How Do I Convert a Normally Open Switch to Normally Closed?

A two-terminal normally open switch cannot usually be rewired as normally closed. Here is how to identify an SPDT switch, wire COM to NC, choose a replacement, or safely invert the signal with a relay.

Usually, you cannot convert a simple two-terminal normally open (NO) switch into a true normally closed (NC) switch. An NO switch is manufactured to be open at rest and closed when actuated. If the device has a COM and NC terminal, move the circuit wire to NC. Otherwise, replace the switch with an NC or SPDT switch, or use a correctly rated SPDT relay when you only need to invert an electrical signal.

Do not use a relay inversion as a substitute for the specified safety device in an emergency-stop, guard, brake, hoist, burner, lift, medical, alarm or mains-safety circuit.

What “normally open” and “normally closed” mean

“Normally” describes the contact state when the device is in its resting condition: a pushbutton is not pressed, a limit switch is not actuated, or a relay coil is de-energized. An NO contact is open in that state and closes when actuated. An NC contact is closed at rest and opens when actuated. The terms describe the contact, not whether your load is intended to be on or off. See Schneider Electric’s contact definitions at https://www.se.com/us/en/faqs/FA238772/.

First decide which result you actually need:

  • A physical switch that is closed when untouched and opens when pressed.
  • An inverted electrical signal for a controller or input.
  • A relay output that uses its NC contact.
  • A safety circuit that must detect a broken wire or disconnected device.

A relay, transistor or software inverter can change a signal’s logic, but it does not turn the original NO switch into a mechanically fail-safe NC component.

Identify the switch before changing anything

Switch type Typical terminals Can it provide NC directly?
SPST-NO Two terminals No
SPST-NC Two terminals Yes
SPDT/changeover COM, NO, NC Yes
DPDT Two independent changeover sections Yes, for two circuits
Modular industrial contact block Depends on catalog number Sometimes replaceable or convertible

Some switch inserts are designed to be wired as NO, NC or changeover; the manufacturer’s terminal layout still governs. One example is documented by Busch-Jaeger at https://www.busch-jaeger.de/en/online-catalogue/detail/2CKA001413A0517. Schneider also publishes terminal-identification information for specific snap switches at https://www.se.com/us/en/faqs/FA113322/.

If the switch has COM, NO and NC

An SPDT (single-pole, double-throw) switch already contains both contact choices:

At rest: COM ─── NC COM NO (open)
When pressed: COM NC (open) COM ─── NO
  1. Turn off and isolate all power.
  2. Read the markings on the actual switch. Do not assume another device uses the same terminal order.
  3. Connect one circuit wire to COM and the other to NC.
  4. Leave NO unused unless the circuit also needs the opposite output.
  5. With the load disconnected or at low energy, verify that the circuit is closed at rest and opens when the switch is actuated.

Never connect COM and NO together. If the markings are unclear, test continuity with the circuit disconnected: at rest, COM–NC should conduct and COM–NO should be open; when actuated, those readings should reverse.

If the existing switch has only two NO terminals

There is no hidden third contact to expose. Reversing the two wires changes polarity only in circuits where polarity matters; it does not change an open contact into a closed one. A permanent jumper bypasses the switch and leaves the circuit continuously closed.

Replace it with an NC switch

For a simple installation, replacement is normally the most reliable solution. Select a device with the same mounting dimensions and actuator style, then match all of these requirements:

  • SPST-NC or SPDT contact arrangement.
  • Momentary or maintained operation.
  • Pushbutton, push-to-break, limit, toggle, pedal, reed or pressure actuation as required.
  • Voltage, continuous current and inrush ratings for the actual load.
  • AC or DC rating, environmental sealing and temperature range.
  • Terminal style and required mechanical life.

Use an SPDT replacement for flexibility

An SPDT switch lets you choose either behavior later by selecting COM–NC or COM–NO. It is often the best general-purpose replacement when the hardware can accommodate it.

Check for a manufacturer-approved conversion

Some industrial contact assemblies use field-convertible cartridges, but this is product-specific. Schneider documents conversion procedures for particular 8501 families at https://www.se.com/us/en/faqs/FA126263/, https://www.se.com/no/no/faqs/FA111333/ and https://productinfo.se.com/8501ct9601icr/8501ct9601-industrial-control-relays/English/8501CT9601%20%28bookmap%29_0000834310.xml/%24/GeneralInformation-37F5B152. Do not generalize that procedure to unrelated switches or relays.

Invert the signal with an SPDT relay

Use a relay when the original switch must remain NO but the downstream circuit needs the opposite electrical state, or when control and load circuits need isolation. The relay must have an SPDT (also called 1 Form C) contact set with COM, NO and NC.

Protect the coil and driver

For a DC coil, use the suppression specified by the relay or module, commonly a flyback diode, resistor or integrated suppressor. A diode-equipped relay has polarity requirements. AC coils require a different suppression method. Do not choose a diode value without knowing the coil voltage, coil current, switching speed and driving circuit.

Verify relay suitability

  • Coil voltage and AC/DC type.
  • Coil current or resistance and whether continuous energization is permitted.
  • Internal diode, resistor or other suppression.
  • Contact voltage and current ratings for the actual load.
  • Separate AC and DC ratings, plus motor, solenoid, lamp and other inrush ratings.
  • Switching frequency, service life, enclosure, insulation, creepage and clearance.
  • What the load should do when the coil loses power.

An example listing for a sealed 12-VDC, 40-A SPDT automotive relay specifies a 133.3 mA coil; those figures apply to that product, not to every “12-V relay.” See https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cit-relay-and-switch/A2M1CSQ12VDC1-6D/12502725. Terminal numbers such as automotive 85, 86, 30, 87 and 87a are conventions, not a substitute for the relay’s own diagram.

When a relay is the wrong answer

Many electronic inputs use a pull-up or pull-down resistor and can be inverted in software or with a transistor or logic gate. This is usually smaller and more efficient than keeping a relay energized, but the input voltage, current, default state and failure behavior must be designed deliberately.

A standard relay is also not automatically fail-safe. If its coil must remain energized to keep an NC contact open, a broken control wire or lost supply can de-energize the coil and close that contact. Conversely, if the load is wired through NC, loss of relay power may turn the load on rather than off.

Safety circuits often use NC wiring so a cut wire, unplugged switch or released emergency stop appears as a fault. Safety relays add monitoring and contact-welding detection; an ordinary relay is not equivalent. Omron’s safety guidance is available at https://www.ia.omron.com/data_pdf/guide/4/safetycompo_tg_e_2_1.pdf.

Troubleshooting after the change

The load is always on

  • Confirm that the load is connected to relay COM–NC, not COM–NO.
  • Check whether the relay coil is actually de-energized when the switch is released.
  • Look for a jumper that bypasses the switch or a welded relay contact.

The load is always off

  • Verify coil voltage and polarity where applicable.
  • Check continuity of the replacement switch at rest.
  • Confirm that the relay has an SPDT contact set and that the load supply reaches COM.

The relay chatters or overheats

  • Measure the coil voltage while actuating the switch.
  • Check for an undersized supply, loose terminals or a coil being driven below its rated voltage.
  • Use the specified suppression and ensure the relay is rated for the switching frequency.

A fuse blows or operation reverses after power loss

  • Disconnect power immediately and return to the last known wiring.
  • Inspect for a short between supply and the wrong relay terminal.
  • Re-evaluate whether the requirement is logical inversion or a physical NC device, and define the required power-loss state before rewiring.

Construction, automotive and mains safety

For motors, solenoids, contactors and some lamps, inrush and inductive transients can exceed the apparent running current. Use a relay and suppression rated for that load category. A relay rated for 12-VDC automotive service is not automatically suitable for 120/230-VAC mains, an inductive industrial load or a safety control.

Mains work requires an enclosure, strain relief, insulation, conductor sizing, grounding and overcurrent protection appropriate to the installation. Have a licensed electrician perform work where local rules require it.

Do not modify an emergency stop, machine guard, lift, hoist, brake, burner, gas appliance, medical device, alarm or other protective circuit with a generic relay. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s diagram and the applicable safety standard, using specified safety-rated components and monitoring.

Quick decision guide

  1. Three or more terminals marked COM, NO, NC? Use COM and NC after testing continuity with power removed.
  2. Only two NO terminals? Replace the device with an NC or SPDT model that matches its mechanical and electrical ratings.
  3. Only a low-voltage signal needs inversion? Consider a transistor, logic inverter or software setting instead of a relay.
  4. A separate load circuit must be switched? Use a correctly rated SPDT relay, with coil suppression and verified power-loss behavior.
  5. Safety-critical or mains circuit? Stop and use the specified safety-rated design or a qualified professional.
