How to Get That Mildew Smell Out of Your Clothes

A safe, step-by-step way to remove mildew odor from washable clothes, choose between vinegar, baking soda, oxygen treatment and bleach, and stop the smell returning.

Check the care label, separate the musty garments, and treat washable items before rewashing. For odor that survives a normal wash, soak compatible clothing for at least 30 minutes in one part white vinegar to two parts water, rinse thoroughly, then wash with detergent at the hottest temperature the label allows. Dry completely with strong airflow or sunlight. If the odor returns, clean the washer as well as the clothes.

What to do first

  1. Separate the affected items. Keep musty clothing out of clean laundry so the odor does not spread.
  2. Read every care label. Note the maximum wash temperature, bleach restrictions, tumble-dry limits, and any dry-clean-only instruction.
  3. Inspect for visible growth. A smell without spots usually needs deodorizing; dark or fuzzy marks may require a stain treatment and more careful fabric testing.
  4. Protect yourself. Wear rubber gloves and work in a ventilated area when handling cleaning solutions. Test any product on an inconspicuous area first, as advised by University of Georgia Cooperative Extension textile-care guidance.

Best method for washable clothing

1. Vinegar pre-soak

For garments whose labels and fiber content permit it, mix one part white vinegar with two parts water. Soak for at least 30 minutes, following Whirlpool’s published laundry guidance, then rinse thoroughly. This is a pre-treatment, not a substitute for detergent washing.

Do not use vinegar on delicate fabrics or elastic when the care label or manufacturer warns against it. Never leave vinegar sitting in the washing machine, and never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. If bleach will be used later, rinse the garment completely first.

2. Machine wash

Wash with your normal detergent at the hottest temperature allowed by the care label. Hotter is not automatically better: wool, silk, spandex, leather, mohair, and some dyed fabrics can be damaged by heat or bleach.

Whirlpool also suggests adding approximately 1/2 cup of baking soda to a regular wash when the garment and washer instructions permit it. Measure it into the wash as directed by your machine; do not assume it is safe for every specialty fabric.

3. Oxygen-based treatment for persistent odor

For colored or bleach-sensitive items, use a commercial oxygen-based, color-safe laundry treatment according to its package directions. Oxygen products are generally the better choice when chlorine bleach is unsuitable, but the product label and the garment label control the temperature, concentration, and soaking time.

4. Chlorine bleach only when explicitly safe

Use chlorine bleach only if the care label allows it, the item is colorfast, and the bleach directions match the wash. Clorox warns against bleaching wool, silk, mohair, leather, spandex, and non-fast colors. Bleach can help with some visible mildew staining, but it is not a universal deodorizer and can permanently damage the wrong fiber.

5. Dry completely

Air-dry outdoors or in a well-ventilated place with strong airflow when practical. Sunlight can help freshen suitable fabrics, but follow the label because prolonged sun can fade dyes. Do not fold, hang in a closet, or place in a hamper while any dampness remains.

Choosing a treatment by fabric and problem

Method Best use Safety and limitations Time and follow-up
Vinegar solution, 1:2 Musty odor on compatible washable garments Rinse well; avoid delicate fibers and elastic; never mix with chlorine bleach Soak at least 30 minutes, then detergent-wash
Baking soda, about 1/2 cup Odor support in a regular wash Use only when garment and washer instructions permit Add during the wash with detergent
Oxygen-based laundry treatment Persistent odor or visible staining on many colored and bleach-sensitive items Follow the product and care-label directions; test first Use the label’s stated soak or wash time
Chlorine bleach Some mildew stains on bleach-safe, colorfast laundry Not for wool, silk, mohair, leather, spandex, or non-fast colors; never combine with vinegar Use only the label-approved dose and cycle
Dry-cleaning service Dry-clean-only clothing or garments with uncertain fiber safety Do not soak or home-bleach unless the cleaner or label says it is safe Tell the cleaner the garment has a mildew odor

What if the clothes have already been dried?

Heat from a dryer does not guarantee that mildew odor has been removed. Let the garment cool, then use the care-label-compatible vinegar pre-soak or oxygen treatment, rinse, wash, and dry fully. Avoid putting it through repeated hot cycles when the label sets a lower limit, and inspect for stains before drying again because heat can make some stains harder to remove.

When the smell keeps coming back

A clean garment can pick up odor from a washer with detergent residue, biofilm, or standing moisture. After removing the laundry, inspect and clean the areas your model identifies as serviceable:

Use a washer-cleaning product or cycle approved for your model, following its instructions. Do not pour vinegar into a washer that is being treated with chlorine bleach or a cleaner that warns against acids. If the odor persists after cleaning, check for drainage problems, leaks, or damp areas around the appliance.

Preventing mildew odor in work and everyday clothes

  • Remove laundry promptly when the cycle ends; do not let wet clothes sit in the drum.
  • Leave the washer door or lid open between loads when safe, so the interior can dry.
  • Avoid overloading, which prevents detergent and rinse water from reaching all surfaces.
  • Use the detergent amount recommended for your water conditions and machine.
  • Dry garments fully with airflow before putting them in a hamper or closet.
  • Store clean clothing completely dry in a cool, ventilated space.
  • For heavily damp construction or outdoor workwear, hang items to dry as soon as the workday ends rather than leaving them sealed in a bag or vehicle.

When to stop home treatment

Take the garment to a professional cleaner when it is dry-clean-only, visibly deteriorating, heavily contaminated, or made from a fiber you cannot identify. If anyone develops breathing or skin symptoms around the clothing, isolate the item and seek appropriate medical advice rather than repeatedly applying stronger chemicals.
