To clean a dryer vent, switch off and unplug the dryer, disconnect the exhaust duct, remove lint from the dryer outlet and accessible ductwork with a vacuum and a vent brush, then reconnect the duct securely. Check the outdoor flap for free movement and confirm that air escapes when the dryer runs. Clean the lint screen after every load and the vent pipe at least once a year, or sooner if drying takes longer than usual.
Why dryer-vent cleaning matters
Lint can build up in the dryer or exhaust duct, restrict airflow, cause excessive heat, and lead to a fire in some dryers, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. A restricted vent can also leave clothes damp or make cycles take longer.
What you need
- A vacuum with a hose attachment.
- A dryer-vent brush kit long and flexible enough for the accessible duct run. Follow its instructions for hand rotation or use with an electric screwdriver.
- Access to the dryer plug and the exterior vent hood.
For a long run or one with several bends, equipment must suit the duct layout; a short household brush may not reach or clean it effectively. See the Dryer Vent Safety Council guidance on selecting mechanical cleaning equipment.
Clean an accessible dryer vent step by step
- Turn off and unplug the dryer. Disconnect its electrical supply before opening the exhaust connection. If the dryer is gas-powered and you are unsure how to move or isolate it safely, arrange qualified service rather than disturbing its gas connection.
- Move the dryer carefully. Pull it forward only as far as needed to reach the exhaust connection. Avoid crushing or sharply bending the duct.
- Disconnect the transition duct. Separate the duct from the dryer outlet and the wall connection as needed to clean the accessible sections. GE’s manufacturer instructions call for disconnecting the duct and vacuuming it with a hose attachment.
- Remove lint from accessible areas. Vacuum lint at the dryer outlet, inside the duct, and at the wall connection. Use a purpose-made vent brush for the duct; rotate it by hand or with a drill only as the kit manufacturer directs. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory guide describes this approach.
- Inspect the exterior termination. From outdoors, check for lint, nests, or other obstructions. The flap should move freely. Remove accessible lint or debris without damaging the hood or pushing an obstruction farther into the duct.
- Reconnect the duct securely. Reattach the exhaust duct before restoring power. Never operate the dryer with the exhaust disconnected.
- Check airflow. Run the dryer and confirm that the outdoor flap opens and exhaust air can escape. If airflow remains weak or the flap does not open, stop and investigate the blockage or call a qualified professional.
How often to clean the vent
Clean the lint screen before or after every load. Clean the vent pipe at least once a year, as advised by the National Fire Protection Association. Inspect or clean it sooner if drying takes longer than normal, clothes remain damp at cycle end, airflow at the outdoor hood is weak, the flap will not open, lint is visible behind the dryer, the duct is crushed or kinked, or you find animal or insect nesting.

When to hire a professional
Use a qualified dryer-vent service for a long or complex duct run, a roof termination, an inaccessible wall duct, a severe or recurring blockage, or cleaning inside the dryer chassis. The NFPA recommends having a qualified service person clean the dryer’s interior periodically. A professional can select cleaning equipment for the run’s length and bends and assess sections that cannot be reached safely from the appliance or outlet.
Check the duct material and installation
The CPSC advises replacing plastic or foil accordion ducting with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers also recommends rigid or semi-rigid sheet-metal venting and following the appliance manufacturer’s installation instructions. Before replacing ductwork, check the dryer manual and local requirements; cleaning and replacement are different jobs, and the correct material or layout depends on the installation.

Take extra care with oil- or solvent-contaminated clothing
Clothing contaminated with gasoline, cooking or finishing oils, cleaning agents, stains, alcohol, spot removers, or dry-cleaning solvents can pose a fire risk. The CPSC, NFPA, and AHAM advise washing such items more than once when possible. If machine drying is necessary, use the lowest heat and a cool-down cycle, then remove the items promptly; do not leave them in the dryer or pile them in a basket.
