To help prevent mold and musty odors, remove as much wash water as the rug’s care instructions allow, then dry it promptly with air moving around and beneath it. Get it off a damp floor, dry any pad and backing, and reduce room humidity if needed. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends drying wet or damp materials within 24–48 hours; treat that as a prevention target, not a guarantee for every rug.
1. Check the rug’s care instructions first
Rugs differ in fiber, backing, dyes, and construction, so there is no single washing or drying method that is safe for all of them. Before extracting water or applying heat, check the care label or the manufacturer’s instructions. Take extra care with delicate, valuable, specialty-fiber, or backed rugs; contact a qualified rug-care professional if you are unsure.
2. Remove as much water as you safely can
If the care instructions permit it, use a wet/dry or water-extraction vacuum to remove excess wash water. The EPA recommends water extraction for carpet and backing, a relevant approach for a washable rug. Avoid a method that could damage the rug or its backing.
3. Expose and dry the underside, backing, pad, and floor
Move the rug off any damp flooring so air can reach its underside. If it has a separate pad or underlayer, dry that as well, and check the floor beneath it. The rug’s surface can feel dry while moisture remains trapped below. The EPA warns that carpet backing or padding must dry too, or mold is likely to result.

4. Move air across the rug and lower room humidity
Use a fan to move air around the rug and across its exposed underside. A dehumidifier can lower humidity in the room while the rug dries. EPA guidance identifies 30–60% indoor relative humidity as a target for reducing mold growth; that is a room-humidity recommendation, not a measurement of whether the rug is dry.
The equipment serves different purposes:

These are functional options, not a requirement to buy all three. Choose a method that suits the rug and the drying location, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

5. Use 24–48 hours as a target, not a promise
The EPA advises drying wet or damp materials within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold. Its guidance says that in most cases mold will not grow if wet or damp items are dried within that period, but this is general guidance—not a rug-specific drying-time test or a guarantee. Rug size, construction, backing, and drying conditions can affect how long it takes.
Keep checking the backing, underside, pad, and floor for dampness rather than relying only on how the top feels. The EPA’s Mold Course Chapter 4 gives this advice for carpet and backing: “To dry carpet and backing within 48 hours, remove water with a wet vacuum, pull the carpet and pad off the floor and dry them using a fan to blow air over them.” Rugs vary, so apply the principle of extraction and airflow only where the rug’s care instructions allow.

6. Know when to get professional help
The EPA’s cited carpet-drying guidance concerns clean-water damage. It recommends professional help when water damage is extensive or the water is not clean. Consider a qualified rug-cleaning or water-damage professional for a valuable or difficult-to-dry rug, extensive wetting, contaminated water, or existing mold. EPA guidance does not establish fiber-specific drying instructions for wool, silk, antique, or other delicate rugs.
