Paneling is available in wood, MDF, hardboard, PVC, LVT, reclaimed wood, veneer, brick-look, faux-stone, 3D and felt-backed slat systems. Compare the following factors before choosing a design.
| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Visual direction and scale | Vertical layouts emphasize height; horizontal layouts widen; grids add depth. Use restrained scale in small rooms and larger relief or spacing in generous rooms. |
| Moisture exposure | Bathrooms, showers and utility areas require products explicitly rated for the conditions. Decorative appearance alone does not make a panel waterproof. |
| Cleaning | Busy hallways and kitchens need a finish that tolerates routine wiping. Avoid abrasive or solvent cleaners on finished surfaces, as DecorLane advises. |
| Movement and substrate | Timber and sheet goods can move with humidity. Sound, dry, clean, smooth and flat walls reduce joint and alignment problems. |
| Fire and heat | Fireplace surrounds and panels near appliances must meet the product, appliance and local code requirements. |
| Installation complexity | Simple battens and moulding are accessible DIY projects; wet-zone systems, heavy faux stone and complex wrapped ceilings demand careful detailing and may warrant a professional. |
| Maintenance and budget | Factor in trims, adhesive, primer, paint, sealants, waste and replacement difficulty—not just the panel price. |
Prepare the wall properly
MAPEI’s interior wall-paneling guidance states that substrates must be structurally sound, dry, solid, stable, clean, smooth and flat. Its stated tolerance is no more than 1/8 inch (3 mm) variation over 8 feet (2.44 m). Repair movement, dampness, loose paint and major hollows before setting out the panels.
DIY tools and installation sequence
Home Depot’s typical tool list includes a tape measure, level, pencil or chalk line, saw, adhesive, caulk gun, hammer and nails. A stud finder, jigsaw, finish nailer and filler are useful additions depending on the system.
- Measure and plan. Draw the wall elevation, locate studs, mark outlets and decide where seams, corners and trim will land.
- Set level and plumb guides. Use a level and chalk line rather than trusting the floor or ceiling, especially in older homes.
- Condition and cut the panels. Follow the manufacturer’s acclimation guidance where applicable, then cut openings and panel lengths accurately.
- Apply adhesive and mechanical fixings. Use the specified adhesive, press panels into position and add finish nails at studs or approved framing points where required.
- Finish the joints. Fit trims, fill nail holes, caulk appropriate gaps and remove squeeze-out before it cures.
- Inspect before decorating. Check alignment, corners, transitions and service openings before applying paint or sealant.
Painting and finishing paneling
For paintable panels, Dulux recommends cleaning first, filling cracks or grooves, lightly sanding, priming and then applying thin, even coats. Allow the first coat to dry for the time specified by the coating manufacturer before recoating. Seal exposed MDF or timber edges as directed by the panel maker.
Quick Recap
When paneling makes a small room look bigger
- Choose vertical lines when ceiling height is the priority.
- Choose horizontal boards when the room or hallway feels narrow.
- Use a restrained pattern scale; oversized relief can make a small room feel busier.
- Keep trim and panel colour related to reduce visual breaks.
- Use reflective or pale finishes when increasing apparent brightness matters more than drama.
