How to Check Amps Through a Heater Safely

Use an AC clamp meter around one conductor—not the whole cable—to check heater current. Calculate expected amps from watts ÷ volts, then interpret readings safely for portable, baseboard, water-heater and HVAC systems.

The safest general method is an AC clamp meter. Set it to AC amperage and clamp around one current-carrying conductor only while the heater operates. Do not clamp around the entire cable or cord, and do not place an ordinary multimeter in series with a heater circuit.

What you are measuring

“Amps through a heater” can mean the heater’s operating current, the expected current calculated from its rating, or whether the circuit can support the load. Amperes are instantaneous current; energy use is measured in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours.

Calculate the expected current first

For a mainly resistive heater, use:

Amps = watts ÷ volts

Heater rating Supply voltage Expected current when fully energized
1,500 W 120 V 12.5 A
1,000 W 120 V 8.33 A
2,000 W 240 V 8.33 A
4,500 W 240 V 18.75 A
5,000 W 240 V 20.83 A

These are estimates at the stated voltage with the heating element fully on. Actual voltage, thermostats, staging, fans, relays and electronic controls can change the reading.

Choose the right measuring method

AC clamp meter

A clamp meter measures the magnetic field around a conductor without interrupting the circuit. Choose one with an AC-current clamp, a voltage-category rating suitable for the installation, and a current range above the expected load. True-RMS is useful for heaters with electronic switching or distorted waveforms, but is not normally essential for a simple resistance element. Inrush and min/max functions help with HVAC systems that include motors, relays or staged controls.

Clamp-meter guidance from Fluke explains the one-conductor method and current sensing: how to measure current, why opposing conductors cancel and how clamp meters operate.

Plug-in power meter

For a portable 120-volt heater, a suitably rated plug-in power meter is often easier than accessing wiring. It can report watts, volts and amps at the receptacle. Confirm that its voltage and current ratings exceed the heater’s nameplate values.

What not to use

A non-contact voltage tester only detects the presence of voltage; it does not measure current. Do not connect ordinary multimeter leads across a live source while the meter is set to amps. That can short the supply, blow the meter fuse, damage the meter or create an arc.

Safety before any measurement

  • Read the heater nameplate, wiring diagram and meter instructions.
  • Inspect the meter, jaws, case, battery cover and leads for damage.
  • Use a meter rated for the installation’s voltage category and environment.
  • Remove all test leads from the meter before using its clamp function.
  • Keep fingers behind the meter’s tactile barrier and do not work in wet conditions or around explosive vapors.
  • Do not touch exposed energized conductors.
  • If access requires opening a service panel or disconnect, hire a qualified electrician unless you are trained and equipped for energized work. Fluke’s safety guidance covers CAT ratings, damaged leads and probe barriers: clamp-meter safety tips.

How to measure current with a clamp meter

  1. Turn the heater on. Select the highest heat setting if you need full-load current.
  2. Set the meter to AC amps, usually marked A~ or ACA.
  3. Keep the test leads disconnected from the meter.
  4. Open the jaws and place them around one insulated conductor only.
  5. Close the jaws completely and center the conductor where practical.
  6. Wait for the display to stabilize and record the current.
  7. If the heater has a thermostat or stages, observe a complete cycle and record each operating condition.

Nearby conductors, poor jaw placement and an unclosed jaw can affect accuracy. If no individual conductor is safely accessible, do not cut, strip, separate or modify the cable or cord merely to obtain a reading.

Checking a 120-volt heater

Clamp around the hot conductor, typically the black conductor in correctly wired equipment. Do not clamp around hot and neutral together: their opposing magnetic fields largely cancel and the meter may read nearly zero. A 1,500-watt heater should draw about 12.5 amps at 120 volts while its element is fully energized. A low/high switch should be measured on each setting, and a thermostat may alternate between near-zero and the operating value.

A 12.5-amp portable heater leaves little capacity on a 15-amp branch circuit. Measured current alone does not establish that the breaker, wiring, receptacle and other loads are suitable.

Checking a 240-volt heater

A typical 240-volt heater has two energized legs. Measure one accessible hot conductor at a time. A 4,500-watt heater calculates to 4,500 ÷ 240 = 18.75 amps, so approximately 19 amps on each leg is consistent with a fully energized resistive load at the expected voltage.

Do not clamp around both hot legs for ordinary load-current measurement, and do not add the two leg readings to claim the heater draws 38 amps. Each leg carries the circuit current; the heater’s power is approximately 240 volts multiplied by that current. If the conductors are inside a cable or conduit and cannot be accessed safely, stop rather than dismantling energized wiring.

Electric water heaters

Many 240-volt water heaters energize one element at a time and use thermostats and a high-limit cutoff. Measure a hot leg while an element is actively heating and compare the result with the data plate and wiring diagram. An off element can produce zero or only control current; do not assume both elements operate simultaneously.

HVAC electric heat strips

  1. Call for heat at the thermostat and allow the blower and first stage to engage.
  2. Measure each heating-stage conductor separately.
  3. Wait for additional stages to energize and record their currents.
  4. Compare each value with the unit’s wiring diagram and heat-kit rating.

True-RMS, min/max or inrush functions can help with staged heat, motors and electronic controls. They are not automatically necessary for a basic portable resistance heater.

Multiple heaters on one circuit

For simple resistance loads, estimate combined current by adding wattages and dividing by the circuit voltage. For example, (1,500 W + 1,000 W) ÷ 120 V = 20.83 A. This is a load calculation, not permission to operate that combination. Breaker, conductor, receptacle, disconnect and local-code requirements must be evaluated separately.

Interpret the reading

Close to the calculated value

This usually means the element is energized and operating near its rated load, subject to actual voltage and meter accuracy.

Substantially lower

  • The thermostat or relay is cycling, or only one stage is active.
  • An element is open or disconnected.
  • Supply voltage is lower than expected.
  • The jaws surround the wrong conductor or opposing conductors.
  • The meter is on the wrong function, unsuitable or faulty.
  • Electronic controls are limiting or modulating power.

Substantially higher

  • The nameplate voltage or wattage was misunderstood.
  • Additional loads are on the conductor.
  • Multiple stages or elements are energized.
  • The heater configuration or supply voltage is different from assumed.
  • The meter is being used incorrectly or a fault exists.

Near zero

The heater may be off, satisfied, staged off or measured on the wrong wire. Other possibilities include an open relay, limit switch or element, a meter set to DC amps, unclosed jaws or a malfunctioning meter.

Unequal 240-volt leg readings

A small difference can result from voltage variation, meter accuracy or nonsimultaneous controls. A large difference may indicate staged operation, a disconnected element, failed contactor or wiring trouble; compare it with the equipment diagram.

Watts ≈ volts × amps

For example, 240 volts × 18.8 amps is approximately 4,512 watts. With motors or electronic controls, power factor and waveform effects mean volts multiplied by amps may not equal real watts; use a power meter or analyzer when accurate energy measurement is required.

When to stop and call a professional

  • Live bus bars or exposed conductors would be accessible.
  • Wiring, insulation, plugs, receptacles or disconnects are damaged, discolored or hot.
  • You smell burning, hear arcing or the breaker trips repeatedly.
  • Current is unexpectedly high, unstable or very different from the nameplate value.
  • A 240-volt panel, water heater, heat-strip kit or inaccessible conductor must be opened.
  • You are unsure of the meter rating, wiring identity or safe test procedure.

A normal-looking amperage reading cannot verify grounding, insulation, connections, breaker compatibility or code compliance. An electrician or HVAC technician should inspect those conditions.
