For a straightforward everyday grill, start with a Weber kettle; for low-and-slow cooking with digital controls, consider a Masterbuilt gravity-fed model; for high-heat and slow cooking in one cooker, look at a ceramic kamado. These eight picks cover those formats and more. The comparison is US-focused, and prices and model availability can vary by retailer and location.
How to choose among these charcoal grills
First decide how you will use the grill. A kettle is a versatile, familiar choice for burgers and indirect cooking. A kamado holds heat and can handle both high-heat grilling and slower cooks, but its ceramic construction makes it heavy and its cooking surface may be smaller than that of some steel grills. Gravity-fed models add digital temperature controls, while barrel and offset designs suit cooks who want a larger grilling or smoking setup. Portable kettles trade capacity for easier transport.
Compare cooking area with the grill’s footprint, not in isolation. A manufacturer’s estimate of how many people a grill can serve is not the same as an independently tested capacity. Also check how the particular model arranges fuel, controls airflow, handles ash, and provides access to replacement parts and warranty support.
| Grill | Format | Cooking area reported in the reviewed coverage | Best suited to |

| Kamado Joe Classic Joe II | Ceramic kamado | 250 sq in (BBQ Report comparison table) | Heat-retentive grilling and low-and-slow cooking |
| Char-Griller AKORN | Insulated steel kamado-style grill | Not stated in the cited roundup details | A kamado-style option to compare with ceramic models |
| Oklahoma Joe’s Highland | Traditional smoker-grill | Not stated in the cited roundup details | Smoking-focused cooks who also want grilling capability |
| Royal Gourmet CC1830T | Barrel grill | 627 sq in (BBQ Report comparison table) | A larger barrel-style grilling setup |
| Weber Jumbo Joe | Portable kettle | Not stated in the cited roundup details | Portable outdoor grilling |
Area figures are not a standardized measure of usable cooking capacity across designs. The 363 sq in figure is from Weber’s US specifications; the other stated figures are reported by BBQ Report, not independently verified here.

The eight best charcoal grills
1. Weber Master-Touch 26-inch — best for a larger kettle setup
The Master-Touch keeps the straightforward kettle format but adds features that make charcoal placement more flexible. Weber lists Char-Rails for arranging fuel for direct or indirect cooking, an adjustable damper system, a lid thermometer, and a hinged stainless-steel grate. Its product page says the grate has room for 8–10 people; treat that as Weber’s serving estimate, not a capacity test. The page also lists a tuck-away lid holder and compatibility with Weber’s circular GBS and square Crafted grillware.
Choose it if you want a kettle and value the larger-format setup and fuel-arrangement options. Check the grill’s footprint against your patio or storage space before buying. The source material does not give a comparable cooking-area figure for this model.
2. Weber Original Kettle Premium 22-inch — best for everyday charcoal grilling
This is the simplest all-rounder in the group: a conventional kettle with adjustable lid and bowl dampers, a plated-steel cooking grate, and Weber’s One-Touch cleaning system. Weber’s US product page lists 363 sq in of primary and total cooking area, a porcelain-enameled bowl and lid, and charcoal fuel. Weber also says the grill holds up to 13 burgers measured with its burger press; that is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent serving test.

Weber’s US listing identifies model #741001. Its warranty is component-specific: up to 10 years for the bowl and lid, five years for One-Touch cleaning parts and plastic components under stated limits, and two years for remaining parts. Read the current warranty terms for exclusions and conditions. The page showed a $149 price when reviewed on October 3, 2026; that is a time-specific listing, not a guaranteed current or recurring price.
3. Masterbuilt Gravity Series 1050 — best for digital temperature control and larger cooks
A gravity-fed charcoal grill is a different proposition from a kettle: it feeds charcoal from a hopper and uses digital controls to manage cooking temperature. Food Network includes the Gravity Series 1050 as its digitally controlled pick, and BBQ Report reports 1,050 sq in of cooking area. Those are publisher descriptions and reported specifications, rather than an independent verification of usable space or temperature performance.
Consider it if you want charcoal flavor alongside electronic temperature management and need a larger reported cooking area. Before purchasing, confirm the current model’s control features, hopper and ash-handling details, app compatibility, warranty, and availability with the manufacturer or seller.
Rank #3
- Generous Cooking Area: This charcoal grill offers a roomy 626 sq. in. cooking zone. It has 475 sq. in. porcelain-enameled steel wire cooking grates and an 151 sq. in. chrome-plated steel wire warming rack. You can easily cook large pieces of meat all at once, perfect for big family BBQs or gatherings
- Easy Heat Control: Take charge of your barbeque grill! Close the side air vent fully to cut off oxygen and extinguish coals when done. Plus, adjust the smoke stack for extra heat tweaks. Whether searing steaks or slow-cooking burgers on these charcoal grills, you'll get the heat just right
- Adjustable Lifting Rack: The 2-level height-adjustable grill charcoal pan provides enhanced control over cooking temperatures by adjusting the distance between the food and the heat source
- Handy Temperature Monitor: The lid-mounted thermometer gauge on the barrel charcoal grill shows heat changes in real-time. Grill steaks medium-rare or burgers well-done with confidence, knowing the exact temp inside your charcoal grill
- Side Shelf with Hooks: The grill side shelf provides ample space for storing spices, tools, and other essentials, giving you room to organize everything you need for a smooth grilling experience. Integrated hooks allow you to easily hang your grilling utensils
4. Kamado Joe Classic Joe II — best for heat retention in a ceramic kamado
Kamados are thick-walled cookers designed to retain heat, making them versatile for high-heat grilling and longer cooks. BBQ Report lists the Classic Joe II at 250 sq in, while Tom’s Guide describes kamados as heat-retentive and versatile and notes the trade-offs: substantial weight, higher cost, and a relatively limited cooking surface compared with some alternatives.
This model suits someone who values that kamado style and is comfortable with its weight and smaller reported area. Verify the current Classic Joe II specifications, included accessories, and warranty for the exact regional version; do not assume details for another Kamado Joe series or size apply.
5. Char-Griller AKORN — best to compare when considering a kamado-style design
The AKORN is an insulated-steel kamado-style option included in Food Network’s roundup and listed in BBQSource’s buying guide. It gives buyers a different construction choice from a ceramic kamado, but the available comparison details do not establish a current cooking-area figure, build specification, or warranty for the exact model.
Rank #4
- This premium Weber kettle grill has space to hold up to 13 burgers made with a Weber burger press; The durable-plated steel cooking grate, crafted from premium steel, offers a resilient surface that stands up to the demands of frequent grilling
- Easy Ash Cleanup: The One-Touch cleaning system included in the black charcoal grill has a removable aluminized, high-capacity ash catcher allowing for efficient and less frequent removal of ash from the bottom of the grill
- Durability and Flavor Retention: Porcelain-enameled lid and bowl are engineered to withstand high temperatures and retain heat; Bowl and lid combination on outdoor grill resist rust and won't peel
- Glass-Reinforced Nylon Handles: Kettle grill's handles were crafted with precision and durability in mind; Reinforced with high-quality, glass-infused nylon, ensuring they can withstand the demands of frequent use and exposure to heat
- Real-Time Temperature Monitoring: Built-in Lid Thermometer takes the guesswork out of grilling, displaying the internal temperature of your black charcoal and BBQ grill
Compare the current manufacturer listing with ceramic alternatives before deciding. In particular, check the exact model and construction, grate area, included features, replacement-part availability, and warranty terms rather than relying on specifications for another AKORN version.
6. Oklahoma Joe’s Highland — best for a traditional smoker-grill format
Food Network includes the Highland as its traditional smoker pick. Its place in this guide is for cooks drawn to a smoker-grill combination rather than a compact, everyday kettle. The cited coverage does not establish a comparable cooking-area figure or current regional SKU details, so confirm the exact configuration and availability before buying.
Choose this style if smoking is central to your plans and you have space for a larger-format cooker. If your priority is quick weeknight grilling, a kettle may be a more straightforward fit.

7. Royal Gourmet CC1830T — best for a barrel-style grilling setup
BBQ Report lists the CC1830T as a barrel grill and reports 627 sq in of cooking area. That figure comes from the publisher’s comparison table and has not been independently verified here. It is useful as a starting point for comparing the model with other larger-format options, not as proof that all of the stated area is equally convenient for cooking.
Check the manufacturer’s current specifications for grate layout, footprint, fuel access, ash removal, and warranty. Those practical details matter as much as the area figure when deciding whether a barrel grill will fit your space and cooking routine.
8. Weber Jumbo Joe — best portable charcoal kettle
The Jumbo Joe brings the kettle format into a portable category. Food Network names it as its portable pick, and Ideal Home includes it among its tested roundup picks. It is worth considering for outdoor cooks who need a grill that is easier to transport than a full-size kettle, but the cited coverage does not provide a comparable cooking-area figure.
Confirm the current model’s dimensions and usable grate area before purchasing, especially if you expect to cook for a group. Portability does not make it suitable for indoor or enclosed-space use.

These recommendations draw on roundups that cover different models and use different selection approaches. Food Network says it selected 15 models and assessed setup, charcoal loading and lighting, and other use factors; its 2026 roundup names seven picks, not a single eight-model list. Ideal Home reports testing six charcoal barbecues and evaluating cooking performance, ease of use, temperature control, and value; that coverage is UK-focused, so its availability and prices should not be assumed to apply in the US. BBQ Report’s June 29, 2026 guide compares five models and reports the areas shown above for four of the picks in this list. These are the publishers’ methods and findings, not tests performed for this article.
Specifications, prices, and retailer listings can change. Check the current maker’s page for the exact model and market, particularly when comparing cooking area, warranty, or included accessories.
Quick Recap
Safe charcoal-grill use
- Use a charcoal grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area, never indoors or in an enclosed space. Weber’s owner’s guide warns that toxic fumes can accumulate indoors and cause serious injury or death.
- Do not use petrol, alcohol, or other highly volatile fluids to ignite charcoal; Weber’s guide specifically warns against them.
- Follow the owner’s guide for lighting, ventilation, placement, and handling hot fuel. Keep the grill away from enclosed areas and use only as intended by its manufacturer.
