1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPhoton Matrix is a real product moving from crowdfunding into early commercial production, but its headline results remain company claims. Photon Matrix Lab says the portable device uses LiDAR to detect flying mosquitoes and a separate laser to intercept them. The original campaign advertised a 3-meter radius for Basic and 6 meters (19.7 feet) for Pro, plus “up to 30 mosquitoes per second.” No independent testing in the available evidence confirms those figures, the current retail hardware, or its safety in an occupied outdoor space.
What Photon Matrix is
Photon Matrix Lab, associated with creator Jim Wong in Changzhou, China, positions Photon Matrix as a portable “mosquito air defense” system rather than a UV trap, chemical repellent or conventional electric bug zapper. The official store lists two current variants: an infrared-laser model marketed for home use at $1,188 and a blue-laser model marketed for industrial use at $1,288, before checkout-specific charges. See the official store, infrared model and blue-laser model.
“Vaporizing” is a vivid description used in coverage, not a verified standardized process. The evidence establishes a claimed laser-interception system; it does not establish a certified kill mechanism under a published laboratory protocol.
How the LiDAR-guided system is supposed to work
- Scanning: A LiDAR sensor scans the nearby air for small moving objects.
- Measurement and classification: Software estimates an object’s position, movement and characteristics, then attempts to classify it as a mosquito.
- Aiming: A galvanometer-controlled laser is directed toward the calculated target position.
- Interception: The company says the laser applies enough energy to disable or kill the insect.
Tom’s Guide describes one laser as the sensing element and a second as the targeting element. LiDAR itself does not “guide” a beam like an autonomous-driving system; software must convert sensor measurements into aiming commands. The current manual and firmware would determine how that loop behaves in the shipping product.

What a “6-meter kill zone” does—and does not—mean
The 6-meter figure is an advertised maximum radius for the historical Pro version, equal to about 19.7 feet. The historical Basic claim was 3 meters, or about 9.8 feet. A 6-meter radius has a geometric area of roughly 113 square meters (1,217 square feet), but that calculation is not a measured usable coverage figure.
Do not read “kill zone” as a guaranteed sphere in which every mosquito is found and destroyed. Practical performance would depend on:
- Unbroken line of sight and the insect’s flight path.
- Placement height and orientation.
- Tent mesh, foliage, furniture, people and other obstructions.
- Wind, turbulence, rain, fog, dust, condensation and lighting.
- Reflective surfaces that could affect ranging or beam direction.
- Detection errors, false positives and multiple insects arriving together.
The campaign’s “up to 30 mosquitoes per second” is likewise a best-case ceiling attributed to the campaign, not a household expectation. The available evidence does not resolve whether that number means confirmed kills, target detections or a theoretical rate under controlled conditions. There is no independent sustained outdoor kill-rate or peer-reviewed validation in the sources reviewed. Tom’s Guide and the Indiegogo campaign are the sources for these original claims.

From crowdfunding prototype to early production
Photon Matrix began as an Indiegogo project. In 2026 updates, the company said mass production and shipping were planned for summer, while its FAQ said approximately 4,500 orders were queued as of June and that new orders were expected to ship around August 2026. Tom’s Hardware reported in August 2026 that production had begun and the device was available to buy.

Laser safety is the central buying question
A directed laser capable of damaging an insect deserves a higher safety standard than an LED device or passive trap. Before operating one around a patio, workshop or construction site, obtain documentation for the exact retail model.

- Enhanced LED Attraction: This Bug Zapper is equipped with dual-color LED lights emitting both 365nm and 395nm wavelengths. The dual-color LED system increases insect attraction by 30%, making it especially effective in low-light or nocturnal environments.
- High-Efficiency Instant Electric Shock Tech: Experience enhanced efficiency with our upgraded electric grid, capable of delivering a powerful electric shock in just 0.01 seconds. This quick action swiftly immobilizes and eliminates a variety of insects, including mosquitoes, flies, moths, fruit flies, and culex, ensuring these pesky flyers have no chance to escape.
- Long-Lasting & Cost-Saving: No need for frequent bulb replacements. The durable UV-LED tubes feature a 25,000~50,000 hours lifespan—10 times longer than traditional glass tubes—providing a long-lasting solution that saves maintenance time and costs. (Bulbs are replaceable.)
- Wide Coverage for Outdoor & Indoor: Including a 1.7m/5.6ft cord, it can protect up to 1/2 acre for outdoor or 2,100 sq. ft. area for indoor, which makes the insect killer ideal for outdoor and indoor use. Great for gardens, backyards, patios, balconies, garages, and homes.
- User-Friendly & Safe: This outdoor mosquito killer has a safely protective grid. It is equipped with a dead insect collection tray at the bottom and a cleaning brush for user convenience.
- Ask for the laser class and a verifiable certificate. One Photon Matrix site says IEC 60825-1 Class 4 compliance is “in progress”; that is not confirmation of certification.
- Confirm whether human, child, pet and bird detection is documented, and what happens when someone enters the active zone.
- Ask about physical interlocks, key switches, emergency shutoff, software lockouts and setup or maintenance procedures.
- Assess reflective metal, glass, wet surfaces and other materials that could redirect a beam.
- Check whether CE, FCC, FDA or IEC processes are completed for the precise model, rather than merely planned.
- Follow the manual, labels and local law; the terms of service provide that baseline warning but are not independent proof of household safety.
Do not allow children or animals into an active area until these controls are documented. Marketing videos are not a substitute for a safety file.
What happens to bees, moths and other insects?
LiDAR can provide more information than a simple light trap, but it does not automatically make the system species-selective. A small flying object could be a gnat, fly, moth or another insect. No independent false-positive rate or ecological impact study was found for bees, butterflies, moths or other non-target insects. Treat selectivity as an unresolved product claim, not an established benefit.
Runtime, portability and installation questions
2025 coverage reported operation from a smartphone power bank for up to 16 hours and use in darkness. Those figures are not established for every current infrared or blue-laser configuration. Before buying, verify the required voltage and wattage, compatible power-bank capacity, cable length, weather resistance, operating temperature, continuous versus intermittent duty cycle, included battery and mounting method. Confirm whether a rotating base, extension cable, adapter or weatherproof enclosure is included; the terms mention such accessories but do not establish the package contents for each model.

Can it prevent bites or mosquito-borne disease?
Killing some mosquitoes near a seat could reduce nuisance exposure, but one unit cannot guarantee a bite-free space. Mosquitoes may approach from outside the claimed radius, through blocked sight lines or during periods when the device misses targets. No source establishes reduced malaria, dengue, West Nile or Zika risk, or equivalence to repellents, screens, bed nets or standing-water control. In disease-risk areas, continue using locally recommended personal protection.
Who might consider it—and who should skip it?
Possible use cases
- A fixed patio or tent where a controlled, unobstructed zone can be maintained.
- Hospitality or outdoor venues willing to evaluate early technology and document performance.
- Users seeking a chemical-free experiment and prepared to manage laser controls.
Reasons to wait or choose another method
- You need immediate, proven protection or whole-yard coverage.
- Your budget is closer to the historical $498–$698 campaign figures than today’s four-figure retail price.
- Children, pets, birds, reflective surfaces or uncontrolled foot traffic make a laser-safe zone impractical.
- You require documented disease-prevention effectiveness, weatherproofing or independent testing.
Established alternatives
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bed nets and screened enclosures | Reliable physical exclusion for beds, tents and screened rooms | Protect a defined space rather than an open yard |
| EPA-registered topical or clothing repellents | Hiking, travel and high-exposure situations | Require correct, repeated application |
| Thermacell area repellents | Localized seating areas where cartridges are acceptable | Uses replaceable repellent cartridges; see Thermacell |
| DynaTrap and similar UV/electrical traps | Stationary conventional trapping | Can attract and kill a broad range of insects; see DynaTrap |
| Fans and screens | Immediate airflow or physical barriers around a seat or opening | Limited to the protected position |
| Standing-water removal and larval control | Reducing breeding sites around a property | Does not provide instant personal protection |
Buying checklist
- Use the official store or the official Indiegogo campaign; the company has warned about counterfeit channels.
- Confirm whether the listing is in stock, queued or preorder, and get delivery and refund terms in writing.
- Request model-specific laser classification, certification records and safety controls.
- Ask for independent data: sustained outdoor kill rate, false positives, target-size range and weather limits.
- Verify power, accessories, mounting, warranty, support location and regional compliance.
- Plan a controlled placement with clear sight lines; never infer outdoor suitability from promotional imagery alone.
Verdict
Photon Matrix appears to be a genuine commercial product built around a technically plausible idea. Its advertised 6-meter radius, “up to 30 mosquitoes per second” rate and safety assurances remain unproven by independent evidence. At $1,188–$1,288, it is an early-adopter experiment for a carefully controlled space—not an obvious replacement for nets, repellents, screens or source control.
