Vinegar Weed Killer: What It Can Do, Where to Use It, and Safer Alternatives

Vinegar damages only the foliage it touches and does not reliably kill weed roots. Learn why a homemade vinegar, salt, and soap recipe is not supported, how concentrated products can harm you, and which alternatives to consider near plants.

Vinegar can damage weed foliage it directly touches, but it is a non-selective contact treatment—not a reliable root killer. Household vinegar is not recommended for weed control in University of Nevada, Reno Extension guidance; stronger horticultural vinegar can harm people as well as plants, so use only a product labeled for the intended site and follow its directions.

Do not add salt, dish soap, or other ingredients to an herbicide unless its label expressly allows the combination. For weeds near lawns, garden plants, or future planting areas, hand removal and mulch are practical alternatives that avoid improvising a spray mixture.

What Vinegar Weed Killer Can and Cannot Do

Acetic acid damages the plant tissue it contacts. It does not move through the plant to kill roots, so established perennial weeds may regrow. Young annual weeds are a more appropriate target, provided a product is labeled for the intended use and nearby desirable plants can be protected from contact or drift.

Vinegar is non-selective: it can injure wanted foliage as readily as weeds. It is a poor fit for lawns, mixed planting beds, or any spot where spray could reach plants you want to keep.

Household Vinegar and Horticultural Vinegar

These products differ in concentration and hazard. The National Pesticide Information Center says household vinegar is generally 4–6% acetic acid, while horticultural vinegar typically contains 20% or more. University of Nevada, Reno Extension discusses 5% household vinegar and 20% horticultural vinegar, and says household vinegar at 5% is not recommended for weed control.

Option What the research says Key consideration
Household vinegar Typically 4–6% acetic acid, according to the National Pesticide Information Center; University of Nevada, Reno Extension says 5% household vinegar is not recommended for weed control. Do not assume a kitchen product is an effective or approved herbicide.
Horticultural vinegar Typically 20% or more acetic acid, according to the National Pesticide Information Center. Concentrated acid can cause serious skin and eye injury. Use only according to the product label.
Hand removal and mulch University of Nevada, Reno Extension and Oregon State University Extension list these as weed-control approaches. Useful alternatives when spray contact with nearby plants is a concern.

Concentration alone does not determine whether a product is appropriate for a particular weed or site. Check the label for the intended use, target, directions, and required protective equipment. The National Pesticide Information Center says registered acetic-acid herbicides typically contain 20% or more, carry a DANGER signal word, and have an EPA registration number; registration and directions are product- and use-specific.

Where Vinegar Treatment May Fit

A targeted contact treatment may be appropriate for young annual weeds where contact with desirable plants can be avoided and the product label permits that use. It is not a general-purpose yard treatment. Avoid spraying lawns, mixed beds, or areas where drift or runoff could expose plants or people to the product.

Do not treat a gravel drive, area near a well, or other location based on a homemade recipe or the assumption that vinegar is harmless. Check the product label for site restrictions and precautions, and consult local extension guidance if the intended location is unclear.

Why Not to Add Salt or Dish Soap

The research does not establish a safe, universal vinegar, salt, and dish-soap recipe or application dose. University of Maryland Extension advises against mixing an herbicide with salt or another product unless the herbicide label expressly allows it. Additives can change the risks without making vinegar a systemic root killer.

Do not present a homemade mixture as a registered herbicide or improvise an application rate. If a product label does not permit an added ingredient, do not add it.

Safety and Label Directions

“Natural” does not mean safe. The National Pesticide Information Center warns that concentrated acetic acid can cause serious eye and skin injury, and its vapors can irritate the respiratory tract. Follow the product label and use the protective equipment it requires; do not handle horticultural-strength acid like food vinegar.

The National Pesticide Information Center advises reading and following the label, wearing label-required protective equipment, and keeping people and pets away until the treated area is dry. Its general pesticide precautions include long sleeves, long pants, shoes, socks, and gloves; consider eye protection and chemical-resistant gloves when mixing or applying vinegar herbicide. The product label takes precedence for specific precautions.

Never rely on a homemade recipe for predictable coverage or compliance. Product labels specify allowed uses and directions. Requirements can vary by product and location.

Alternatives for Weeds Near Plants

For weeds in beds or mixed plantings, hand removal and mulch are better-supported options than an improvised vinegar mixture. Remove the weed and as much of its root as practical, taking care not to disturb desirable plants. A hori-hori knife is one hand tool named by University of Nevada, Reno Extension for weed removal.

Mulch can help suppress weeds, and cultivation is another option listed by Oregon State University Extension. Choose an approach that suits the weed and site, and avoid injuring the plants you want to keep.
