To babyproof your house, first secure the hazards that appear throughout the home—unstable furniture, accessible poisons, cords, heat, and small objects—then check each room for its specific risks. Start before your baby becomes mobile, and repeat the inspection as they learn to roll, crawl, pull up, and climb. Babyproofing reduces risk; it does not replace close supervision.
Start with hazards found throughout the home
Get down near your child’s eye level and inspect the floors, reachable surfaces, furniture, outlets, cords, trash, and anything a child could climb. A room-by-room pass helps, but hazards move: a dropped coin, a charging cable, or a newly accessible drawer can change the picture in minutes.
- Remove choking and ingestion hazards. Pick up coins, beads, buttons, pins, pills, small toy parts, and other objects a child could put in their mouth. Keep button and lithium coin batteries secured in devices and stored out of reach. Secure plastic and dry-cleaning bags, and use a covered or otherwise inaccessible trash container. See the AAP’s home-safety guidance.
- Lock up hazardous products. Store medicines, cleaners, laundry and dishwasher detergents, and other dangerous products in locked or otherwise inaccessible locations. Child-resistant packaging is not childproof.
- Anchor furniture and televisions. Secure dressers, bookcases, TV stands, and other tall or unstable furniture to the wall using appropriate anchors and the manufacturer’s instructions. Put televisions on stable furniture designed to hold them, and keep tempting items off high surfaces so they do not invite climbing. See the CPSC’s Anchor It! guidance.
- Manage electrical and other cords. Keep cords out of reach and sight, including monitor, lamp, charger, and appliance cords. Use suitable outlet protection; if replacing outlets, the CPSC recommends tamper-resistant receptacles.
- Check alarms. Install smoke alarms on each level and inside and outside sleeping areas, and test them monthly. The CPSC advises placing carbon monoxide alarms outside sleeping areas, including in homes without fuel-burning appliances. Follow local requirements and the alarm manufacturer’s placement instructions.
- Block access to heat and sharp edges. Use screens or barriers around fireplaces, woodstoves, heaters, and other accessible heat sources. Gas fireplace glass can become very hot. Keep night-lights away from fabric and bedding and choose cool-running models. Corner and edge bumpers may reduce some bumps, but clearing sharp-edged furniture from busy paths is preferable where possible.
- Secure firearms, if present. Keep firearms unloaded and locked, with ammunition locked separately. The AAP says, “The safest home for a child is one without a gun.”
Nursery and bedrooms
Make the sleep space safe
Use an infant sleep product that meets applicable CPSC mandatory standards. Put your baby on their back, alone, on a firm, flat sleep surface, with no added items in the sleep area. Keep pillows, quilts, positioners, and other soft products out of the crib. Crib bumper pads have no demonstrated injury-prevention benefit and can pose suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment risks. The CPSC’s childproofing guidance and the AAP nursery checklist provide further details.
Check the crib, cords, and windows
- Inspect the crib for missing, broken, or loose parts. Keep it away from window and monitor cords.
- Keep mobiles, cords, small objects, plastic packaging, and accessible toy parts away from the sleep space. Secure an overhead mobile and remove it when your child can get up on hands and knees or reaches five months, whichever comes first.
- For a child who can climb, the AAP advises moving from a crib when the child is 35 inches (89 cm) tall, or sooner if the top rail is below three-quarters of the child’s height.
- Where window guards are needed, install them securely and preserve an emergency escape route. CPSC guidance says to limit window openings to four inches or less and keep at least one window in each room with guards usable for fire escape.
Place smoke alarms outside sleeping rooms and on each level, and test them monthly. Place carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas according to CPSC guidance and local requirements.

Bathroom
- Stay within reach during bathing. Never leave a baby alone in or near bath water, even briefly. Bath seats and rings are not safety devices or substitutes for supervision. The CPSC warns that “Children can drown in moments.”
- Lock away medicines and cleaners. Do this even when containers have child-resistant packaging.
- Reduce scald risk. CPSC guidance says water heaters can be set to 120°F or lower and anti-scald devices can be used. Follow appliance instructions, plumbing requirements, and local rules.
- Scan for standing water. Include toilets, buckets, and other containers in your check; drowning hazards are not limited to bathtubs or pools.
Kitchen and dining area
- Lock away cleaners, detergent packets, knives, matches, and lighters. Keep alcohol, liquid nicotine, and edible cannabis products inaccessible to children.
- Do not leave a baby alone in a high chair, and use all of its safety straps.
- Keep small objects and food-related choking hazards off accessible floors and surfaces.
- Secure a freestanding range or stove with an anti-tip bracket. Keep children away from hot cooking surfaces.
Living room, family room, and play area
- Anchor televisions and furniture. Move toys and other tempting objects off high shelves and surfaces that could encourage a child to climb.
- Secure cords and keep remote controls and other devices with small batteries out of reach.
- Move climbable furniture away from windows. Screens do not prevent falls; use suitable window guards or opening controls while preserving emergency egress.
- Screen fireplaces and heaters. Consider moving sharp-edged coffee tables out of traffic areas while your child is learning to walk.
- Keep older siblings’ small toys, magnets, balloons, and loose parts away from children under three.
Stairs, hallways, doors, and windows
Use gates appropriate to the location
Choose a child safety gate that meets current standards, fits the opening, and cannot be dislodged easily. At the top of stairs, use a screw-mounted gate; do not substitute a pressure-mounted or pet gate. Avoid older gates with large V-shaped openings, which can entrap a child’s head or neck, and avoid accordion-style gates. The AAP advises gates at both the top and bottom of stairs as a child starts crawling and walking.
Prevent falls from windows
Window screens are not fall-prevention devices. Use appropriate window guards or safety netting, inspect them, and limit openings to four inches or less in keeping with CPSC guidance. Preserve an emergency escape route: at least one window in each room with guards should remain usable for fire escape. Keep beds, cribs, furniture, and toys away from windows.

Remove cord and door hazards
Choose cordless window coverings when possible. Move furniture and toys away from any remaining cords. If cords remain, follow the CPSC’s window-covering cord safety guidance; retrofit kits do not address every dangling pull-cord hazard. Use door knob covers or locks only if an adult can open the door quickly in an emergency. Check glass, swinging, and folding doors for collision and finger-pinch hazards.
If your home has a pool or spa
A pool or spa needs layered barriers in addition to ordinary room-by-room babyproofing. The CPSC describes measures including self-closing, self-locking doors or alarms, self-closing and self-latching gates, fences, covers, and alarms. Actively supervise children around water and reestablish barriers after every use. Consult current CPSC and Pool Safely guidance for pool-barrier details; a household safety gate is not a substitute.

When to start—and how to keep the checklist useful
Start before your child begins moving independently, then reassess as their abilities and reach change. Check safety devices after using them and whenever furniture, rooms, or routines change. A gate left open, a lock not re-engaged, or an object moved within reach can undo a precaution.
Babyproofing is not a one-time installation project. As the CPSC puts it: “Remember, too, that no device is completely childproof; determined toddlers have been known to overcome or disable them.” Adapt this checklist for your home’s stairs, rental restrictions, window types, fireplaces, pool access, siblings, and your child’s developmental stage. The AAP notes that every home differs and no checklist covers every household.
