Healthy soil starts with diagnosis, not a shopping cart. Test soil and identify problems such as compaction or poor drainage before adding amendments; then follow regional recommendations for the plants and site. Protecting soil, using mature compost prudently, and keeping roots or other cover in place can improve its function over time.
What Healthy Soil Does
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service describes soil health as the continuing capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem. For homeowners, that means water can enter, roots can grow, plants can access nutrients, soil is less prone to erosion, and a community of organisms can live in it.
Assess soil with more than one clue. Look at how water moves, how roots grow, whether the soil is compacted, and what a laboratory test reports. Earthworms, dark color, a single pH reading, or a good harvest alone do not prove that soil is healthy. Texture and a site’s drainage setting are not quickly changed, but structure, compaction, organic matter, nutrient balance, and management can improve over time.
A Test-First Checklist
- Divide the site into zones. Sample and assess areas with different uses or histories separately, such as an established lawn, vegetable bed, ornamental border, and newly graded yard.
- Observe water and grade. Note ponding, runoff, and where water flows after rain. Compost and fertilizer are not substitutes for fixing a grading or drainage problem.
- Check for compaction. Compaction reduces pore space, making it harder for roots, water, and air to move through soil. Avoid heavy traffic and soil work when the ground is wet.
- Use a laboratory soil test before amending. A lawn-and-garden test may report pH, estimated texture, organic matter, phosphorus, and potassium; optional tests may assess soluble salts or lead. A test is a diagnostic baseline, not a grade. Follow the laboratory’s sampling directions and recommendations.
- Match the plan to the plants. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, and the right adjustment depends on the test, soil, and plants. Do not apply lime, sulfur, fertilizer, or other amendments solely on the basis of a generic target or visual guess.
A home soil test kit may be convenient for screening or as a route to mail-in analysis. For detailed nutrient recommendations, pH-adjustment rates, soluble-salt information, or lead testing, use a local laboratory whose advice is calibrated to regional soils and plants. Follow that lab’s guidance on when to retest; University of Minnesota Extension, for example, advises testing every three to five years and when making a change such as converting lawn to garden.

Improve Soil Without Overdoing It
Finished, mature compost can add organic matter and improve soil structure, but it is not a universal repair. It will not fix a broken drain or change a site’s inherent texture. Compost also contains nutrients, and excessive applications can build phosphorus or contribute to nutrient losses. Use the soil test and, when available, a compost product analysis to choose a suitable material and rate.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes compost as a biologically stable soil amendment produced by aerobic decomposition. Ask suppliers about maturity, feedstocks, nutrient content, soluble salts, and available quality information. Avoid raw or immature material used as though it were finished compost.
Colorado State University Extension gives an example for low-salt, plant-derived compost: for one-time lawn preparation, 1–2 inches incorporated to 6 inches; for a new vegetable or flower garden, 3–4 inches incorporated to 8–12 inches. These are regional examples, not universal rates. Use local recommendations and test results for your soil, crop, and compost.
Where appropriate, compost can be incorporated during initial bed or lawn preparation or used at the surface. Organic mulch helps protect soil from erosion, reduce evaporation, moderate temperature swings, and suppress weeds; it contributes organic matter gradually as it breaks down. Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks.
Established Lawns
Before treating thin turf as a soil problem, consider other causes such as shade, traffic, drainage, disease, insects, unsuitable grass, irrigation, and fertility. Test before applying fertilizer or pH amendments.

For confirmed compaction in an established lawn, core aeration removes plugs of soil and creates larger pores; it is different from using a spike tool. Aerate when turf can recover and the soil is moist enough for the machine to pull plugs rather than tear turf. A light topdressing of quality compost afterward can improve infiltration and add organic matter. Address the cause of repeated compaction as well.
Aeration does not cure ponding caused by low spots, grading, or drainage design. Those may require drainage or grading work. For a new lawn, choose grass suited to the site’s light, water, and intended use, and follow local Extension guidance for preparation and timing.
Gardens and Edible Beds
Set permanent paths and keep feet, carts, and equipment off growing areas. Do not till or work soil when it is wet: wet-soil disturbance and heavy loads can damage structure and increase compaction. Avoid repeated mechanical tillage when it is not needed.

Cover crops depend on local growing seasons and crop rotation, so seek regional guidance on suitable species and timing. For food gardens, consider lead testing when site history or exposure routes raise concern, such as proximity to older structures or traffic deposits, or use of imported soil of uncertain origin. Plant appearance and soil color cannot diagnose lead.
Raised beds can be an option when native soil is unsuitable or contaminated, but the soil, compost, drainage, and fertility plan still matter. Source materials carefully and test when appropriate.

New Landscapes and Construction-Disturbed Soil
Construction can strip topsoil, mix it with subsoil, or compact the remaining soil with machinery. Assess grade and drainage, test the soil, and choose plants suited to the site’s actual light, water, and soil conditions. For a new lawn, select grass appropriate to the site and intended traffic.
Where tests show a need for organic matter, compaction relief, or nutrient or pH adjustment, prepare the rooting zone uniformly and follow local recommendations. Maryland Extension’s new-lawn guidance emphasizes thorough mixing and warns against tilling wet soil.

Protect established trees during landscape work. Do not casually add soil or regrade over tree roots; even small changes in soil depth can contribute to decline. Where exposed shallow roots make mowing difficult, mulch or alternative groundcover may be safer than adding soil.
Safety and When to Get Advice
- Base fertilizer and amendment applications on soil results and, when relevant, compost testing.
- Do not drive or park heavy equipment over beds and lawns, and avoid working wet soil.
- Seek local Extension or laboratory advice for interpretation, rates, plant choices, and seasonal timing.
- Get qualified help for persistent ponding, major grade changes, large-scale compaction, or lead concerns.
Local grading and stormwater requirements may apply when work changes slopes or drainage. Check local rules before changing the shape of a yard or redirecting stormwater. For significant construction or structural concerns, consult an appropriate professional; a routine lawn-and-garden soil test is not a geotechnical evaluation.

Can I tell whether soil is healthy just by looking at it?
No. Observations about water movement, roots, cover, and compaction are useful, but no single clue—including dark color or earthworms—proves soil health. Combine physical observations with laboratory results and local guidance.

Should I test soil before adding lime or fertilizer?
Yes. A laboratory lawn-and-garden test can guide whether an amendment is needed and at what rate. Follow the report and local recommendations; do not apply lime, sulfur, or fertilizer based only on a generic target.
Will compost fix compacted or poorly drained soil?
Compost can add organic matter and improve structure, but it is not a stand-alone fix for severe compaction, a broken drain, or a grading problem. Identify and address the limiting condition first, then use compost at a rate suited to the soil and product.
What is the difference between a home soil test kit and a laboratory test?
A home kit can be a convenient screening product or a mail-in route to lab analysis. Use a local laboratory when you need detailed nutrient recommendations, pH-adjustment rates, soluble-salt information, or lead testing and regionally calibrated advice.
When should I consider lead testing for a food garden?
Consider it when site history or exposure routes create concern, including proximity to older structures or traffic deposits, or uncertain imported soil. Plant appearance and soil color cannot establish whether soil contains lead.
