The best paint for wood depends on three things: the wood’s condition, where it will be used, and the wear or weather it must withstand. Acrylic/latex and oil-based (usually alkyd) paints describe binder families. Enamel describes a hard-finish product category that may use either chemistry. Chalk and milk paints are primarily decorative furniture finishes. Choose the specific product only after checking its label for approved wood, interior or exterior use, primer, recoat time, cleanup and compatible sealer.
The five main types of wood paint
1. Acrylic or latex paint
Waterborne latex paints are typically made with acrylic or vinyl-acrylic polymers. Water evaporates, then the suspended particles coalesce into a film. Acrylic-resin latex topcoats generally resist weathering and retain gloss better than traditional oil-alkyd topcoats, according to the USDA Forest Service Wood Handbook.
Many acrylic latex products are made for interior or exterior wood, while others are formulated specifically for trim, cabinets or siding. The label—not the word “latex” alone—determines whether a product is suitable for your project.
- Good fit: properly prepared interior trim, walls, siding, doors and other wood listed by the manufacturer.
- Advantages: water cleanup, generally lower odor than solvent-borne coatings, and a relatively flexible film.
- Watch for: inadequate adhesion on glossy or contaminated surfaces, and bleed-through from extractive-rich woods without a suitable primer.
2. Oil-based and alkyd paint
Modern architectural “oil paint” usually means an alkyd formulation carried in organic solvent, not simply raw linseed oil. Alkyd coatings form a hard film and can be useful where leveling and resistance to handling matter.

Oil-alkyd primers have historically blocked wood extractives and end-grain water absorption better than latex primers. They are also less permeable and less flexible than latex primers, so the complete coating system must suit the movement and moisture conditions of the wood.
- Good fit: products specifically labeled for wood trim, doors, cabinets or exterior components where their harder film and leveling are useful.
- Advantages: strong leveling and a hard, durable surface after full cure.
- Trade-offs: solvent cleanup, stronger odor, longer drying or recoat periods on many products, and a less flexible film.
Never infer exterior suitability from the word “oil.” Confirm the product’s approved location, surface preparation and cleanup instructions.
3. Enamel
“Enamel” is best understood as a hard, smooth finish category rather than one chemical family. Waterborne urethane trim enamels, urethane-alkyd enamels and alkyd enamels are all sold for wood applications.

Compare the exact binder, approved substrate, sheen, cleanup method, dry and recoat times, and whether a primer is required. A waterborne urethane enamel may clean up with water, while an alkyd enamel may require solvent cleanup; both can be marketed as enamel.
- Good fit: doors, trim, cabinets, furniture and other surfaces that need a smooth, washable finish, provided the label approves the use.
- Advantages: typically harder and more wear-resistant than ordinary wall paint.
- Trade-offs: some formulas need longer curing before heavy use and can highlight poor sanding or application technique.
4. Chalk paint
Annie Sloan describes its Chalk Paint as a water-based decorative furniture paint for wood. The manufacturer says the product generally needs little or no priming or sanding, but those directions apply to that formulation and should not be generalized to every chalk-style paint.
Wax can add sheen, protection and durability to that system. Because wax changes both the surface feel and appearance, use only a compatible wax or topcoat and follow the maker’s cure instructions.

- Advantages: distinctive decorative finish and, for some named products, simplified preparation.
- Trade-offs: the paint alone may not provide the protection needed for frequent spills, abrasion or exterior exposure; sealing instructions vary by product.
5. Milk paint
Traditional milk paint is commonly sold as a powder mixed with water. Old Fashioned Milk Paint describes its product for furniture and woodwork and says it adheres best to clean, porous surfaces such as bare wood. For nonporous surfaces, the maker recommends an adhesion additive.
Surfaces exposed to spills or washing should be sealed, and heavier-wear uses may require a tougher topcoat. “Milk paint” is also used for premixed modern products, so check whether you are buying a traditional casein-based powder or a different formula.

How to choose paint for a particular wood project
Start with the substrate
Identify whether the wood is bare, previously painted, varnished, waxed, oily, stained or contaminated. A sound, clean, lightly abraded surface is easier to coat than a glossy or failing one.

- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 30 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
- Remove dirt, grease, wax and loose coating.
- Sand or otherwise dull glossy areas as the product label directs.
- Repair defects and let fillers dry before priming.
- Test adhesion and color on an inconspicuous area when the existing finish is uncertain.
Traditional milk paint favors porous bare wood; its manufacturer recommends an additive for nonporous surfaces. Chalk-paint preparation is formulation-specific, so follow that brand’s instructions rather than assuming all chalk paints behave alike.
Decide whether the project is indoors or outdoors
Exterior wood experiences rain, sunlight, temperature changes and moisture moving through the substrate. The USDA Forest Service explains that an exterior coating system needs adequate water-vapor permeability to reduce blistering and peeling. Select a product explicitly rated for the location and prepare the wood as directed.
For interior furniture and trim, focus on abrasion, cleaning, spills, blocking between painted surfaces and the time required before normal use. An interior product is not automatically suitable for a porch, shed or siding.

Account for wood species and extractives
Redwood, western redcedar and some other woods contain extractives that can discolor a light topcoat. Primer seals the surface, improves adhesion and helps even out color. The Forest Service handbook reports that oil-alkyd primers blocked extractives better than latex primers at the time of its publication, but current formulations differ. Use a primer whose label specifically claims stain or extractive blocking for your wood and topcoat.
Match the film to movement and moisture
Wood expands and contracts with moisture. A very rigid coating can fail when the substrate moves, while a coating that is too permeable or poorly applied may allow moisture-related damage. For exterior work, use the complete primer-and-topcoat system specified for wood rather than mixing products solely by paint type.
Choose the appearance and protection level
Opaque acrylic, alkyd and enamel coatings hide most grain. Chalk and traditional milk paints are often chosen for matte, softly worn or otherwise decorative furniture effects. A clear wax or topcoat can deepen sheen or alter color, so test the full system before coating the entire piece.

A reliable preparation and painting sequence
- Inspect: confirm the wood is sound and identify old paint, wax, oil, stains, mildew or decay.
- Clean and repair: remove contaminants, repair damage and allow repairs to dry.
- Prepare the surface: sand, degloss or strip only as required by the product and existing finish.
- Prime where needed: use a compatible primer for bare wood, extractive-rich species, stains, end grain or adhesion problems.
- Apply the topcoat: follow the label’s temperature, humidity, tool and film-thickness limits.
- Recoat on schedule: use the stated recoat time; “touch dry” does not mean fully cured.
- Protect during cure: avoid stacking, washing, abrasion or heavy use until the manufacturer’s cure period has elapsed.
- Seal decorative finishes when specified: use only a compatible wax or topcoat, especially on furniture exposed to spills.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by the word “enamel” without checking its actual binder and cleanup.
- Using interior paint outdoors or assuming any oil-based product is exterior-rated.
- Painting over glossy, greasy or waxed wood without the required preparation.
- Skipping stain-blocking primer on extractive-rich wood.
- Treating touch-dry time as full cure time.
- Applying an incompatible wax or clear coat that changes sheen, adhesion or color.
- Assuming all chalk or milk paints have the same preparation and sealing requirements.
The USDA Forest Service states: “Paint is not a preservative.” Paint cannot prevent decay when conditions support fungal growth, so repair leaks, improve drainage and replace unsound wood before relying on a coating.
