Choose your pumpkin project by effort, display spot, materials and whether you want to cut the pumpkin. These 35 ideas range from paint-only designs for indoor tables to carved, illuminated porch displays. Treat them as inspiration rather than tested project results.
Quick guide: No-carve projects are generally simpler and work well indoors; carving and etching add texture but require more dexterity. Acrylic or spray paint covers broad areas, paint pens handle fine lines, chalkboard paint creates a writable matte surface, and puffy paint adds raised details.
Before you decorate: choose a technique and work safely

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated an annual average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments during the three years covered by its 2022 release; 55% involved pumpkin carving. CPSC says adults should do the carving, while children can scoop pulp or trace a design. Oklahoma State University Extension quotes Gina Peek: “All carving should be done by an adult.” Use a purpose-made kit, a clean, dry, well-lit workspace and dry hands and tools, as advised by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Carved and etched pumpkins
1. Friendly classic jack-o’-lantern
Materials: Pumpkin, carving kit, marker and battery LED. Cut a simple smile and round eyes; vary the expression with triangular or circular eyes.

Materials: Printed stencil, tape, marker, carving kit and LED. Transfer the stencil before cutting; simplify tiny details for a sturdier design.
Safety: An adult should carve; children may trace or scoop. Use an LED or glow stick, not a candle.

Materials: Etching tool, pencil and soft cloth. Scratch away only the orange skin for leaves, swirls or initials; combine shallow and deeper lines.
5. Star-and-moon sky
Materials: Star and crescent templates, carving kit and battery LED. Arrange large and small cutouts like constellations.
Safety: Have an adult make every cut; children may trace or scoop. Use a battery LED or glow stick.
6. Geometric lantern
Materials: Ruler, marker, carving kit and LED. Repeat diamonds, triangles or circles around the shell; alternate sizes for rhythm.

Materials: Large letter stencil, marker, carving kit and LED. Cut one initial or a short monogram and frame it with dots.

Painted and embellished no-carve ideas
9. Black cat face
Materials: Black acrylic paint, white or gold paint pen and brush. Paint ears, eyes and whiskers; add a collar stripe as a variation.
10. Simple painted ghost
Materials: White paint, black paint or pen and brush. Cover the pumpkin white, then add oval eyes and a small mouth; try a row of tiny ghosts.
11. Bright monster
Materials: Bright acrylic paint, contrasting paint, brushes and optional paint pen. Use one vivid base color and add mismatched eyes, teeth or spots.

12. Two-tone dipped pumpkin
Materials: Two paint colors, painter’s tape and brush. Block or dip the lower half in a second color; reverse the order for each pumpkin in a pair.
13. Chalkboard message
Materials: Chalkboard paint, brush and chalk or chalk marker. Paint a panel or the whole pumpkin with a seasonal greeting; erase and update it through fall.
14. Botanical paint-pen lines
Materials: Paint pens in one or two colors and pencil. Draw vines, stems and leaves in fine lines; trace a real leaf for a simple outline.
15. Raised puffy-paint pattern
Materials: Base paint, puffy paint and drop cloth. Add dots, scallops or web-like lines over the dry base; keep the raised design monochrome for a graphic look.

Materials: Two or three fall-color paints and round sponge daubers. Stagger dots in different sizes; use metallic dots as the accent color.
17. Checkerboard or stripes
Materials: Two paints, painter’s tape, ruler and brush. Tape vertical and horizontal bands for checks, or use diagonal stripes for a faster variation.
18. Metallic centerpiece pumpkin
Materials: Metallic-look paint, primer if desired, brush and tray. Paint one pumpkin in a single metallic tone; group it with matte pumpkins for contrast.
19. Mini place markers
Materials: Mini pumpkins, paint pen or chalkboard paint and chalk. Write each guest’s name; add a tiny leaf or initial to distinguish duplicates.

25. Stacked pumpkin topiary
Materials: Two or three pumpkins, sturdy support or planter, foliage and optional ribbon. Stack from largest to smallest; use painted pumpkins for a lighter visual effect.
26. Seasonal character stack
Materials: Stackable pumpkins, paint, felt or paper features and adhesive. Build a scarecrow, snowman-style ghost or friendly monster; change the hat to fit your theme.
27. Pumpkin planter
Materials: Pumpkin, small potted plant or cut foliage, tray and optional liner. Set the plant inside as a temporary vessel rather than cutting a drainage system; use faux foliage indoors.

Materials: Pumpkin, large stencil, paint or paint pen and clear placement area. Apply readable house numbers; use a contrasting color and place it where delivery visitors can see it.

Materials: Several pumpkins, battery LEDs or glow sticks and weather-suitable markers. Space them along a walkway without narrowing the path; vary heights for visibility.
30. Pumpkin-and-gourd cluster
Materials: Pumpkins, gourds, tray or porch surface and optional foliage. Arrange by size and color; place the tallest item behind the smallest.
