For most self-hosted installations, the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE is the best ONVIF doorbell camera. It combines a wired network, manufacturer-listed ONVIF and RTSP, local microSD recording, 5 MP video, and person detection. Choose the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi when you have conventional doorbell power but cannot run Ethernet. DoorBird’s D1101V is the premium choice for access control and SIP-style intercom work. Amcrest and Hikvision models can be worthwhile alternatives, but their exact ONVIF conformance, firmware behavior, availability, and third-party event support need verification before purchase.
ONVIF is not a promise that every recorder feature will work. Check the exact model and firmware in the official ONVIF conformant-products database, then test video, events, audio, and the physical button with your intended NVR or VMS.

What ONVIF actually guarantees
ONVIF is an interoperability standard, not a single “works with everything” feature. RTSP can supply a video stream; ONVIF may add discovery, stream-URI retrieval, imaging controls, profiles and events, depending on the implementation. A recorder can therefore display video while failing to receive a button press, person metadata, motion zones, audio or two-way-talk controls.

Manufacturers’ “ONVIF-compatible” wording is not the same as an official conformance record. ONVIF says each model must be listed individually and that conformance applies to the registered firmware or software version. A later update is not automatically covered. Check the exact model, hardware revision and firmware in the conformance database and read ONVIF’s conformance FAQ.
Profile S and Profile T
Profile S is primarily associated with basic video streaming and device interaction, with some features conditional. Profile T covers newer video-streaming capabilities, including H.264/H.265-related functions and additional transport options, but the declared feature set still determines what a device actually exposes. ONVIF has announced that it plans to end support for Profile S and recommends Profile T as its replacement. See the Profile S specification, Profile T specification and ONVIF announcements.

“Wi‑Fi” does not mean battery powered: this model still needs reliable wired power. Signal strength, interference, channel congestion and access-point placement can cause dropped RTSP frames or delayed live view even when ONVIF itself is functioning. Place the access point close enough for a strong connection, keep the camera on a trusted network and prefer PoE when 24/7 recording and maximum stability matter.
Qualified alternatives
Amcrest AD410
The AD410 is a 4 MP dual-band Wi‑Fi doorbell and a reasonable candidate for households already using Amcrest cameras. The official listing showed $154.99 but was out of stock when crawled. The available documentation did not establish a current official ONVIF conformance record, exact profile, RTSP authentication method or complete event and audio behavior. Treat it as a plausible alternative, not a guaranteed plug-and-play recommendation. Verify the exact firmware in ONVIF’s database and confirm manual RTSP, ONVIF discovery, motion, button, audio and talk functions with your recorder.
Amcrest AD110
The AD110 is a lower-cost, 1080p-class 2.4 GHz model with a listed 140-degree view, two-way audio and IP55 rating. Its category listing showed $104.99 and out-of-stock status when crawled. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PoE, Wi‑Fi and doorbell wiring
PoE
- Power and data share one cable.
- Usually more stable for 24/7 recording and camera VLANs.
- Requires a suitable PoE switch, injector or NVR and a Cat5e/Cat6 run.
Wi‑Fi
- Easier to retrofit without Ethernet.
- Still requires dependable wired power for continuous operation.
- Performance depends on access-point coverage, interference, congestion and network routing.
Conventional power checks
- Confirm voltage range and AC versus DC support.
- Check transformer capacity under load.
- Determine whether the included or existing mechanical chime needs a bypass, replacement or separate power path.
- Confirm whether continuous recording is supported in the chosen power mode.
Video framing and recording matter more than megapixels
At a front door, vertical coverage can matter more than headline resolution. Check whether the lens shows a visitor’s face at close range and packages near the threshold. Evaluate mounting height, door-side blind spots, backlight from the porch or sky, WDR/HDR behavior, night exposure, motion blur and IR reflections from walls or trim. A higher-resolution sensor with poor close-range framing may identify less than a lower-resolution camera mounted correctly.
Separate the recording methods: camera microSD, ONVIF recording by an NVR, RTSP recording by Frigate or another VMS, NAS recording, and optional vendor cloud storage. Event-only recording saves space; continuous recording provides a fuller record. Pre-motion capture can preserve the seconds before an alert, but retention depends on bitrate, resolution, frame rate and storage capacity.
Verify compatibility before buying
- Write down the exact model number, region, hardware revision and shipped firmware.
- Search that exact combination in the ONVIF database and record the registered firmware.
- Check that your NVR or VMS supports the declared ONVIF profile, codec and audio requirements.
- Confirm voltage, transformer capacity, PoE class or injector needs, chime requirements and any hub or indoor station.
- Confirm current stock, regional pricing and the return policy.
Secure setup and NVR testing
- Install the camera on a trusted local network and change the default password immediately.
- Record the original firmware before updating; an update can alter discovery, authentication, stream URLs, codecs, events or audio.
- Assign a DHCP reservation or static address and create a separate ONVIF user if the camera supports one.
- Enable ONVIF and RTSP only when required, then test the camera locally before adding it to the recorder.
- On the recorder’s camera-add screen, choose ONVIF discovery or manual setup, enter the local IP and ONVIF credentials, select a media profile and confirm live video.
- Test recording, playback, motion events, audio, the physical button and two-way talk separately.
- Reboot the camera, reboot the recorder and confirm recording resumes. Repeat the checks after firmware updates.
- Restrict inbound Internet access. Use a VPN or secure gateway for remote access rather than exposing ONVIF or RTSP directly.
If discovery or events fail
ONVIF discovery fails
- Confirm camera and recorder VLANs can route to each other and that multicast discovery is not blocked.
- Add the camera manually by IP.
- Enable ONVIF and create a dedicated ONVIF account.
- Check profile and firmware compatibility, firewall rules and whether a hub is required.
- Test RTSP independently, reboot both devices and reset only after documenting settings.
Video works but events or audio do not
This is commonly an interoperability limitation, not a failed camera. Test native ONVIF motion events, vendor-specific APIs, RTSP recording with motion detection performed by the VMS, and any Home Assistant or MQTT integration. The physical button may remain proprietary to the vendor app. A separate smart button, contact sensor or wired relay can provide a more dependable automation trigger.
Battery models and hubs
Battery doorbells are a poor default for continuous ONVIF recording. Reolink’s compatibility table states that battery models, including its battery doorbell, require a compatible Reolink Home Hub for certain CGI, RTSP or ONVIF functions. Determine whether the hub exposes the camera or only a relay endpoint, whether a stream stays available, whether continuous recording is supported, and how quickly the camera wakes. For reliable 24/7 recording, choose a wired model unless the hub-dependent design has been specifically tested.
When a separate camera and doorbell is better
Serious self-hosters may get a more reliable system by installing a small ONVIF camera for continuous video and using an independent wired doorbell, smart button or contact sensor for the press event. This separates the recorder’s video path from the automation path, avoids assuming that ONVIF carries button events, and lets you replace either component independently. It does require extra wiring, mounting and integrations, so an all-in-one doorbell remains simpler when its tested feature set is sufficient.
