 (BSI: BS 1363-2:2023).

- 【Clear LCD Display & Bottom Indicators】- Equipped with a vibrant color LCD display, this tester shows whether an outlet is wired correctly (green for good, orange for faults) and displays real-time voltage. Bottom indicator lights enhance visibility in dark or tight spaces. The intuitive design makes it easy to read wiring status and voltage at a glance.
- 【Electrical Problem Checker】- Designed for North American 3-wire 120V outlets with CAT II 300V safety certification. Quickly test outlet voltage and detect seven common wiring faults: Correct Wiring, Open Ground, Open Neutral, Missing Live, Live & Ground Reversed, and Live & Neutral Reversed etc, ensuring safe and reliable electrical connections.
- 【One-Click GFCI Tester】- Press and hold the built-in button for 2 seconds to test the GFCI breaker. If it trips, the ground fault protection works. Use caution on regular outlets, as testing may cause wiring to trip. Ensure proper wiring and leakage current above 5mA for accurate results.
- 【Auto Hold for Hard-to-Reach Outlets】- The auto hold function captures test results, so you can easily check outlets behind furniture or in tight corners without needing to bend or rush. Perfect for home inspections and routine safety checks in older buildings or renovation projects.
- 【3 Year Warranty】- KAIWEETS provides a 3-year warranty and professional customer support. Package includes: 1× GFCI Outlet Tester, 2× AAA Batteries, and 1× User Manual. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
What warning signs mean you should stop using a socket?
Stop using the outlet and unplug the appliance if you notice heat, burn marks, buzzing or crackling, a blown fuse, or a circuit-breaker that trips. Contact the retailer, manufacturer or a qualified repair technician rather than continuing to use equipment that shows these signs. Electrical Safety First also explains that an RCD helps protect against electric shock from a faulty product; it does not raise the socket’s load limit (Electrical Safety First: Overloading Sockets).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you replace a single socket with a double?
Not necessarily. Whether a single socket can be replaced with a double depends on the installation. Electrical Safety First says an electrician should assess the load, circuit type and cable rating before such a change. A plug-in power meter can show an appliance’s draw, but it cannot inspect wiring or establish that the installation is safe (Electrical Safety First: Overloading Sockets).
