A Samsung washer showing SUD or a similar code is detecting excess suds, often because the detergent type or amount is wrong for that washer and load. Let the suds dissipate and follow the instructions for your model; Samsung says the washer may resume automatically, and Samsung UK recommends adding a rinse cycle to clear bubbles. The code alone does not mean the washer needs service.
What does Sud mean on a Samsung washing machine?
On supported Samsung washers, SUd indicates excessive suds. Samsung US also lists display variants including 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS and 5Ud5. The exact display conventions vary by model and market, so check the code in your washer’s manual rather than assuming every similar-looking code means the same thing. Too much detergent or detergent used incorrectly can create excess foam. This is distinct from a drainage fault: a code such as 5C/5E points to a draining malfunction, not the SUD condition. Samsung UK: washing machine troubleshooting.
How to clear a Samsung washer SUD error
- Check the exact display. Look up the code in the manual for your washer model. Display names and controls can differ by model and region.
- Give the suds time to settle. Samsung US says the washer pauses while foam dissipates, then the cycle automatically continues. Follow any on-screen or manual instructions for your model.
- Add a rinse cycle if the controls allow it. Samsung UK recommends adding a rinse to get rid of bubbles. The available cycle options and steps depend on the washer, so use its manual for the control sequence.
- Correct detergent use for the next wash. Check both the washer manual and the detergent packaging for the required detergent type and dose. Follow the dose guidance for the load; there is no universal amount for every Samsung washer.
Do not assume that buying or adding detergent will clear an active SUD display. The immediate guidance is to let foam dissipate and follow the washer’s instructions; detergent selection and dosing help prevent a recurrence.

Prevent the SUD code from returning
Use the detergent type specified for your washer and measure it according to the washer manual and product label. Samsung Australia advises using the correct amount of High Efficiency (HE) detergent for SUd/5Ud. Confirm that HE detergent is appropriate for your particular model and follow its dosing directions rather than relying on a general measurement or brand recommendation. When to check the drain instead
A SUD display by itself is not a reason to open the drain filter. Check drainage only if the washer also drains poorly or shows a separate 5C/5E code. Samsung UK recommends checking whether the drain hose is kinked, frozen or clogged. For front-load washers, a clogged debris filter may also be relevant; use the model manual for access and safety directions, and have a towel or container ready to catch water.

When to contact Samsung support
Samsung US states, “This code does not indicate that service is needed.” If SUD keeps returning after you have corrected detergent use and followed the model’s instructions, or if another fault code, a leak or a mechanical symptom appears, consult the manual and contact Samsung support for your region.
