These recommendations and distinctions come from This Old House’s roundup, whose page was updated April 23, 2025 despite the “2026” title. Its article does not establish that every listed mop was personally tested, and prices shown there were publication-time prices rather than dependable current prices.

“Best” depends on whether you need steam, spray control, a wringing system or a maneuverable flat head. These products are not interchangeable for every floor or cleaning job.
Which mop type fits your cleaning job?
Steam mops
Steam mops heat water in a tank and use steam to loosen grime. They can be useful for stuck-on soil, but steam safety is model- and floor-specific. Never assume that approval for one BISSELL steam model applies to another.

Spray mops
Spray mops dispense liquid from a refillable tank or bottle onto a pad. They give you direct control over how much moisture reaches the floor and avoid carrying a bucket for routine cleaning.
Spin mops
Spin mops use a spinner to wring water from the head. O-Cedar’s EasyWring and RinseClean systems add a foot pedal for hands-free wringing; RinseClean uses two buckets to separate clean and dirty water.

Choose it when loosening grime matters more than the simplicity of a dry or lightly damp pad. Use only on flooring that the PowerFresh instructions and your flooring manufacturer identify as suitable. Steam can damage finishes or seams when the material is not sealed or the model is not approved.

Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Microfiber Floor Mop: best pack
The Reveal package includes three washable, reusable microfiber pads and two refillable bottles. The roundup describes it as suitable for most floors, including vinyl, hardwood, laminate and tile, subject to the floor maker’s care instructions.
It is the practical choice when you want spare pads available while another is in the wash. This Old House reports customer complaints about bottle leakage; that is reported user feedback, not an independently measured failure rate.
Microfiber Wholesale Mop: best handle
This flat microfiber mop has an extendable handle, two pads and a 360-degree swivel. The adjustable shaft can help different users clean without bending as far, while the swivel is useful around furniture and tight corners.
The roundup also reports that some customers felt the mop became less sturdy with use. If long-term rigidity is your priority, inspect the handle connection and keep realistic expectations about that reported feedback.

O-Cedar ProMist MAX Microfiber Spray Mop: best mop head

Floor compatibility: check the exact model
Floor material alone is not enough to establish safety. Confirm the mop’s instructions and your flooring manufacturer’s guidance, especially for steam, excess water, unfinished surfaces, and damaged seams.
For example, BISSELL’s separate SpinWave SmartSteam model 3897A is specified for certain sealed hard floors and is explicitly not intended for vinyl. That specification belongs to SpinWave SmartSteam, not the PowerFresh recommendation above. The same page lists reusable pads, a 25-foot cord, two steam settings plus a no-steam mode, and controlled third-party laboratory claims for killing named organisms under directed use. Those facts do not constitute comparative testing of the four products in this roundup.

Reusable pads, replacement parts and care
Washing microfiber pads
This Old House says most microfiber pads can be machine washed and that many may be washed up to 100 times. Treat that as a general guide, not a guarantee for every brand. Follow the pad maker’s instructions, remove grit before washing, and dry completely before storage.
O-Cedar head care
O-Cedar says EasyWring and RinseClean heads can be hand- or machine-washed in cold or warm water. It advises avoiding bleach and fabric softener, then laying the head flat or hanging it to air-dry instead of tumble-drying.
Buying replacements
Replacement heads and pads must match the exact mop system. O-Cedar identifies compatible EasyWring and RinseClean refill heads; BISSELL pads and parts likewise depend on the specific model. Optional O-Cedar PACS floor-cleaner drops are scented, including Crisp Citrus and Lavender, so they are consumables rather than a fragrance-free default.

O-Cedar says its EasyWring and RinseClean heads remove over 99% of bacteria, but qualifies the statement: “removes, does not kill,” specifically naming E. coli and Staph. aureus, and limiting the cited tests to pre-finished hardwood and ceramic tile with tap water. O-Cedar says an independent accredited laboratory performed the testing, but the page does not name the laboratory or give a test year.

Do not broaden that statement to other organisms, floors or cleaning solutions. Likewise, BISSELL’s 99.9% claim applies to the separately named SpinWave SmartSteam model under directed-use, controlled-laboratory conditions, with results that can vary. Neither statement is an independent head-to-head ranking of these four mops.
How to choose among the four
- Identify the floor. Check the flooring manufacturer’s rules for steam, water and cleaning chemicals.
- Choose the moisture method. Select steam for approved sealed floors and stuck-on grime, spray for controlled application, or spin for bucket-based wringing.
- Prioritize the handling feature. Pick the PowerFresh scrubber, Reveal’s extra pads and bottles, the Microfiber Wholesale adjustable handle, or the ProMist MAX reversible head according to the job.
- Plan maintenance. Confirm replacement-pad availability and washing instructions before purchase.
- Verify the live listing. The cited roundup’s rankings and prices may have changed since its April 23, 2025 update.
Are these mops genuinely “tested”?
The title reflects This Old House’s roundup, which says its team reviews top-rated models and sometimes performs in-person testing after research. The article text does not document personal testing of every one of these four products, so the distinctions above should be read as the roundup’s reported features and customer feedback, not as a uniform independent laboratory comparison.
For context, Ideal Home describes a separate method in which its steam cleaners and mops are tested in real homes for at least two weeks, including normal cleaning and deliberately placed dirt. That methodology is not evidence that the This Old House products received the same testing.
Bottom line
Choose the BISSELL PowerFresh when approved-floor scrubbing is your priority; the Rubbermaid Reveal when you want multiple washable pads and refill bottles; the Microfiber Wholesale model when handle adjustment matters most; and the O-Cedar ProMist MAX when a reversible, highly maneuverable spray head is the deciding feature. Whichever you select, verify exact floor compatibility and replacement-part fit before using it.
