Keep the plant away from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 10°C. Do not put it beside a radiator or in a steamy bathroom; snake plants prefer low humidity and do not need misting.
How to Water a Snake Plant
Water when the compost has dried. The timing varies with light, temperature, humidity, pot and plant size, compost, and drainage, so avoid a universal watering schedule.
- Check the compost with a finger; wait if it is still damp.
- When it has dried, water the compost thoroughly, rather than pouring water into the centre of the plant.
- Let excess water drain through the pot.
- Empty the saucer or outer pot after drainage, and wait for the compost to dry again before watering.
Reduce watering during winter or other periods of low growth and low light, when the plant uses less water. Err on the dry side, but do not leave it without water indefinitely.
Soil and Pot Choice Matter More Than Fertilizer
Use a free-draining cactus or succulent-style compost. Snake plants prefer a close fit in their pot; a much larger pot holds excess compost around the roots, which can stay damp longer and encourage root problems.
A pot with drainage holes is important because waterlogged compost raises the risk of root rot. A decorative outer pot can still be used if you can remove the growing pot and empty any collected water. Do not add gravel to the bottom of the pot as a drainage layer; it does not improve drainage and can leave water perched above it.

Choose a Snug Pot With Drainage
When repotting, choose a new pot only slightly larger than the current one. The goal is room for growth without leaving a large volume of wet compost around a relatively small root system. Check that the growing pot has drainage holes, and that water can be removed from any saucer or outer pot.
Where to Place a Snake Plant in the Home
The upright leaves can work well as a vertical design element in a room. Choose a position with suitable light and keep the plant clear of cold draughts and radiators.
Consider stability and access as well as appearance. A tall plant in a light container may tip over more easily, so choose a stable position and keep it out of busy walkways and door swings.

Protecting Floors, Millwork, and Finished Surfaces
A pot can leak or overflow onto a finished surface. Place a removable saucer or waterproof tray beneath a pot with drainage holes to catch runoff. Empty it after watering: standing water can move back into the pot and keep the roots too wet.
Check beneath the pot and saucer after watering, especially when the plant sits on flooring, shelving, or a painted surface. Raised pot feet may provide clearance beneath a container, but they do not replace drainage or the need to empty collected water.

Repotting a Snake Plant
Repot when the plant needs more room, using a pot with drainage holes and a free-draining mix. Keep the new pot fairly snug rather than moving it into a much larger container.
How to Repot
- Remove the plant from its pot and inspect the roots and compost.
- If roots are blackened and mushy or the compost is saturated, discard the wet old medium and use a clean pot with drainage and fresh, free-draining compost.
- Set the plant in the new pot without burying it excessively, then fill around it with compost.
- Correct the watering setup: let the compost dry between waterings and empty runoff from the saucer or outer pot.
Root rot can be difficult to recover from, so do not assume a badly affected plant will survive. Persistent wet compost, a plant that wobbles in its pot, or decline after frequent watering are reasons to inspect the roots rather than diagnose the problem from leaves alone.

Fertilizer is optional and does not compensate for poor light or excess water. If you feed the plant, use a liquid houseplant or cactus feed during its active-growth period, following the product directions.
Do not mist the leaves. Check the plant regularly, keep dead debris off the compost surface, and use clean or new potting mix when potting. These simple habits also make it easier to spot pests early.
Common Pests and What to Do
Snake plants can be affected by mealybugs, red spider mites, and vine weevils. Inspect leaf bases and undersides regularly. If you find insects, isolate the plant from other houseplants and identify the pest before choosing a treatment.

- For a small outbreak, remove pests by hand or rinse the foliage. An alcohol-dipped cotton swab can help reach pests in small, inaccessible areas.
- For a heavier infestation, an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil may be appropriate if its label allows use on the plant and pest. Follow the label directions, including coverage instructions.
- Keep checking the plant and avoid routine pesticide spraying when there is no pest problem.
Persistently wet compost and poor drainage can contribute to root rot and encourage fungus gnats and other pest issues. Correct those conditions as part of addressing a problem.
