Use the ideas below as a menu rather than a checklist. A shallow, greasy gap may need one easy-clean treatment; a deep, accessible space can support storage or a curated collection.
First decide what the gap needs to do

Before buying anything, measure the opening’s height, depth and width, note nearby heat-producing appliances, and decide whether you can safely reach the area without standing on a countertop.

1. Line up decorative baskets
Coordinated woven baskets turn a difficult-to-style ledge into concealed storage for seasonal linens, rarely used serving pieces or entertaining supplies. Choose matching or related shapes, keep labels or lids facing the same direction, and leave enough room to remove each basket without scraping the ceiling. 2. Lean one large artwork
A single substantial, lightweight print usually looks more intentional than a scatter of tiny objects. Lean it against the wall only when the ledge is stable and the frame cannot slide; otherwise use appropriate anti-tip hardware. Repeat a color already present in the backsplash, island or textiles so the artwork connects the kitchen rather than competing with it.
3. Build a mini gallery wall

5. Install statement sconces
A pair—or one carefully centered—of decorative sconces can make the gap read as a designed focal point. This is an electrical installation: confirm wiring routes, mounting surfaces, switch control and required clearances with a qualified electrician. Choose fixtures with finishes that can be wiped clean and keep them away from steam, splashing and combustible décor.

6. Hide LED accent lighting

8. Display attractive cookware
Clean copper pots, pans or serving pieces can make useful equipment part of the décor. Display only items you can reach safely and remove for regular washing; grease quickly dulls porous or highly detailed surfaces. A short rail, robust shelf or purpose-built rack is safer than balancing heavy cookware on a narrow cabinet top.
9. Layer cutting boards vertically

11. Use faux or dried greenery
Artificial stems or properly dried branches add height and softness with little watering. Choose realistic, dustable materials and a weighted container. Keep all dried or synthetic greenery well away from burners, heat vents and hot appliance surfaces because both can be combustible or heat-sensitive.
12. Add a suitable trailing plant
A trailing houseplant can soften a hard cabinet line, but only if the location provides appropriate light and the plant can be watered without spilling onto cabinetry or appliances. Use a stable, leak-resistant pot with a saucer or secondary container, verify the cabinet can carry its weight, and select a species suited to the actual light level. If safe watering is awkward, choose faux greenery instead.
13. Paint a color-blocked wall
Painting the strip above the cabinets makes the gap read as a deliberate band of architecture. Relate the color to the backsplash, island, cabinet hardware or adjacent wall rather than introducing an unrelated accent. Prepare the surface for grease, mask cabinet edges carefully and use a finish that can be wiped without burnishing.

14. Apply peel-and-stick wallpaper
Removable wallpaper offers renters and short-term renovators a reversible backdrop. Measure every section, plan seams around corners and outlets, clean and dry the surface, and test adhesion in an inconspicuous spot before covering the full run. Steam, grease and textured walls can shorten its life, so choose a washable product and keep it away from intense heat.
15. Add shiplap or beadboard
Shiplap or beadboard gives the gap architectural texture when it suits the home’s style. Install a properly supported panel system, finish edges so grease cannot collect in raw joints, and maintain access to wiring or ventilation. Moisture-resistant material and a washable coating are preferable in kitchens.
16. Build a shallow shelf or cubby
A shallow open shelf converts leftover height into intentional display and light storage. Design its depth around the objects you will use, verify wall and cabinet support, and protect the shelf from steam and grease. A trim detail or matching finish can make the addition look like part of the cabinetry rather than an afterthought.
17. Rotate a small seasonal display
Seasonal rotation keeps the area fresh without creating permanent accumulation. Change a few lightweight objects for holidays or the seasons, store the off-season pieces in labeled containers, and keep the composition consistent in scale. A rotation is only useful if every item can be removed and cleaned safely.
18. Close the gap with a faux cabinet extension
When you want a seamless built-in appearance, fill the void with crown molding, a stacked cabinet, a framed enclosure or another designed extension. This can eliminate a dust shelf and increase visual height, but it is a construction decision: confirm ceiling irregularities, ventilation, appliance clearances, access to services and the cabinetry’s load path before work begins. Matching doors, panels and trim usually produce the most convincing result.
19. Leave it empty
An empty, clean line is a valid design choice. It is often the most practical answer for a shallow or hard-to-reach gap, a location close to cooking grease, or a kitchen that already has a busy backsplash and open shelving. Clean the cabinet tops and wall, then let the architecture provide the finish instead of adding objects that become maintenance.
