A practical DIY home automation greenhouse starts with one growing decision you want to improve—not a pile of sensors. Use Home Assistant to display readings and coordinate automations, and an ESPHome-compatible microcontroller such as an ESP32 to connect sensors and control hardware. Begin with air temperature and humidity monitoring, add alerts, then automate one task, such as ventilation or irrigation, with a manual fallback.
How can I automate a greenhouse with Home Assistant?
Think of the setup as four parts: measurements, a device that reports them, rules in Home Assistant, and an output that acts. Home Assistant’s official ESPHome integration connects to ESPHome devices through its native API; the documentation describes a persistent connection that can deliver state changes as they occur. That supports responsive automations, but it is not a guarantee of reliability or offline operation for every installation.
- Measure: Choose a reading that supports a real growing decision, such as air temperature for a ventilation alert.
- Connect: Configure a supported microcontroller with ESPHome to expose sensors and peripherals.
- Decide: Create a Home Assistant automation, such as notifying you when a reading crosses a threshold you selected for your crop and conditions.
- Act: Add a suitably rated fan, valve, pump, or other output only after checking its electrical and environmental requirements.
For a first build, monitor air temperature and humidity before controlling anything. Once the readings are visible and sensible, add one controlled function at a time. This makes it easier to spot whether a problem comes from a sensor, its placement, a rule, or an actuator.
Choose the measurements and control goal first
Write down the action you want the system to take, then work backward to the measurement, sensor location, output, and manual alternative. For example, an alert about hot air calls for an air-temperature reading in a representative location; automatic ventilation also needs a fan or vent actuator and a way to operate it manually.

| Measurement or approach | Useful for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Air temperature and humidity | Monitoring greenhouse conditions and informing ventilation decisions | Place the sensor where it reflects the conditions you care about, and protect it appropriately for a humid environment. |
| Growing-medium moisture | Informing a watering decision or alert | Readings depend on the sensor, medium, and installation. There is no universal moisture threshold established for all plants and setups. |
| Light, water temperature, leak, or nutrient-related measurements | Supporting a specific additional growing or maintenance decision | Add them only when you know what action the reading will inform; each introduces its own placement and interpretation needs. |
| Manual watering with alerts | Keeping watering under human control while surfacing useful readings | You still need to respond to alerts and have a workable way to water. |
| Automated valve or pump | Delivering water according to a rule or schedule | Account for water source, zones, flow or pressure, failure consequences, appropriate switching hardware, and a manual override. |
A community project, AutoGreenHouse, illustrates a broader set of measurements and hardware, including temperature, humidity, brightness, moisture, conductivity, a relay module, and a pH sensor. Treat it as an example of possible scope, not a required parts list or a validated design for your greenhouse.
Select a microcontroller and Home Assistant host
ESPHome supports ESP32 and other microcontroller families, with sensors and peripherals defined in device configuration. Choose a board based on the inputs and outputs you need, connectivity, firmware support, power arrangements, and where it will be installed—not on a blanket claim that one board is best. An ESP32 development board is a reasonable category to investigate for a custom build, but check pin compatibility and enclosure needs before choosing a specific model.

Home Assistant can run on a host you already use. A 2022 Novia University of Applied Sciences project report describes a greenhouse-related arrangement using Home Assistant hosted on a Raspberry Pi with an ESP32 and environmental sensing. It demonstrates one setup, not a requirement to buy a separate Raspberry Pi or a current hardware ranking.
Place and protect sensors for greenhouse conditions
Sensor location affects whether a reading represents the area relevant to a decision. Consider airflow, direct exposure to heat or moisture, proximity to plants, and whether the reading is taken where the actuator will have an effect. A sensor mounted in a location unlike the growing area may prompt an automation that does not match conditions where it matters.

Do not assume an indoor sensor is suitable for a humid or wet greenhouse. ESPHome’s HDC302x documentation warns that condensation can form below the dew point and prevent accurate humidity readings. Choose protection and placement appropriate to the sensor and environment. For growing-medium sensors, assess the readings in the medium and installation where they will be used rather than relying on a universal threshold.
Automate ventilation, irrigation, or another function gradually
ESPHome documents climate-control patterns and also lists a DIY irrigation controller example. The available climate behavior depends on the component and platform. ESPHome defines climate devices as hardware with a settable target temperature and modes such as HEAT, COOL, HEAT_COOL, or OFF; verify the chosen component’s supported functions before designing around a particular mode.

- Start with observation: Add the sensor to Home Assistant and check that readings update and make sense where the sensor is installed.
- Add a notification: Choose a threshold or schedule appropriate to the crop and conditions you are managing. Do not copy a generic setpoint as if it applied to every greenhouse.
- Test the rule without relying on it: Confirm the automation’s trigger, target device, and notification or output behavior while retaining a manual way to perform the task.
- Connect an actuator only after checking its requirements: Match the switching method and hardware to the actuator’s voltage, current, startup load, and installation environment.
- Expand one function at a time: Observe how the installed system behaves before adding further sensors, zones, or automatic actions.
Examples and documentation establish irrigation and climate control as possible DIY directions; they do not validate every pump, relay, valve, wiring arrangement, or greenhouse installation. The cited sources do not establish a specific mains-wiring plan. For mains-connected equipment, use components and installation practices appropriate to the equipment and applicable local requirements.

If you already have a greenhouse controller
An existing professional controller may already manage climate and irrigation. Home Assistant’s Ridder HortiMaX Pro integration is community-built and read-only, and is not certified or supported by Ridder. It is for observing supported information, not for controlling that system through Home Assistant automations. That integration does not establish whether another controller can be safely controlled by a DIY setup.
