Yes—most automatic driveway gates can be triggered by a relay, but the relay should imitate the operator’s wired push button, not power or switch the gate motor. Use an electrically isolated, normally open dry contact connected to the operator’s documented command input, configure a short momentary pulse, and leave every photo eye, sensing edge, limit switch, emergency release and manual control in service.

What the relay actually controls

The gate operator is the device that controls motor current, direction, limits, braking and safety logic. A smart relay merely closes an input circuit so the operator interprets the event as a button press or access-control request.

Do not connect a small relay to the motor leads, battery, actuator output or other high-current circuit. A relay output that supplies voltage (a “wet” contact) can damage an input that expects a voltage-free contact. A dry contact is an electrically isolated switch; it does not put the relay’s supply voltage onto the gate input. The operator’s wiring diagram remains the authority for the particular model.

Manufacturers use different labels and terminal arrangements. ProdataKey’s isolation-relay guidance, for example, shows an access controller driving an operator’s EXIT input through an isolation relay (ProdataKey guidance). Shelly’s gate example likewise uses dry contacts across the operator’s trigger input (Shelly Plus 1 gate-control guide).

Identify the operator before touching a wire

Record the manufacturer, exact model and revision, swing or slide configuration, supply voltage, terminal labels and available accessory outputs. Download the installation manual for that exact unit; do not copy terminal numbers from another model or production revision. LiftMaster publishes model-specific wiring information for operators such as the RSL12UL and LA500UL (RSL12UL documentation; LA500UL documentation).

  • Determine whether the board has START, STEP, RADIO, EXIT, OPEN, CLOSE or STOP inputs, and which terminal is the associated common.
  • Find out whether a single pulse cycles the gate or whether open and close are separate commands.
  • Check whether the input is dry-contact compatible and whether the board provides suitable accessory power.
  • Look for manufacturer-provided open/closed outputs, limit-switch contacts or a sensor connection.
  • Check for proprietary, encrypted or non-contact controls that cannot be replaced by a simple relay.

Choose the correct command input

Single-step or trigger input

START, STEP-BY-STEP, RADIO, EXIT and similar terminals commonly accept one brief closure. The operator decides whether that event means open, stop, close or reverse. This is normally the safest and simplest arrangement because the operator retains its own direction and limit logic.

Separate OPEN and CLOSE inputs

Some boards document independent directional commands. Two relays may then be appropriate, but only when the manual explicitly permits it. Interlock the outputs so OPEN and CLOSE can never be asserted together, define pulse lengths, and account for stop inputs, auto-close timers, limit switches, reversing logic and communications failures. Do not assume that labels reading “open” and “close” mean two relays are required.

Momentary versus maintained operation

Most push-button inputs require a pulse, often about 0.5–2 seconds, rather than a contact held closed. Configure the smart relay’s button, inching or auto-off mode. A latched relay on a pulse input can cause repeated cycling, prevent a stop command, or leave the operator in an unexpected state. A maintained-contact or safety input is different; follow the operator’s specified timing and contact state.

Generic one-relay wiring

After identifying a documented dry-contact command input, the usual arrangement is:

Gate controller COM ───── Relay COM
Gate controller START/OPEN ─── Relay NO
Relay NC ───── Not normally used

Connect COM and NO in parallel with the existing wall station, keypad or receiver contacts so those controls continue to work. Use NC only when the operator manual specifically requires a normally closed circuit; an incorrectly used NC contact can create a permanent command or interfere with supervision. Never bridge unknown terminals. If the manufacturer permits a test bridge, briefly bridge only the two documented command terminals with the operator’s power and testing procedure.

Power the relay without damaging the operator

The relay’s contact circuit and its power supply are separate design questions. Possible supplies include the operator’s low-voltage accessory output, a separate listed low-voltage DC supply, a supported AC supply, or a solar/battery system designed for the installation.

  • Match AC or DC type, nominal voltage, allowable range and polarity.
  • Confirm that the accessory output has enough current after existing sensors, receivers and other accessories are counted.
  • Use an outdoor-rated enclosure, cable glands and wiring suitable for temperature, moisture and ultraviolet exposure.
  • Keep mains wiring physically separated and have a qualified electrician perform mains-voltage work.

Shelly’s gate documentation describes a 24 V DC supply with dry contacts and a reed switch for position feedback (Shelly Plus 1 guide). That does not make every Shelly model a 24 V device. For example, Shelly 1 Mini Gen 4 has dry output contacts but requires 120 V AC power (Shelly 1 Mini Gen 4 documentation). Verify the exact model before connecting anything.

Installation procedure

  1. Photograph existing wiring and label every conductor.
  2. Put the gate in a safe position, keep people and vehicles clear, and disconnect power according to the operator manual.
  3. Read the exact model’s wiring diagram and identify the approved command input and common.
  4. Confirm that the relay provides an isolated dry contact and that its contact rating suits the input.
  5. Install the relay and its power supply in a suitable enclosure; observe polarity and current limits.
  6. Wire relay COM and NO across the documented command terminals, leaving existing controls and safety devices connected.
  7. Set the relay to momentary operation with the manufacturer’s recommended pulse or a conservative short pulse.
  8. Restore power and test with the gate visible from the operating position.
  9. Test photo eyes, sensing edges, obstruction response, manual release, emergency access and loss-of-power behavior.
  10. Only after local testing succeeds should you enable remote access or automated routines.

One relay or two?

Design Use it when Main cautions
One dry-contact relay The operator has START, STEP, EXIT, RADIO or another single trigger; the normal remote uses one button. The pulse may mean open, stop, close or reverse depending on the operator’s state.
Two interlocked relays The manual explicitly documents separate OPEN and CLOSE inputs. Prevent simultaneous commands; define stop behavior, pulse timing, auto-close and power/network recovery.
Dedicated controller or interface The input is proprietary, supervised, encrypted or otherwise not a simple contact. Use the manufacturer’s accessory or a qualified installer rather than guessing at terminals.

If a documented single-step input exists, it is generally preferable to independent directional relays because the operator preserves its own safety and sequencing logic.

Control is not gate status

A relay can issue a command without knowing whether the gate is fully open, fully closed, moving, stopped halfway, obstructed, manually released or without power. A timer such as “closed 30 seconds after opening” is only an estimate.

  • Magnetic reed switch: provides a simple physical open/closed indication; mount and align it so vibration or a partly open gate cannot produce a false state.
  • Operator outputs or limit feedback: use these when the manufacturer exposes supervised or position contacts.
  • Position sensor or access-control feedback: useful where intermediate and fault states matter.
  • Camera verification: a secondary check, not a substitute for safety sensors or a proper position input.

Shelly’s documented gate arrangement uses a reed switch for feedback (Shelly Plus 1 guide); iSmartGate also offers wired and wireless sensors (iSmartGate store).

Configure remote control conservatively

  • Use a momentary pulse, not a latched output, unless the operator explicitly requires maintained contact.
  • Keep a physical wall station, keypad, radio remote or other local control available.
  • Require authentication for remote commands and restrict automatic schedules to defined conditions.
  • Do not create an unattended close routine unless entrapment protection is installed, tested and appropriate for the site.
  • Define what happens when the internet, Wi-Fi, automation server, relay power or operator power fails; these are separate failure modes.
  • After reboot, ensure the relay does not restore a closed contact or issue an unintended pulse.

Safety, code and emergency access

Never bypass or defeat photoelectric sensors, sensing edges, monitored stops or other entrapment-protection equipment. LiftMaster warns that safety accessories and UL 325 requirements are integral to preventing injury; its materials explain that sensors stop closing when an obstruction is detected (LiftMaster safety information). A smart relay does not make an unsafe gate safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep people, animals and vehicles out of the opening during testing and remote operation.
  • Preserve the manual release and firefighter or emergency-access function.
  • Do not rely on an app, camera or timer as the sole safety system.
  • Use weatherproof enclosures and follow local electrical and building codes.
  • Use a gate technician or electrician for mains work, commercial or shared property, heavy or high-speed gates, or any installation with uncertain wiring.

Test the completed installation

  1. Operate the original wall station, keypad, remote and manual controls.
  2. Trigger the relay locally and confirm that only the intended operator input responds.
  3. Verify that the relay releases after the configured pulse.
  4. Test the approved obstruction procedure and each photo eye and sensing edge.
  5. Test from fully open, fully closed and partly open positions.
  6. Disable network access and confirm local controls still work.
  7. Cycle power to the relay and operator; observe behavior after a power failure.
  8. Operate the manual release and emergency-access function.
  9. Confirm OPEN and CLOSE cannot be commanded simultaneously.
  10. Compare the status sensor with the physical gate position, including a stopped or manually moved gate.
  11. Label the modified wiring inside the enclosure and record the relay model and settings.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely causes and remedy
Relay clicks but the gate does nothing Wrong terminals, omitted common, unsuitable wet output, wrong pulse length, safety lockout, manual-release mode or proprietary interface. Verify the exact diagram and test only the documented input.
Gate repeatedly opens, stops or closes Relay is maintained instead of momentary, pulse is excessive, a step input is being retriggered, contacts are stuck or another automation rule is issuing commands.
App reports the wrong state Status is inferred from relay activity, a reed switch is misaligned, the gate stopped midway, it was moved manually or a controller lost power. Add physical feedback and an explicit unknown state.
Remote works but local controls fail Relay was placed in series, NC was misused, accessory power is overloaded or the wrong safety/stop circuit was used. Restore parallel wiring and the documented common.
Control board was damaged Voltage was injected into a dry input, ratings were exceeded, power and contact terminals were confused, polarity was reversed or a surge occurred. Replace damaged hardware and use an isolated interposing relay where specified.

Choose the right type of equipment

Option Best fit Trade-offs
Generic smart dry-contact relay Documented low-voltage input, DIY user, existing gate safety system and a need for local automation. Requires correct power, enclosure, wiring and separate status sensing. Shelly Plus 1 UL-Certified was listed at $21.49 for one unit on the U.S. site on August 16, 2026; price and availability change (product page).
Shelly 1 Gen4 Users needing its listed Wi-Fi, Matter and Zigbee support with a compatible dry-contact input. Protocol support does not establish gate compatibility. The listed U.S. price was $19.60 on August 16, 2026 (product page).
Dedicated smart gate controller Supported app workflow, notifications, users and position sensing. Costs more and may depend on vendor services. iSmartGate offers MINI, LITE and PRO products and accessories (comparison); Remootio listed packages beginning at $129 when reviewed (Remootio).
Commercial access-control panel Multiple residents or employees, credentials, schedules, audit logs, intercoms or fire-access integration. Requires professional design, administration, supervised inputs and often backup power; obtain a vendor quote.

When a relay is the wrong choice

  • The operator has no documented external command input.
  • The proposed wiring would switch motor current or battery power.
  • The only available command is encrypted or proprietary radio.
  • The relay cannot be powered within its voltage, current and environmental specifications.
  • Entrapment protection is missing, defective or bypassed.
  • The installation exposes outdoor mains wiring without qualified work.
  • You need dependable position control, managed credentials, audit logs or shared-site administration.

In those cases, use a manufacturer-specific receiver, a dedicated smart gate controller or a professionally installed access-control system.

Final pre-power checklist

  • Exact operator model and revision documented.
  • Correct command input and common confirmed from its manual.
  • Relay output is isolated, dry contact, normally open and correctly rated.
  • Power voltage, polarity, current budget and enclosure verified.
  • Existing controls, photo eyes, edges, limits and emergency release remain connected.
  • Pulse timing and offline behavior configured.
  • Physical status sensor installed if reliable state matters.
  • Local, obstruction, power-failure and emergency tests passed before remote automation is enabled.
