For casual family sledding, a toboggan-style sled is a practical starting point: it has a familiar flat platform and comes in one- and two-rider formats. Choose a saucer for a simple single-rider disc, or a snow tube if cushioned comfort and compact storage matter more than steering. The right fit depends on who will ride, how much control you want, and whether the hill is suitable.

How the main types of snow sleds differ

These categories have different shapes and handling characteristics. The descriptions below are general guidance, not results from comparative product testing; features vary by model.

Toboggan-style sled

A toboggan-style sled is a long, flat platform with a raised or curved front. Modern versions are often plastic. Lowe’s buying guide describes models for one or two riders, often with a pull rope or handholds, and says riders can steer by shifting their weight. It is a versatile first option when you want a conventional sled shape or the possibility of riding with another person. Check the exact model’s capacity and instructions before use.

Snow tube

A snow tube is an inflatable round sled, sometimes with a hole in the middle and sometimes with a seat across the center. Lowe’s describes tubes as comfortable and potentially fast, but challenging to steer. They can be deflated for storage, which may suit people who value a cushioned ride and compact off-season storage over directional control.

  • Double Rider Sled: This classic 48-inch toboggan sled comfortably fits two riders—perfect for an adult with a child in their lap. Wide, contoured edges provide a secure grip for safer, more stable rides.
  • Fast Speed: Slick super sled hard plastic bottom flies down hills and glides over fresh snow without digging in—unlike many other snow gliders and play sleds. For maximum speed, apply wax to the flat sled base.
  • Kids & Adults Sled: Includes 3 sleds sized for riders ages 4 and up. Each sled measures 48 x 17 x 4 inches, weighs just 3.25 lbs, and supports up to 200 lbs. Built-in holes let you add your own pull rope (not included).

Saucer or disc

A saucer is a small, slightly concave circular sled, typically for one person. Lowe’s describes saucers as an economical, fast option that is harder to steer than a toboggan. Pick one if you want a straightforward single-rider disc and are comfortable with less predictable steering.

Runner sled

Traditional runner sleds use metal runners, but the available buying-guide information does not establish how they compare with other designs for handling, terrain, or rider fit. Check the maker’s instructions and the particular model’s design rather than assuming all runner sleds behave alike.

  1. Who will ride? Decide whether you need a single-rider sled or space for two. Check the exact sled’s age guidance, load limits, and instructions; category descriptions are not a substitute for those details.
  2. How much steering control matters? Lowe’s guide says tubes and saucers are more difficult to steer than toboggans. If a more conventional ride and steering by shifting weight appeal to you, consider a toboggan-style sled. This is a general category distinction, not a guarantee for every product.
  3. Is comfort or storage the priority? A tube may be appealing if you want a cushioned ride and the option to deflate it for storage. That convenience comes with the steering trade-off described above.
  4. Does the hill suit the sled and riders? Choose a designated sledding area, follow local facility rules, and read the sled maker’s directions. Do not assume any sled is suitable for a steep, crowded, obstructed, or otherwise unsuitable slope.

Use the sled on a suitable hill

The Girl Scouts of North Carolina Coastal Pines’ Sledding and Tobogganing activity guidance, updated August 2025, advises: “Stick to designated sledding, tobogganing, and snow-tubing hills away from roads or heavily wooded areas to enjoy sledding safely.” It also says participants should learn basic steering skills, including how to slow down and stop. Follow the facility’s rules and the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific sled.
