An intarsia teddy woodworking plan gives you a full-size pattern and guidance for making a bear image from individually cut and shaped pieces of solid wood. The main choices are whether you want a flat wall panel or a keepsake box, how many pieces you’re comfortable fitting, and whether the plan supplies detailed cutting and finishing instructions.
What an intarsia teddy plan includes
Intarsia is a fitted-piece wood mosaic: each part of the image is cut from solid wood, shaped and sanded to help define its form, then joined to its neighbors. Different wood colors and grain directions create the bear’s features without relying on a printed picture. A teddy is a manageable subject because its recognizable outline and features can be divided into distinct pieces, though the number and complexity of those pieces vary by pattern.
Plans differ in what they make. Some are for a flat wall panel; others incorporate the image into a keepsake box. Check the project type before comparing piece counts or sizes.
Compare the available teddy plans
| Plan | Project and pieces | Finished size | Skill and included guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| WoodworkersWorkshop keepsake-box plan (published 2007) | Keepsake box plan with four animal designs, including a teddy; teddy piece count not stated in the listing. | Not stated in the listing. | The vendor says, “All building instructions and finishing guidelines included.” |
| Fantastic Woodworking Teddy Intarsia Pattern (listing accessed October 3, 2026) | 31-piece teddy pattern; plan size A3. | 335 × 275 mm (13 × 11 in), as stated by the vendor. | Vendor describes the project as “very straightforward”; no independent skill assessment is established. |
| I-246 Bears Three (listing accessed October 3, 2026) | Three bear designs: 29, 36 and 26 pieces. | Approximately 11½ × 9 in, 11 × 9½ in and 11 × 9 in, respectively. | Listing labels the set beginner/intermediate. |
Piece count helps estimate the amount of cutting and fitting, but it is not a complete difficulty rating: small interior details, tight joints and shaping can make a lower-piece-count design demanding. Confirm whether a listing supplies a printed plan or a PDF, and check the dimensions and instructions before ordering. Prices, stock and download delivery can change.

Choose wood and scroll-saw blades
Color contrast and grain are central to the finished image. WoodworkersWorkshop gives aspen, cherry, maple, red oak, walnut and white oak as example choices. The I-246 pattern specifies shades of Western Red Cedar and aspen for white areas.
For the I-246 project, the blade recommendation depends on the wood: Gold #5 blades for Western Red Cedar or other softwoods; Platinum Plus #5, Platinum #5 or TLB #5 blades for hardwoods. The pattern also lists smaller blades for interior lines. These are recommendations for that pattern, not a universal rule for every teddy design. Review the plan’s own #5 scroll-saw blade guidance and select blades suitable for its wood and cut details.

- Cut the pieces. The free reference calls for cutting both outside and inside lines with a scroll saw or coping saw. For intarsia, keep each labeled part identifiable and follow the plan’s blade guidance for the selected wood.
- Sand and shape. Smooth edges and shape the surfaces as specified so adjoining parts fit and the image gains dimension. Dry-fit pieces before glue-up; gaps or mismatched edges are easier to address before assembly.
