A tipi is a portable, conical dwelling particularly associated with some Indigenous peoples of the North American Plains. Its pole frame, fitted cover, opening, and adjustable smoke flaps work together as a shelter; it is not simply a cone-shaped tent. Designs and meanings vary between communities and owners, and modern canvas tipi tents are a separate practical subject from the histories of the peoples who developed and used particular tipis.
What is a tipi?
A tipi—also commonly spelled “teepee”—is a portable dwelling built around a conical pole frame and covered with a fitted material. It is especially associated with some Plains Indigenous communities, but Indigenous peoples across North America have distinct histories, homes, and building traditions. Tipis were not the traditional dwelling of every Indigenous nation.
Materials and dimensions have varied. The National Park Service’s educational overview describes Plains examples made with buffalo-hide covers sewn from multiple hides, supported by a pole frame that begins with three or four poles and commonly uses more. It identifies lodgepole pine as a preferred pole material in that account, while emphasizing that tribes used different materials, patterns, and sizes. Those details are a general teaching overview, not a blueprint for every nation or historical period. National Park Service: Create Your Own Tipi
Canvas became an alternative cover after the 1880s as traditional bison hide became less available, according to the Plains Indian Museum. Canvas is now familiar in many contemporary tipi settings, including gatherings, ceremonies, powwows, and events such as Crow Fair. Plains Indian Museum FAQ

How is a tipi designed to work?
Pole frame and cover
The poles create a stable, open framework around which the cover is raised, drawn taut, and secured. In the Plains Indian Museum’s description, a lifting pole is used to raise the cover; the cover is then pulled tight and staked. The specific construction and setup differ across traditions, so this sequence should not be treated as a universal set of historical instructions. Plains Indian Museum FAQ
Opening and smoke flaps
The opening and smoke flaps are part of the shelter’s design, not decorative extras. In the museum’s account, two outside poles control the smoke flaps. Their position helps manage the opening at the top of the structure, while the entrance and other features contribute to how the interior is used.

Liner and interior
The Plains Indian Museum describes liners and floor coverings as parts of the seasonal interior in its example. A liner creates an inner layer; in a modern tipi, the space between liner and cover also affects airflow. Nomadics Tipi Makers says airflow in its own models depends on that space and on handling the smoke flaps. Follow the instructions for the specific tipi rather than assuming all models ventilate in the same way. Nomadics Tipi Makers FAQ
What can tipi decoration mean?
Decoration and meaning are specific to the community, object, and owner. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s record for a Blackfoot model tipi dated late 1860s–76 notes that construction features were distinctive among groups. It also describes images that could represent deeds, animals, landscape and weather, or personal visions, and notes that certain painted tipis had ritual significance. These observations belong to that collection entry; they should not be generalized to every tipi or treated as a universal symbolic vocabulary. The Met: Model Tipi – Blackfoot

Avoid describing designs as generic “Native patterns.” Such wording erases the distinct histories and meanings attached to particular designs. A separate Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian record, for example, documents tipi poles associated with an Assiniboine (Stoney) owner, Elizah Hunter, and lists cotton canvas and wood among the materials in the associated object group. That is a specific collection history, not a universal account of tipi materials. Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian: Tipi poles
Is a tipi the same as a teepee—and what about a Nordic tipi?
“Tipi” and “teepee” are two spellings commonly used for the North American dwelling; neither spelling makes the structure representative of all Indigenous housing. The word “tipi” is also used commercially for some cone-shaped shelters with a different history. Tentipi calls its products “Nordic tipis” and describes them as drawing on Sámi kåta traditions. Its heritage page distinguishes their loose vent cap, designed to regulate the opening in different wind directions, from North American tipi designs. Sámi kåta traditions and Plains tipi histories should not be merged just because a commercial product uses the same word. Tentipi: With roots in Swedish Lapland

How do you set up a modern canvas tipi?
Setup is model-specific: pole lengths, fittings, cover attachment, and accessories may differ. Nomadics Tipi Makers provides a setup booklet and demonstrations that cover site selection, pole preparation, raising a tripod, adding poles, fitting the cover, arranging smoke flaps, and installing the liner and accessories. Its setup page warns that measurements in older videos may differ; use the current manual’s measurements for that maker’s product. Nomadics Tipi Makers: Setup
- Choose and prepare the site. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for placement and clearances, and account for local ground, wind, and weather conditions.
- Prepare the poles and raise the frame. Use the pole arrangement and sequence specified in the current instructions for the model.
- Fit and secure the cover. Raise it using the specified method, then tension and stake it as directed.
- Arrange smoke flaps, liner, and accessories. Use the maker’s setup guidance for ventilation features and any included or optional parts.
Do not use a traditional structural description as fire-safety guidance. A fire inside a tipi depends on the specific model, its ventilation, site conditions, local fire rules, and the manufacturer’s directions. The available maker guidance on airflow describes its own model; it does not establish that a fire is safe in every tipi or location.

How do you keep rain out and care for canvas?
Keeping a canvas tipi serviceable starts with correct setup and following instructions for that particular cover. Moisture exposure, sunlight, ventilation, and storage all matter. Nomadics Tipi Makers advises sanding poles and applying wood preservative before setup, and discusses mildew and ultraviolet exposure in its care information. Those are manufacturer recommendations, not an independently verified lifespan guarantee. Nomadics Tipi Makers: Set Up and Care
For its own treatment guidance, Nomadics’ 2022 manual gives the following canvas-area examples. These are maker-provided figures, not universal specifications for other brands or fabrics:
| Tipi size in the 2022 manual | Example canvas area to treat |
|---|---|
| 12 ft | 225 sq ft |
| 14 ft | 310 sq ft |
| 16 ft | 400 sq ft |
| 18 ft | 510 sq ft |
| 20 ft | 630 sq ft |
| 22 ft | 760 sq ft |
| 24 ft | 900 sq ft |
| 26 ft | 1,060 sq ft |
The same 2022 manual recommends allowing 4–12 hours of drying without rain for the treatments it discusses. Product compatibility, application, and drying conditions depend on the treatment and canvas, so check the exact manual and product label before applying anything. What should you look for in a tipi tent?
For recreational or event use, compare products on practical requirements rather than assuming every tipi-shaped shelter is interchangeable:
- Intended use: camping, a seasonal setup, an event, or guest accommodation can call for different size, features, and setup support.
- Diameter and occupancy: check usable interior space against the number of people and the gear or furnishings you plan to bring.
- Fabric: confirm the canvas composition and the maker’s care, weather, and storage guidance.
- Frame and setup: establish whether poles are included, how they should be prepared, and whether current instructions or demonstrations are available.
- Liner and weather accessories: check what is included and whether compatible rain accessories or other parts are available.
- Repairs and local exposure: consider replacement or repair support, as well as local moisture, sunlight, and wind conditions.
Nomadics lists models from 12-foot travel lodges to 26-foot ceremonial tipis on its current product page; that is one manufacturer’s range, not a market-wide size standard or a ranking of products.
