Use frost cloth, floating row cover, or a light sheet supported above the tender growth; remove it after the cold passes. The cover can limit damage, but it cannot guarantee flowers.
Check what is exposed before frost arrives
Look for swelling flower buds and newly emerged leaves. Growth that has started after a warm spell is more vulnerable to a return of freezing weather than a dormant shrub. The risk also depends on how cold it gets, how long the freeze lasts, and wind exposure; there is no single temperature cutoff that applies to every hydrangea. Ask Extension: Hydrangea macrophylla flower buds in winter
For bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla), flower buds often form on old wood. A frost may damage those buds even if the plant survives and leafs out again, so the shrub can grow without producing its usual flowers. Maryland Extension also identifies late spring frost as a cause of damage to hydrangea buds and leaves. University of Maryland Extension: Hydrangea—Identify and Manage Problems
Cover the shrub for the cold spell
- Check the forecast and the plant. If freezing weather is expected and tender buds or leaves have emerged, prepare a temporary cover.
- Set it up while it is still above freezing. Drape frost cloth, floating row cover, or a light sheet over the shrub, extending the cover to the ground where practical. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension: Keeping hydrangeas safe from frost
- Support the fabric above the growth. Use stakes, wire, or another frame so heavier cloth does not press on stems or new leaves. Delaware Extension recommends a cloth tent that covers the shrub to the ground without resting on its stems or new leaves. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension
- Remove the cover when the cold passes. Take it off during the day once temperatures rise above freezing so the plant receives light. A temporary cover left in place too long restricts light. University of Maryland Extension, Ask Extension: Should I cover my hydrangeas this week?
A light sheet is a practical option if you already have one; purpose-made frost cloth or floating row cover also works as a temporary cover. Choose something you can spread over the shrub without crushing tender growth and remove promptly when temperatures recover. The cited guidance does not establish a specific temperature rating or guarantee that any cover will save every bud.

Do not confuse frost cover with winter protection
A sheet or row cover is for a short cold event, not a season-long covering. For old-wood flowering hydrangeas, University of Connecticut describes a different winter measure: a wire-mesh enclosure loosely filled with leaves or mulch to insulate buds. That protection is removed after the danger of a killing frost has passed. University of Connecticut Home Garden Education Office: Hydrangea
What to expect after frost
Frost injury does not necessarily kill the hydrangea. Leaves may recover, but flower buds can be more vulnerable, and their loss can mean fewer blooms. Wait to assess the plant’s growth rather than assuming that damaged foliage means the whole shrub is lost. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension University of Maryland Extension
