Indoor alternatives: MSI and Nicholas Conservatory
At the Museum of Science and Industry, Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light provides an indoor, museum-based visit. Enjoy Illinois listed the 2025–26 season from Nov. 8, 2025, through Jan. 5, 2026. In Rockford, Nicholas Conservatory’s holiday display uses illuminated trees and shrubs, glowing stars, candy canes and other seasonal details for a shorter indoor outing.

Chicago civic lights and suburban add-ons
Choose Chicago highlights the city Christmas tree in Millennium Park. WTTW’s 2025 guide also lists Light of Christmas at Rate Field and Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo on selected dates through Jan. 4. These work well when you want public Chicago scenery or a second stop rather than a single-ticket destination.
Indianapolis and northern Indiana: drive-through routes
Shipshewana Lights of Joy
Visit Indiana lists a 1.5-mile route synchronized to Christmas music, with more than two million lights. The 2025 listing ran Nov. 14–Dec. 31 and noted holiday closures, so check the exact night before making the drive. It is a practical choice for families who prefer to remain in their car.

Michigan City Festival of Lights

The 2025 guide listed the display from Dec. 6 through Jan. 3, with lights running every evening.
Neither attraction is in Indianapolis proper. Treat Indianapolis as a broader trip-planning hub and calculate the separate drive to northern Indiana before combining stops.

In St. Croix Falls, Miracle at Big Rock advertises more than 25 million lights. Axios Twin Cities described it as the biggest paid show in its regional comparison published Dec. 18, 2024. Use that figure as an advertised total, not a standardized audit, and expect a destination-scale outing rather than a quick neighborhood stop.
