The most reliable decorating order is lights first, ornaments from large to small, optional ribbon or garland, then the topper and tree skirt. That sequence makes the tree easier to balance and keeps later layers from hiding earlier work. Your colors, ornament collection, ribbon style and overall fullness are personal choices—not fixed rules.

Plan the tree and gather supplies

Measure the tree area before you begin. Include enough ceiling clearance for the topper, and leave room to walk safely around the tree. Choose an outlet nearby, route cords away from walking paths, and keep exits clear.

  • Christmas-tree lights rated for the intended indoor or outdoor location
  • Ornaments and hooks or other manufacturer-approved hangers
  • Optional ribbon or garland
  • A tree topper or bow
  • A tree skirt or other base covering
  • A stable step stool or ladder rated for your weight

Keep heavier decorations on stronger branches and avoid climbing on furniture. A stable ladder or step stool is safer for reaching the crown.

Prepare the tree before decorating

Artificial trees

Assemble every section, then shape and spread the branches before adding anything. Pulling branches into different directions exposes gaps and creates a fuller silhouette, so you can place decorations where they will have the most effect.

Fresh trees

Use a stable stand and position the tree at least three feet from heat sources, including fireplaces, radiators, heat vents and space heaters. Keep it out of exit paths. For a cut tree, make a fresh two-inch cut immediately before placing it in the stand; a dried cut surface can reduce water uptake. Check the stand daily and keep the tree watered. Dispose of the tree after Christmas or when it becomes dry, following local recycling or collection guidance.

Put on the lights first

Test every strand on the floor before attaching it. Discard any strand with frayed, pinched or otherwise damaged wires, broken bulbs or damaged connections. Follow the manufacturer’s limit for how many strands may be connected, and choose lights carrying the label of a recognized testing laboratory.

Choose a lighting pattern

  • Vertical sections: Divide the tree into three or more vertical areas and work up and down in alternating passes. This is quick and makes removal easier.
  • Spiral: Wind the strand in a gradual spiral from the top toward the base. Keep spacing even and step back to find dark areas.
  • Branch wrapping: Work from the trunk toward the tips on individual branches. This gives depth but uses more lights and takes longer.

These are styling options, not safety requirements. After the first pass, view the tree from several angles and fill visibly dark sections without forcing lights into tight bends or pinching wires.

Hang ornaments from large to small

Place the largest pieces first

Start with your largest or heaviest ornaments, distributing them around the tree rather than clustering them on one side. Place some deeper in the branches to create depth and help fill open areas.

Add medium ornaments

Use medium pieces to connect the large ornaments visually. Vary colors, shapes and finishes as you move around the tree. Do not put every matching ornament at the same height; stagger them so the eye travels through the tree.

Fill with small ornaments

Use small ornaments at branch tips and in remaining gaps. Step back frequently—several feet if possible—to check the silhouette, color balance and weight distribution. The number of ornaments per foot is a retailer’s decorating recipe, not a universal standard; use the amount that suits your tree and collection.

Add ribbon or garland if you want another layer

Ribbon and garland are optional. Choose by size, weight, texture and how well the material works with your existing ornaments.

Three ways to arrange it

  • Wind it around: Make a loose spiral, tucking the material into branches at intervals.
  • Create swags: Anchor a length, dip it into a soft curve, then anchor it again. Repeat at consistent levels.
  • Hang lengths from the crown: Cut several pieces and let them fall vertically, securing each near the top and lower branches.

Textured ribbon can grip branches better, while wide ribbon can disguise a bare patch. Secure heavy material at several points so it does not pull branches down.

Finish with the topper and base

Attach the topper or bow only after the lower layers are balanced. Secure it firmly, straighten it from the main viewing angle and check that it does not make the tree unstable. Add a tree skirt or another base decoration if desired, keeping it clear of hot light components and away from trip hazards.

Christmas-tree safety checks

Lights and electrical connections

  • Inspect lights before each use and remove damaged strands.
  • Use lights rated for their intended indoor or outdoor setting.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s connection limits.
  • Keep bulbs from touching easily scorched materials such as paper or fabric. London Fire Brigade recommends LED lights because they run cooler and use less energy than older incandescent lights.

Live-tree care

  • Water a live tree daily.
  • Keep it at least three feet from heat sources and away from exits.
  • Turn lights off before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Never decorate the tree with lit candles.

NIST describes a fire demonstration in which a watered tree did not ignite under the same ignition source that ignited a dry tree. That result illustrates why moisture matters; watering does not make every tree fireproof.

What the fire statistics mean

The National Fire Protection Association estimated an annual average of 210 U.S. home fires involving Christmas trees, six civilian deaths, 16 civilian injuries and $16.2 million in property damage, based on 2016 figures cited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. These are dated annual averages, not a current-year count. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that almost one-third of home Christmas-tree fires are caused by electrical problems; the retrieved guidance does not state the underlying study year.

A simple final inspection

  1. View the tree from the doorway and from each main seating area.
  2. Move a large ornament or ribbon section if one side looks heavier.
  3. Check that the stand is stable and cords are not across walkways.
  4. Confirm that lights are intact, connections follow the manufacturer’s limit and no bulb touches a flammable material.
  5. Set a reminder to water a fresh tree daily and switch lights off whenever the tree is unattended.
