Yes. Fraens’ open design is a manually operated, eight-shaft table loom that uses 3D-printed parts and hand levers to weave drafts with complex lift sequences. The downloadable project includes STL files, an overview drawing and a parts guide. It is best understood as a compact sample and experimentation loom, not a production-width replacement for a full-size floor loom.

What the Fraens loom is

The loom uses eight shafts, each controlled by a lever. Instead of relying on a computerized controller, the weaver follows a draft row by row: thread the warp through the numbered shafts, raise the shafts specified for the current pick, pass the shuttle, and beat the weft with the reed.

That arrangement gives a tabletop loom access to more pattern combinations than a basic rigid-heddle setup while keeping the control method mechanical and visible. Fraens describes the manual version as a deliberately simpler design for experimenting with intricate patterns.

What you download and what you must supply

Fraens’ download contains the printable STL files, an overview drawing in DXF/PDF format and a parts page identifying purchased components. The files are only one part of the build; you still need a suitable 3D printer, hardware, weaving components and yarn.

#1 Best Overall
Ashford Folding Table Loom 8 Harness 24 Inch with Shuttle Race
  • The Ashford 8 harness 24 inch table Loom is popular for its veratility and easy to use. The overhead beater provides a wide weaving shed. Levers are within easy reach for comfortable weaving. Each shaft can be lifted independently enabling a wide variety of patterns to be woven. Durable plastic ratchet brakes allow for easy warp advance. The castle can fold flat, even with your weaving in place.
  • 8 shaft Table Loom, weaving width 24 inches.
  • Shuttle race included. The shuttle race prevents the shuttle from diving between warp ends and falling through the shed.
  • Includes: 10 dpi stainless steel reed, 480 Texsolve heddles, two 22 inch stick shuttles, 5 warp/cross sticks, 10 cardboard warp sticks, 1 nylon double sided reed/heddle hook, and the Learn to Weave on the Table Loom booklet.
  • Made of solid New Zealand Beech hardwood. Lacquered for long lasting good looks. Assemble required.

Printed parts and yarn

  • Filament: PLA is the material documented for the prototype’s printed parts.
  • Warp: One documented implementation uses 1.5 mm cotton warp.
  • Heddles: The prototype guide specifies 3 mm heddle holes.
  • Reed spacing: The same implementation uses 9.4 dents per inch (3.7 dents per centimetre).
  • Weft and shuttle: Choose these to suit the warp, sett and the clearance available in the shed.

The stated yarn and spacing are configuration details, not universal settings. Changing yarn diameter or sett may require a different reed, heddle arrangement or draft planning.

Hardware and tools

Use the parts list and drawings to identify fasteners, shafts, levers, reed components and tensioning hardware for the particular revision you download. Check every purchased part against the current files before printing: a change in revision can alter dimensions or hardware requirements. An Arduino-compatible board and additional electronics are needed only if you build the electronic Dobby version.

How complex patterns are woven

1. Prepare the draft

A draft specifies which shafts lift for each row of the pattern. Fraens recommends the free Quickdraw software for creating or adjusting drafts and previewing the resulting pattern before you thread the loom.

2. Thread the numbered shafts

Route each warp end through the shaft indicated by the draft. Accurate numbering matters: a threading error can make every subsequent lift sequence produce the wrong structure.

Rigid Heddle Loom & Stand Combo (32)
  • Loom and Stand Combo
  • Four weaving widths 16", 24", 32", 48"
  • Quick and easy to warp and weave
  • Includes 7.5 DPI Reed, two natural shuttles, step by step instruction booklet, threading hook, warping peg and clamp
  • Made from natural Silver Beech hardwood

3. Work one pick at a time

  1. Read the next lift row in the draft.
  2. Raise the corresponding shaft levers.
  3. Pass the shuttle through the shed.
  4. Return the levers for the next row.
  5. Beat the inserted weft with the reed.

For a short draft this is a straightforward hand process. As the number of different sequences grows, keeping your place and reproducing the lift order becomes the main challenge.

Manual, mechanical Dobby and Arduino E-Dobby options

Fraens documents two upgrades for weavers who want help managing longer sequences. They change how the pattern is selected; they do not turn the small tabletop loom into a wide production loom.

Configuration How lifts are selected Best fit Published qualification
Manual eight-shaft loom Directly by hand-operated levers Learning, sampling and shorter or manageable drafts Base design; eight shafts
Mechanical Dobby A mechanical, warp-based system marks and recalls lift settings Longer sequences without fully electronic control Fraens states a limitation of approximately 40–50 different settings
Arduino E-Dobby Programmable electronic control Very long or intricate drafts where manual selection is error-prone Requires the compatible E-Dobby design, board and electronics

The mechanical Dobby’s approximately 40–50-setting figure is a stated design limitation, not a measured speed or capacity comparison. If your draft exceeds that practical range, the electronic route is the more appropriate upgrade, provided your board, wiring and printed parts match the chosen design revision.

Build sequence and checks

  1. Confirm the revision: Download the current STL files, drawings and parts information as one set.
  2. Print the PLA components: Inspect holes, lever pivots and shaft interfaces for clean dimensions before assembly.
  3. Assemble the frame and shafts: Make sure each shaft moves freely and the levers return consistently.
  4. Install the reed and tensioning parts: Verify that the warp path is straight and that the take-up arrangement holds the warp without slipping.
  5. Thread a short test warp: Use the documented 1.5 mm cotton warp and 3 mm heddle-hole arrangement as a reference configuration.
  6. Test a simple draft: Confirm shaft numbering, shed formation and beat before attempting a complex sequence.
  7. Load the intended draft: Preview it in Quickdraw, then transfer the shaft lifts carefully to the manual, mechanical or electronic control method.

Where the design is strong

  • Eight shafts in a tabletop format: More shaft control for pattern experiments without the footprint of a floor loom.
  • Digital fabrication: You can produce the custom parts from STL files rather than sourcing a commercial loom frame.
  • Visible control: Manual levers make the relationship between the draft and the shed easy to understand.
  • Upgradeable concept: The documented mechanical and Arduino Dobby routes provide a path beyond purely manual sequence selection.
  • Accessible drafting workflow: Quickdraw can help preview the pattern before you commit the warp.

Important limitations before you build

The available independent user feedback describes a very small weaving area, a small shed and difficulties maintaining tension. That report is anecdotal rather than a controlled performance test, but it identifies the issues most likely to affect practical use.

Best Value
Ashford Weaving Rigid Heddle Loom - 32"
  • Affordable and versatile
  • Quick and easy to warp and weave
  • Portable
  • Natural Unfinished Silver Beech Hardwood
  • Includes: Reed nylon 7.5dpi, 1-22 inch natural shuttle, 1-30 inch natural shuttle, step by step instruction booklet, threading hook, warping peg and clamp.

Small working area

Plan for samples, narrow studies and pattern development unless the particular build revision documents a larger width. Large blankets, broad yardage and production quantities are not established use cases for this design.

Shed and yarn clearance

A small shed limits shuttle clearance and can make bulky yarns or rapid insertion awkward. Match yarn size to the reed, heddle holes and available opening rather than assuming that every weaving yarn will fit.

Tension and take-up

Even tension is essential for a readable shed and consistent beat. Spend time aligning the warp path and checking the take-up mechanism before troubleshooting the draft itself; a mechanical tension problem can look like a threading or lift error.

Printed-part variability

Fit depends on printer calibration, layer adhesion and the revision of the files. Test moving joints and holes before committing to a full warp, and replace any part that flexes enough to change shaft alignment.

Is it suitable for your project?

Project need Suitability Reason
Learning shaft drafts Good fit Eight lever-controlled shafts expose the lift process directly.
Trying complex structures in small samples Good fit Digital files and Quickdraw support inexpensive experimentation.
Very long repeating sequences Better with an upgrade Mechanical Dobby storage is limited to approximately 40–50 settings; E-Dobby is intended for longer sequences.
Wide cloth or high-volume production Unestablished and likely unsuitable Independent feedback points to a small working area and shed; no authoritative production-performance data is published.
Portable workshop or classroom demonstrations Potentially suitable The design is tabletop-sized, but the final portability depends on the assembled frame and accessories.

Bottom line for a prospective builder

Fraens’ loom answers the question “Can a 3D-printed table loom handle complex weaving?” with a qualified yes: eight shafts and draft-based lever control make intricate sampling possible, and the mechanical or Arduino Dobby options can reduce sequence-management errors. Start with the documented PLA, 3 mm heddle holes, 1.5 mm cotton warp and 9.4 dpi reed arrangement, then validate fit and tension on a short warp. Treat the design as a compact experimental loom unless your chosen revision demonstrates the width and shed your project requires.
