To get rid of black mold, fix the moisture problem, then clean hard surfaces or remove materials that cannot be cleaned and dried completely. You do not need to identify the mold species first: color does not change the basic cleanup steps. A limited visible area may be suitable for careful DIY cleanup; extensive water damage, hidden growth, HVAC contamination, or vulnerable occupants are reasons to seek professional guidance.
Before cleanup: decide whether it is safe to do yourself
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses about 10 square feet as a general threshold for homeowners considering cleanup. This is a guide, not a guarantee that a job below that size is safe: the extent of water damage, porous materials, hidden growth, and who lives in the home also matter.
| Situation | Practical response |
|---|---|
| Limited visible growth, roughly under 10 square feet, with limited water damage | Careful DIY cleanup may be reasonable if you can stop the moisture source, use protective equipment, and remove or clean affected materials safely. |
| More than about 10 square feet, extensive water damage, hidden or recurring growth, or possible HVAC involvement | Consult a mold-removal professional. The source and extent of contamination may require investigation beyond the visible surface. |
| Someone in the home has allergies, a weakened immune system, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD | That person should not take part in cleanup. Ask a professional about the safest approach, especially if the affected area is not minor. |
CDC links indoor mold exposure with upper-respiratory symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and hypersensitivity pneumonitis in susceptible individuals. Because health risk depends on the person and exposure, do not use the mold’s color as a measure of danger.
What to wear and prepare
Before disturbing mold, put on a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, protective gloves, and goggles that seal out dust and particles. Suitable glove materials include nitrile, rubber, or vinyl. Ventilate the work area by opening windows or doors when it is safe to do so. Keep people who are not doing the cleanup away from the work area.

How to clean or remove black mold
- Stop the moisture. Repair the leak, flooding source, condensation problem, or other cause of dampness. Cleaning without correcting the source leaves conditions for mold to return.
- Ventilate and put on protective equipment. Open windows or doors when safe, then wear the N95 respirator, gloves, and sealed goggles before disturbing affected surfaces.
- Clean hard surfaces. Use water and detergent, remove all visible mold, and dry the surface immediately.
- Remove materials that cannot be cleaned and dried completely. Porous materials can retain contamination. Moldy ceiling tiles and some drywall, carpet, upholstery, or insulation may need to be removed and discarded rather than scrubbed.
- Finish the repair before covering surfaces. Do not paint or caulk over mold. Complete the water repair and cleanup first.
- Use disinfectants cautiously, if at all. EPA says bleach and other biocides are not routine practice for most mold cleanup. If you choose to use bleach or another disinfectant, follow its label and ventilate the area. CDC’s 2024 guidance sets a maximum of 1 cup of household bleach per 1 gallon of water. Never mix bleach with ammonia or another cleaner.
CDC’s 2024 advice is explicit: “DO NOT mix bleach and ammonia because it can create toxic vapors.”
When a professional is the better choice
Call a qualified mold-removal professional when the affected area is larger than roughly 10 square feet, water damage is extensive, growth is hidden or keeps returning, or mold may have entered an HVAC system. Professional guidance is also prudent if a vulnerable occupant is in the home or if you cannot safely correct the moisture source and remove contaminated material.

This helps the professional assess the scope rather than judging the problem by the visible patch alone.
Should you test black mold?
CDC does not recommend routine home mold testing. There are no set standards for an acceptable quantity of different molds, and testing can be expensive. If you can see or smell mold, act on the moisture and cleanup problem rather than waiting for a test to identify its type.

How to prevent mold from coming back
- Keep indoor humidity no higher than 50%, as CDC advises. EPA describes a 30–60% humidity range for reducing mold growth.
- Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans that vent outdoors, and vent the clothes dryer outdoors.
- Repair roof, wall, window, and plumbing leaks promptly.
- Dry wet areas and contents within 24–48 hours. CDC’s 2024 guidance and current EPA guidance emphasize prompt drying.
- Use air conditioners or dehumidifiers to help control humidity, and avoid carpeting in persistently damp locations.
EPA puts the central principle simply: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” It also notes that it is impossible to remove all mold and mold spores indoors; the practical goal is to control moisture and remove active growth, not to make a home spore-free.
