For lasting prevention, close entry gaps first; if you buy a spray, check the current label for the target species, permitted application site, and exact precautions. The EPA label examples below are examples of labeled uses—not hands-on reviews or a ranked top five.
Why stink bugs gather around homes
Brown marmorated stink bugs seek places to overwinter in early autumn and may congregate around building entry points. The U.S. EPA says they do not cause structural damage or reproduce inside homes. Their presence can still be distressing, especially when insects emerge from concealed gaps.
EPA says established areas can see large numbers enter buildings, but it does not provide a named, year-specific statistic suitable for turning that observation into a typical count for an individual home. The practical response is to prevent access rather than rely on spraying after they get inside. See the EPA’s brown marmorated stink bug guidance.
What to do before buying a spray
Inspect likely entry points and close openings. EPA recommends caulking around windows, weatherstripping doors or adding door sweeps, sealing foundation cracks, and securing crawlspace openings. Reducing debris and edible vegetation near the foundation can also make the area less inviting.

- Install or repair door sweeps and weatherstripping where exterior doors do not close tightly.
- Seal foundation cracks and make sure crawlspace openings are secured.
- Clear debris and reduce edible vegetation close to the foundation where practical.
A spray may kill exposed insects, but it does not close a gap. EPA does not present household aerosols or foggers as long-term stink bug management; insects can still emerge through cracks after a product dries.
How to choose a stink bug spray
Choose by the label on the exact product you plan to use—not by a broad claim on a retailer page. Confirm the species named, whether use is permitted indoors, outdoors, or both, and what the label instructs you to treat. A product that lists a stink bug is not automatically appropriate for every surface or room.

Use the label for the exact product and site
Application directions and precautions vary by product. Read the label before spraying, use only on the sites and in the manner it allows, and follow its instructions for food, water, people, and treated surfaces. For the cited 2025 HD label, indoor directions include covering or removing exposed food and food-processing surfaces; outdoor directions include avoiding water supplies and not spraying into the air. Those instructions should not be assumed to apply to every product.
EPA’s guidance on environmental hazard labeling for certain outdoor pyrethroid and synergized pyrethrin products describes optional 2013 revisions addressing occasional invaders such as brown marmorated stink bugs, with the aim of reducing runoff and drift. That language is specific to certain products and is not a universal direction for all sprays.

EPA’s veratrine registration information describes products restricted to direct spray on specified exterior vertical surfaces, with horizontal-surface and perimeter applications prohibited and application frequency limited. This is a specific registration example, not a recommendation for a household stink bug spray.

If the problem is persistent or extensive, EPA suggests asking a pest-control professional whether treating vegetation around the home’s foundation is appropriate in that situation. A professional can assess the site and discuss applicable products and directions. This does not replace sealing openings that allow insects inside.
