A California house cat named Rayne Beau went missing during a June 2024 trip to Yellowstone National Park and was found about two months later near Roseville, California, roughly 800 to 900 miles from where he disappeared depending on the route measured. The reunion made headlines because the story had everything people respond to: a family pet, a national park, a long mystery, a microchip scan, and an ending most owners hope for.
For homeowners, the practical lesson is not that every lost cat can find its way back. The better lesson is that pet safety starts long before an animal gets loose. Microchips, collars, GPS tags, and current contact information are recovery tools. Doors, windows, screens, garages, fences, mudrooms, patios, and outdoor enclosures are prevention tools.
On our job sites, pet-related design comes up more often than it did 10 years ago. That tracks with the broader market. Pet ownership is a mainstream remodeling driver, with APPA reporting 95 million U.S. households owning a pet in its 2026 industry context. HumanePro’s comparison of 2025 APPA and AVMA data lists 49 million cat-owning households by APPA and 43.1 million by AVMA. That is not a niche design concern. It affects how families use entries, porches, flooring, built-ins, decks, and outdoor rooms every day.
This guide uses the Yellowstone cat story as a starting point for a practical question: how should a homeowner remodel so a pet has more freedom, less escape risk, and a house that still performs like a house?

Start With the Real Risk: Most Escapes Happen at Ordinary Transitions
Pet escapes rarely start with a dramatic failure. They usually happen at the places a family uses dozens of times a week: the front door, garage-to-house door, sliding patio door, screen porch, open window, deck gate, or a temporary opening during a remodel.
For cats, the highest-risk moments are fast and small. A guest holds the door open for 12 seconds. A delivery arrives. A child runs outside. A screen is loose at one corner. A garage door lifts before the interior door is closed. A contractor props open a side entry while carrying material. One small gap is enough.
That is why we design in layers. A good pet-safe home does not rely on one perfect product. It combines identification, entry control, screen strength, outdoor containment, and durable interior finishes.
A practical layered plan looks like this:
- Identification: microchip, collar tag, current phone number, and optional GPS or Bluetooth tracker.
- Entry sequence: storm door, mudroom gate, vestibule, pocket gate, or self-closing hardware at high-risk doors.
- Window and screen control: reinforced screen material, secure spline, locks, stops, and regular inspection.
- Outdoor access: catio, screened porch, fenced pet area, or supervised leash zone.
- Interior planning: vertical cat space, washable finishes, storage for leashes and carriers, and safe travel staging areas.
The goal is not to turn the house into a cage. The goal is to make normal daily use more forgiving.

Most homeowners think about pet access as a product decision: small flap, large flap, electronic door, wall tunnel, or sliding-glass insert. A builder looks at it differently. We start with the entry assembly and the wall or door being modified.
A pet door through an exterior door is one level of complexity. A pet door through an exterior wall is another. Once you cut through siding, sheathing, housewrap, insulation, interior drywall, and trim, you have changed the water-management layer and the air barrier. That opening needs a weatherproofing detail, not just a plastic frame screwed into a hole.
For 2026 budgeting, a basic pet door installation commonly falls in the low hundreds. Thumbtack lists a typical national pet or dog door installation range of about $115 to $364. Costs rise when the work involves insulated exterior doors, glass, masonry, thick walls, smart locking units, or a custom tunnel. Homewyse’s 2026 pet door cost guidance also shows why site conditions matter: labor, opening type, finish repair, and disposal can move the number quickly.
What We Want to See in a Pet Door Detail
Before approving a pet door through an exterior wall, ask for a simple detail showing five things: flashing, drainage, insulation, trim, and pest control. That may sound excessive for a small opening, but water does not care that the opening is only 8 by 12 inches.
A better wall-mounted pet door detail includes sloped sill treatment, compatible flashing tape or metal flashing, sealed side jambs, insulated tunnel material, exterior trim that sheds water, interior trim that can be removed for service, and a pest-resistant closure. In cold climates, the unit should also limit drafts. In hot climates, it should not become an air leak that works against the HVAC system all summer.
Security matters too. For dogs, electronic locking doors can help control access. For cats, we are cautious about relying on electronics as the only barrier. Batteries fail, collars come off, and determined animals learn routines. If the door opens into a fully enclosed catio, the risk is lower. If it opens directly outdoors, the pet door becomes both an escape point and a weather/security weak spot.
Use a Vestibule Concept at High-Risk Doors
A vestibule is just a two-stage entry. It can be as formal as a mudroom with two doors or as simple as a storm door paired with the main door. For pets, the value is obvious: one barrier can be closed before the next one opens.
Exterior door replacement is a common time to add this layer. In 2026, Angi lists average exterior door installation around $1,456, with common ranges from roughly $546 for a basic screen door to $2,374 or more for larger or premium systems. Home Depot lists basic exterior door installation around $398 to $998 before higher-end door materials and complex framing. A storm or security door commonly runs about $350 to $950 installed, with premium security models reaching about $1,800.

If the current entry is drafty, swollen, out of square, or poorly flashed, a replacement can be more valuable than adding gadgets to a failing door.
Hardware Details That Matter
On job sites where pets are part of the design brief, we look closely at hardware. Self-closing hinges or closers can help, but they must be adjusted so the door actually latches. A door that swings shut and bounces back open is worse than no closer because the homeowner thinks it closed.
Lever handles are convenient for people but can be easier for some pets to manipulate. Round knobs, keyed deadbolts, or higher-mounted secondary latches may be appropriate in specific cases. For sliding doors, use a proper lock plus a track bar or pin lock. For gates, specify self-closing hinges and latches that are not reachable from a pet’s normal climbing path.
Interior pet gates are also useful, especially in mudrooms and laundry rooms. A built-in pocket gate or half-height swinging gate looks cleaner than a temporary pressure gate and is less likely to be removed when guests come over. If you are already renovating a mudroom, plan the gate, leash hooks, carrier storage, shoe storage, and washable floor as one system.

Windows and Screens Need More Than Bug Protection
Ordinary insect screen is designed to keep insects out. It is not designed to hold back a cat pushing on it, climbing it, or clawing at a loose corner. If a window is part of your pet’s daily routine, the screen has to be treated as a safety component.
Pet screen is heavier than standard fiberglass insect screen and resists claw damage better. It is a good upgrade for many windows, screen doors, and porch panels. Where there is predator pressure, a high drop, or a determined escape artist, welded wire or hardware cloth may be the better choice. The right material depends on the opening, the animal, the neighborhood, and the visual expectations for the house.
Screen strength is only one part of the assembly. The spline must fit the frame properly. The frame must be square. The screen cannot be loose at the corners. Window stops should prevent a sash from opening wider than intended. Locks should work. If a second-floor window is used for ventilation, treat it with extra caution. A torn or loose screen can turn a normal open-window day into an emergency.
Window replacement can also trigger code and permit considerations. Energy standards vary by climate zone, and many jurisdictions care about U-factor, solar heat gain coefficient, safety glazing, egress dimensions, and historic-district appearance. Some cities allow certain like-for-like window replacements with limited review, while others require permits or documentation. Check the local building department before ordering, especially if you are changing size, type, structure, or exterior appearance.

Catios Give Cats Outdoor Stimulation Without Open-Range Risk
A catio is one of the strongest design answers to the Yellowstone story because it gives a cat fresh air, sun, smells, and watching space without depending on recall or luck. It can be a window box enclosure, a small deck-mounted structure, a screened porch conversion, or a custom framed outdoor room connected by a tunnel.
The best catios are not always the biggest. Cats use vertical territory. A 6-by-8-foot enclosure with shelves, ramps, perches, shade, and sightlines may be more valuable than a larger flat pen with no elevation. We typically think in zones: entry point, low perch, high perch, shaded rest area, weather-protected corner, cleanable floor, and a route back inside.
For 2026 budgets, a basic prefab catio can cost a few hundred dollars. Reported custom catios often run around $4,000 for a 6-by-8 build and can exceed $15,000 when adding tunnels, attached structures, premium screening, roofing, foundations, electrical work, or complex access routes. The jump in price is usually not the mesh. It is structure, attachment, roofing, drainage, labor, and finish quality.
Materials We Prefer for Outdoor Cat Enclosures
For framing, pressure-treated lumber, cedar, aluminum, or powder-coated steel can all work if detailed correctly. For infill, pet screen is useful in protected areas, while welded wire or hardware cloth is better where forced escape or predator damage is a concern. For roofing, polycarbonate panels, standing-seam metal, asphalt shingles, or a framed porch roof can work depending on architecture and budget.
The enclosure should not trap water against siding. Avoid fastening a catio directly against the house without a drainage gap, flashing plan, and maintainable connection. Where a roof meets siding, the flashing must be handled like any other roof-to-wall condition. Where posts meet grade, plan for rot resistance and drainage. Where the enclosure meets a deck, confirm the deck framing can handle the added loads and connections.
Comfort matters. In hot regions, include shade and airflow. In snowy regions, design for snow load and drifting. In windy regions, consider uplift and lateral bracing. In areas with snakes, ticks, coyotes, or other wildlife, use tighter lower barriers and inspect gaps at grade. Pet-safe design is local design.
Cost Guide for Pet-Safe Remodeling in 2026
Costs vary by labor market, climate, access, finish level, and whether the work is a simple add-on or part of a larger remodel. The table below gives realistic planning ranges for common pet-safe home upgrades in the United States in 2026.
| Upgrade | Typical 2026 Planning Range | Best Use | Cost Drivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic pet door installation | $115-$364 for many simple installs | Controlled access to yard, garage, or catio | Door material, wall thickness, glass, masonry, smart lock, trim repair |
| Exterior door replacement | About $398-$998 for basic installation; average installed projects around $1,456 | Improving latch, weather seal, curb appeal, and entry control | Door type, framing repair, sidelites, hardware, paint, code upgrades |
| Storm or security door | $350-$950 installed; premium security models up to about $1,800 | Creating a two-stage entry barrier | Door quality, closer, lockset, frame condition, custom sizing |
| Prefab catio | A few hundred dollars and up | Budget outdoor cat access | Size, material quality, anchoring, weather exposure |
| Custom 6-by-8 catio | Often around $4,000 | Durable, attached enclosure with shelves and weather protection | Framing, roof, flashing, screening, access tunnel, finish carpentry |
| Premium custom catio | $15,000+ | Integrated outdoor room or complex enclosure | Foundation, roofing, electrical, tunnels, deck work, high-end materials |
| Residential fence installation | Commonly $1,800-$6,500 or $10-$60 per linear foot | Dog containment and yard definition | Material, height, gates, terrain, demolition, property lines |
| Cat-specific fence planning | About $2,500-$6,000+ for 100 linear feet; $5,000-$12,000+ for 200 linear feet | Reducing climbing escape routes | Overhangs, rollers, mesh, posts, corners, gates |
| Invisible or electronic dog fence | Underground systems around $800-$2,800; GPS systems around $450-$1,300; wireless DIY around $100-$325 | Dog boundary training where appropriate | Linear footage, collar count, training, terrain, signal reliability |
For cats, we generally favor physical containment over boundary-training systems. A catio, secured porch, or properly detailed enclosure is more predictable than a collar-based boundary. For dogs, electronic systems can be part of a broader plan, but they do not stop other animals or people from entering the yard and they require training.
Permits, Codes, and HOA Rules: Where Pet Projects Get Complicated
A small pet project can trigger bigger rules when it changes the exterior, structure, energy performance, safety glazing, egress, drainage, or property line conditions. That does not mean the project is a problem. It means it should be planned correctly.
We advise homeowners to check their city or county permit office and HOA before exterior pet doors, catios, porch screening, decks, fences, or major window and door replacements. Rules vary sharply. A visible catio may be treated like an accessory structure in one area and like a porch modification in another. A fence may need height approval, setback confirmation, or HOA design review. A historic district may care about window profiles, exterior screens, and porch changes.
| Project Type | Common Permit or Review Trigger | What to Confirm Before Work Starts |
|---|---|---|
| Pet door through exterior wall | Exterior envelope penetration | Flashing, insulation, air sealing, siding repair, pest control |
| Pet door through exterior door | Door modification or replacement | Door warranty, fire rating if applicable, security, weather seal |
| Window replacement | Energy code, safety glazing, egress, exterior change | U-factor, SHGC, tempered glass locations, bedroom egress dimensions |
| Screened porch or catio | Attached structure, roof, deck load, exterior appearance | Footings, flashing, drainage, structural attachment, HOA visibility rules |
| Fence or pet containment | Height, location, easement, corner visibility | Survey, property lines, gate swing, pool barrier conflicts |
| Deck-mounted enclosure | Added load or guardrail change | Deck condition, post connections, guard height, stair access, lateral bracing |
Do not block a required egress door, bedroom egress window, stair landing, guardrail, or emergency access path while adding pet containment. We have seen well-meaning projects create code problems by placing a fixed enclosure in front of an emergency exit or reducing a landing below required dimensions.

Escape prevention is the urgent part of the story, but day-to-day pet design also affects how well the home ages. If the finishes cannot handle claws, moisture, odor, and cleaning, the owner eventually pays for repairs.

For flooring, we look for scratch resistance, cleanability, and moisture tolerance. Luxury vinyl plank, tile, sealed concrete, and some high-quality laminates can perform well in pet-heavy zones. Hardwood can work, but species, finish, color, and expectations matter. A dark glossy floor will show scratches faster than a lighter matte finish. Carpet is comfortable but can be a poor choice near litter boxes, pet doors, and mudroom entries.

For walls, washable paint in an eggshell, satin, or scrubbable matte finish is usually more practical than flat paint in pet traffic areas. For trim, avoid delicate profiles at scratching height if the animal is known to claw. In mudrooms and laundry rooms, consider moisture-resistant baseboards, tile wainscot, or durable paneling where splashes and repeated cleaning are likely.
Built-ins can solve daily friction. A litter-box cabinet with ventilation, a feeding station with wipeable surfaces, a storage bench for carriers, and a hose-accessible wash area can make the house easier to maintain. The key is ventilation and clean access. A hidden litter area that is hard to clean will not stay hidden for long.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
Some pet-safe upgrades are appropriate for a careful homeowner. Others should be handled by a qualified contractor because they affect water management, structure, electrical work, or code compliance.

Good DIY Candidates
Many homeowners can handle collar tags, microchip registration updates, GPS tracker setup, freestanding cat furniture, interior pressure gates, basic shelf perches into proper blocking, and replacing screen mesh in a simple removable frame. A small prefab catio may also be reasonable if it is freestanding, securely anchored, and not attached to the house in a way that traps water or changes structure.
DIY work still needs discipline. Measure twice, use corrosion-resistant fasteners outdoors, avoid blocking vents or drainage paths, and test every latch. If a cat can push a corner open with 10 pounds of pressure, the assembly is not secure.
Hire a Pro For These Projects
Bring in a contractor for exterior wall penetrations, door replacements that require framing repair, glass pet door inserts, masonry openings, attached catios, deck-mounted enclosures, roofed structures, electrical outlets in outdoor enclosures, and projects that may trigger permits. Also hire a pro if the house has stucco, brick veneer, stone veneer, EIFS, historic siding, or known water-intrusion issues. Those assemblies are less forgiving.
A good contractor should be able to explain how the project handles water, air, structure, pests, and service access. If the answer is only “we caulk it,” keep asking questions. Caulk is maintenance, not a complete flashing strategy.
A Practical Escape-Resistant Home Checklist
If the Yellowstone cat story made you look at your own house differently, start with a walkthrough. You do not need to remodel everything at once. Walk the home the way a loose pet would use it.
- Check every exterior door for reliable latching, weatherstripping, and gaps.
- Add a two-stage barrier at the door most often used by guests, kids, and deliveries.
- Inspect window screens for loose spline, torn mesh, bent frames, and weak corners.
- Upgrade high-use screens to pet screen or welded wire where needed.
- Keep garage-to-house doors closed before opening the overhead garage door.
- Use self-closing hardware on gates and adjust it until the latch catches every time.
- Create one secure travel staging area for carriers, leashes, and loading pets into vehicles.
- Consider a catio or screened outdoor room instead of unsupervised outdoor access.
- Verify microchip registration and collar contact information twice a year.
- Check permits, HOA rules, and local fence or enclosure restrictions before exterior work.
The best time to add these details is during normal remodel work. If you are replacing a door, plan the vestibule or pet access at the same time. If you are renovating a mudroom, add the gate, storage, washable surfaces, and pet wash now. If you are building a deck or screened porch, decide whether it should also function as a safe outdoor pet zone before framing starts.
The Builder’s Takeaway
Rayne Beau’s return was remarkable, but no homeowner should design around the hope that a lost pet can cross hundreds of miles and come home. Design around prevention first.
A pet-safe home is not defined by one product. It is a set of small, specific choices: doors that latch, screens that hold, outdoor spaces that are enclosed, wall penetrations that are flashed, finishes that can be cleaned, and travel routines that reduce panic at the threshold. Done well, these upgrades make the home safer for pets and more comfortable for people without hurting curb appeal, energy performance, or resale value.

That is the standard we aim for on a remodel: the house should work better on an ordinary Tuesday, not just in an emergency.
Frequently Asked Questions
How did the cat missing in Yellowstone make it back toward California?
Rayne Beau disappeared during a June 2024 trip to Yellowstone and was found about two months later near Roseville, California. A microchip helped identify him and reconnect him with his owners. The exact route is unknown, which is why homeowners should treat the story as a reminder to prevent escapes rather than rely on recovery.
How much does it cost to build a catio in 2026?
A basic prefab catio can cost a few hundred dollars. A custom 6-by-8-foot catio often runs around $4,000, while larger attached enclosures with tunnels, roofing, foundations, electrical work, or premium screening can exceed $15,000.
Do I need a permit to install a pet door or catio?
It depends on the location and scope. A pet door through an exterior wall, attached catio, porch conversion, deck-mounted enclosure, fence, or window and door replacement may trigger permit, HOA, zoning, energy-code, or historic-district review. Check with the local building department before work starts.

What is the best way to make doors and windows escape-proof for cats?
Use layered prevention: reliable latches, self-closing hardware, a storm door or mudroom gate at high-risk entries, reinforced screens, secure window stops, and a contained outdoor area such as a catio. Standard insect screen is not enough for many cats.
Are pet doors bad for energy efficiency or home security?
They can be if poorly selected or installed. A pet door should be sized correctly, weather-sealed, insulated where appropriate, and installed with proper flashing if it penetrates an exterior wall. Smart or locking models can help, but they should not replace good entry design.
Is a screened porch enough, or should I build a dedicated catio?
A screened porch can work if the screen material, framing, door latch, and lower panels are strong enough for the pet and local wildlife risk. A dedicated catio is usually better when you need controlled access, climbing shelves, predator resistance, or a smaller enclosure connected directly to the house.
